Nov 2, 2015Has anybody gotten to do any play-testing with Angelic Gift? I've really been digging on it lately as it's essentially a cantripping Spirit Mantle. So far I've been running a single copy in the place of a Mantle, but I'm going to try a 2:2 ratio of both cards and track the results. More often than not, I find Kor Spiritdancer to be a clunky draw, but it's pretty clutch when you're able to draw two off of the Spiritdancer/Gift combo.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
Nov 1, 2015A return to a fan-favorite plane that will probably sell exceptionally well based on nostalgia alone? I can't possibly imagine how this could fail; there's no way they would make a half-assed set devoid of needed reprints and expect it to sell itself....Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Nov 1, 2015I don't get much time to play between work and school and I wanted to post my FNM results.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
This is what I ran to tie for 2nd:
Round 1: vs Tokens?
He scooped twice to a loaded bogle, so I'm not quite sure what he was playing. However, he was able to play a Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and Honor the Pure so I'm guessing it was Tokens.
Result: 2-0 good guys
Round 2: vs Affinity
His deck played very fast and his Inkmoths hit me for 6 poison counters by turn 4. After I was able to play both Ghostly Prison and Suppression field, he knew it was over. The next few turns were me swinging with a loaded bogle/ w/spirit mantle and daybreak and him blocking with an activated Etched Champion, so he scooped. The next game was quick; my opening hand had Stony Silence and Suppression Field and he couldn't do anything.
Result: 2-0 good guys
Round 3: vs Grishoalbrand
He mulligan'd down to 4 the first game and scooped before he could play anything more than 2 lands. I went into the second game blind and he was able to cheat out Griselbrand to tie it up. The last game came down to the wire; he hit the majority of his sideboard cards and killed two of my bogles early with pyroclasm. Luckily, I drew another hexproof creature and landed Ethereal Armor on it before my opponent played Spellskite. I was only able to play Daybreak Coronet due to his Spellskite, but it was enough to take out his chump blockers and hit him for lethal before he could draw his combo.
Result: 2-1 good guys
Round 4: vs Infect
Long story short is that he annihilated me in two games. Both games I went to Path his infect creature and he played kicked Vines of Vastwoods to hit me with lethal infect damage.
Result: 0-2 bad guys
Round 5: vs Hive Mind
I thought I was going to win game one as I had him down to 2 life after turn 5. He hit me with the Hive Mind/Pact of Negation and I was done. I sided in both copies of Seal of Primordium and Gaddock Teeg for the next two games and won pretty handily.
Result: 2-1 good guys
Between work and masters school, I don't get to play much, so I was very happy with a 4-1 record. My lack of knowledge regarding other modern decks almost lost me a few games, so I have some research to do before next time. Suppression Field and Ghostly Prison were my two all-stars; nobody could respond and definitely weren't expecting to see them played. I may add another copy of Ghostly Prison to my sideboard b/c it gave me some great results and I just plainly think it's a terrific card. I think that I got lucky with a majority of favorable matchups, but it also helped that I'm the only player who runs Bogles and I seldom get to play, so nobody was expecting to see it. My Fridays will be open in January so I'm looking forward to more chances to play. However, this is my only modern deck at the moment and I'm sure I'll start to see some specific sideboard cards; what are some common sideboard options that are effective against bogles?
Oct 29, 2015Before I acquired my canopy playset, I was ran x2 Wooded Bastion and x2 Sunpetal Grove. Obviously, you won't be happy to see Grove in your opening hand, but after that it's all gravy once you're able to play/fetch a basic/shock. Horizon Canopy isn't essential, but it's great to have late game when you're top-decking crap and looking for one more aura to finish off your opponent.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
Oct 26, 2015Hey folks, I've been putting together a B/W tokens deck and I'm curious to hear if anybody has had success running Vampiric Rites? I did a search and saw some posts mentioning the card when it was spoiled, but I haven't heard anything since. I'm a returning player and currently playing modern Bogles, but I'm looking for another fun modern deck to play. My first MTG purchase since Mirrodin was the Modern Event Deck and I'm just now finding the time to build around it. Aside from adding some commonly played cards like Liliana of the veil, thoughtseize, bitterblossom, etc, I've also been looking to toy around with some lesser-played cards such as blackmail and vampiric rites.Posted in: Modern Archives - Deck Creation
At BFZ prerelease, I pulled a gideon, ally of zendikar & vampiric rites and instantly thought about how fun they'd be to play in B/W tokens. However, from a competitive standpoint, is vampiric rites a viable card in this deck? I figure that it complements bitterblossom well when they're both in play; it (somewhat) negates the life drain and offers valuable card draw options. Anyway, thanks in advance for the information; I'm lookin forward to getting acquainted with and piloting the deck soon.
