It's usually the smelly ones who don't notice it. It also appears that you don't notice sarcasm either. Poor little guy.
TLDR: When you're butthurt about people being butthurt about other people being butthurt, you're just an idiot.

Nov 6, 2015Joban8 posted a message on The Magic Street Journal: How to Handle "That Guy"Posted in: ArticlesQuote from Klamsmith »This isn't a platform for your victim complex. The article was fine until the phrase "The elephant in the room is women and minorities playing Magic in unwelcoming areas" where your article turns into the great plight facing women in gaming. Three of my good magic friends are homosexual we play magic at three different venues regularly. There are several female regulars we see and play with as well and if someone says something degrading to them they wouldn't hesitate to call them out on it, they don't expect a white knight to save them. The thing is "That Guy" is already reguarded as an a-hole wherever he is. Stereotypes exist thats the cold hard truth it's your job to change that perspective. This article shouldn't be about what I have to do as a player if I see BS I'm calling BS on someone acting like an a-hole. It shouldn't be about what a judge should do or what a store owner should do they already understand what needs to be done. It should be about helping women change that stigma of "just being there for their boyfriend" and "not understanding how to play". My wife plays magic with me as well the only time anyone said anything to her was two years ago when she boomerranged a guys first and second attempt at putting a land into play at fnm. Who just ended up rage quitting and leaving the store after she called him out. So yes magic has a number of "That Guys" who are the internet trolls of real life and the number one rule is don't feed the trolls.
Tldr: Defend yourself from the beta's at the magic shop.
Bravo, my friend. This starting off fairly interesting until it turned into a soap box for political correctness. "That" guy certainly exists, but it's not a given that all ********s are racist/sexist/transphobic/other labels that you're trying to push. Stereotypes exist and they're not going away. I'm a man who's dating a transgender woman, but I don't get butthurt when we play with our group of friends and they crack an off-color joke every now and then. It's called humor and it's a two-way street; she gets in on the banter and gives it right back. I completely understand that when you're playing at an FNM or casual event with new players, these kinds of comments and jokes are uncalled for and simply make you an ********. However, in the comfort of your own playgroup, with people you know, what's the problem? Because chances are that if a player can't take a mild joke then they're not somebody I'd want in my playgroup. Everybody has their own insecurities and joking about them with others is a great way to find acceptance. You want to write a piece about social problems affecting LGSs? Investigate the poor hygiene that's exhibited by, unfortunately, a large number of players; I find that to be a much more influential factor affecting the experiences of new players...unless of course it's rude to stereotype people who suffer from alblutophobia? - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
^This. I've been running Bogles for a little over a year now and recently started playing with Burn. IME, the outcome of the matchup heavily depends on the number of lifelink spells played by Bogles. A good number of Bogles decks run the standard playset of Daybreak Coronet in addition to at least x1 (but usually 2-3) Unflinching Courage and 1-3 copies of spirit link, which stacks on top of normal Lifelink effects. I noticed that few people in my meta ran Burn, so I cut out all lifelink/spirit link cards except Daybreak; it was a pretty solid decision until I started to run into more Burn players. An early Eidolon of the Great Revel + damage to the face and it was GG even if I started the game with Leyline of Sanctity, considering Eidolon hits on every single non-land card that I play. However, once I added the lifelink/spirit link cards back into the mix, my win % vs Burn significantly improved. Eidolon is still irritating, Deflecting Palm can win games on its own, and Atarka's Command + Destructive Revelry can cause many problems, but the matchup heavily favors Bogles so long as they're running the typical build w/ ~8 life-gain spells.
I've been playing around with Mardu Burn in a few play-tests; mostly b/c I really like Bump in the Night and I'm trying to find the best way to incorporate it into my deck. I totally agree with you on Self-Inflicted Wound and have found it to be relevant in multiple matchups. My build looks pretty similar to yours more or less, but with a full set of Kolaghan's Command. It's rarely ever a dead card, hates on artifacts, and can target either players/creatures for damage. I'm not partial to Naya Burn and only ran it in order to play Atarka and D Revelry. Currently, I'm working on finding a manabase for Mardu Burn with a green splash in order to run 2-3 copies of Atarka's Command. Have you tried playing around with Kolaghan's Command in your build? If so, thoughts?
I've never heard of Goblin Grenade before now; I could definitely see myself caught off-guard playing against your build. If you're committed to playing it, maybe it would be beneficial to drop the goblins (aside from the Guides) and run something like Hordeling Outburst? Essentially, you're still paying 1 R per goblin, but it would allow you to thin out the deck while still playing 16 goblins (assuming you run a play set). GGrenade seems like a blast to play with and I'm going to try this out myself!
Jesus-Tap-Dancing-Christ, that sounds like a nightmare! I despise playing against Twin and it's the main reason for running suppression field and ghostly prison in my main deck. But wow, five in a row is just disgusting and cruel.
Not at all. Obelisk of Urd was a ton of fun to play in my standard b/w warriors deck; I've been trying to work it into my modern builds and b/w tokens has shown the best results. It's possible to cast it on turn 3 and it can be a finisher in the late game.
^ It's officially pronounced 'B-oh-gle', but I still prefer to incorrectly pronounce it as 'B-ah-gle'. Just personal preference.
With access to red & black mana, you can't go wrong with Kolaghan's Command
This is very true.
This is what I ran to tie for 2nd:
4 Windswept Heath
1 Misty Rainforest
4 Horizon Canopy
4 Razorverge Thicket
4 Temple Garden
2 Plains
4 Slippery Bogle
4 Gladecover Scout
3 Kor Spiritdancer
4 Hyena Umbra
4 Spider Umbra
4 Daybreak Coronet
2 Spirit Mantle
1 Unflinching Courage
1 Angelic Gift
4 Path to Exile
1 Suppression Field
1 Ghostly Prison
3 Leyline of Sanctity
2 Suppression Field
2 Seal of Primordium
2 Rest in Peace
2 Gaddock Teeg
2 Stony Silence
1 Spellskite
1 Dromoka's Command
Round 1: vs Tokens?
He scooped twice to a loaded bogle, so I'm not quite sure what he was playing. However, he was able to play a Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and Honor the Pure so I'm guessing it was Tokens.
Result: 2-0 good guys
Round 2: vs Affinity
His deck played very fast and his Inkmoths hit me for 6 poison counters by turn 4. After I was able to play both Ghostly Prison and Suppression field, he knew it was over. The next few turns were me swinging with a loaded bogle/ w/spirit mantle and daybreak and him blocking with an activated Etched Champion, so he scooped. The next game was quick; my opening hand had Stony Silence and Suppression Field and he couldn't do anything.
Result: 2-0 good guys
Round 3: vs Grishoalbrand
He mulligan'd down to 4 the first game and scooped before he could play anything more than 2 lands. I went into the second game blind and he was able to cheat out Griselbrand to tie it up. The last game came down to the wire; he hit the majority of his sideboard cards and killed two of my bogles early with pyroclasm. Luckily, I drew another hexproof creature and landed Ethereal Armor on it before my opponent played Spellskite. I was only able to play Daybreak Coronet due to his Spellskite, but it was enough to take out his chump blockers and hit him for lethal before he could draw his combo.
Result: 2-1 good guys
Round 4: vs Infect
Long story short is that he annihilated me in two games. Both games I went to Path his infect creature and he played kicked Vines of Vastwoods to hit me with lethal infect damage.
Result: 0-2 bad guys
Round 5: vs Hive Mind
I thought I was going to win game one as I had him down to 2 life after turn 5. He hit me with the Hive Mind/Pact of Negation and I was done. I sided in both copies of Seal of Primordium and Gaddock Teeg for the next two games and won pretty handily.
Result: 2-1 good guys
Between work and masters school, I don't get to play much, so I was very happy with a 4-1 record. My lack of knowledge regarding other modern decks almost lost me a few games, so I have some research to do before next time. Suppression Field and Ghostly Prison were my two all-stars; nobody could respond and definitely weren't expecting to see them played. I may add another copy of Ghostly Prison to my sideboard b/c it gave me some great results and I just plainly think it's a terrific card. I think that I got lucky with a majority of favorable matchups, but it also helped that I'm the only player who runs Bogles and I seldom get to play, so nobody was expecting to see it. My Fridays will be open in January so I'm looking forward to more chances to play. However, this is my only modern deck at the moment and I'm sure I'll start to see some specific sideboard cards; what are some common sideboard options that are effective against bogles?
At BFZ prerelease, I pulled a gideon, ally of zendikar & vampiric rites and instantly thought about how fun they'd be to play in B/W tokens. However, from a competitive standpoint, is vampiric rites a viable card in this deck? I figure that it complements bitterblossom well when they're both in play; it (somewhat) negates the life drain and offers valuable card draw options. Anyway, thanks in advance for the information; I'm lookin forward to getting acquainted with and piloting the deck soon.