Oct 15, 2015Between studying for the PCAT and 40-hour work weeks, I don't get to play as much as I'd like, but I try to play about two FNMs a month. My deck choice is pretty consistent as I've been playing with Bogles the last few months.Posted in: Modern
Oct 11, 2015I too am finding Dromoka's Command to be very useful, especially against burn; how many are you running?Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
In regards to Suppression Field, I'm curious as to where you're running into problems with the card? lately, I've been playing with 2 in my main board and 2 in the side (as opposed to 4 in the side) and it's been working wonders for me. I started running them in the main due to a heavy twin presence in my meta, but it's been even more useful in shutting down Spellskite and slowing down cascade spells when playing Living End. Speaking of Living End, I've made a note to try out your strategy. Personally, it's my most frustrating matchup as it puts me away fairly quick; my only answer is to stall with Suppression Field and hope that I draw a Rest In Peace.
Sep 18, 2015Aside from the obvious reason of moving product, the expedition lands will be a cash grab and ultimately end up in the hands of collectors/investors. Believing this to be true, I don't understand why WoTC couldn't make these "true" full-art lands and omit the text box. It seems like they're catering to new players rather than the seasoned players and collectors, especially considering that there won't even be that many printed. Hell, I remember thinking fetches were worthless when I first started playing around Onslaught (albeit I was about 10 year old). I don't plan on buying singles of the expedition lands nor do I plan to take Hasbro's bait and start cracking packs like a fiend, so I'm not trying to be pissy and nit pick. Rather, I've really liked the new expedition art that's trickled down the last few days and it just seems like covering half of the "full" art image with text -that 75% of your fanbase is already familiar with- is redundant.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
With that being said, I plan on picking up a fat pack or two and I'll surely scream like a little schoolgirl if I pull that beautiful Polluted Delta.
Sep 12, 2015Holy smokes, I don't want that on my permanent record. What's the typical punishment for playing proxies? I had no clue that the LGS could also get into trouble; yikes, double trouble. Have there been a lot of sting operations going on? I think I actually might've spotted an undercover DCI agent last Friday. The DCI's 'War on Proxies' must be getting pretty serious with all the trouble they're handing out. It's sad to think about all the children who will have to grow up fatherless, because dad caught a non-violent proxy charge and was sentenced to a life of trouble.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Sep 8, 2015With the exception of Leyline, there's nothing in my main deck or sideboard that costs more than 3 mana. There have been plenty of games where I'm top-decking garbage with 5+ lands in play; even if I draw an aura that I'm looking for, it'll still likely cost only 1 or 2 to play. I don't care if it etb so long as I hit my first two land drops. It would be a nice option to have.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
Sep 8, 2015I'm a proponent of proxies for personal use, especially within one's own playgroup. Honestly, I've been playing a deck with 4 proxies of Horizon Canopyat FNM for the past 3 months. I have a career that allows me to buy most cards that I want, but I'm also not a fan of flushing money down the toilet. For 1/3 the cost of a single Canopy, I received a proxied playset along with 20 other cards from an overseas vendor; the only difference between the proxy and the real deal is the fact that I saved $220. However, I would never consider selling them or passing them along to another player as though they were the real deal. On one hand, I find the quality of certain proxies to be scary-accurate and that's disturbing to hear if you're a collector; at what point do proxies stop being proxies b/c they're indistinguishable from legitimate copies? I may proxy, but I still have a collection that's quite valuable and I would hate to see that value diminish should an influx of knock-offs flood the market. On the other hand, I have a family and career to worry about, so I only really have the time to play magic at FNM; it doesn't make economical sense to spend an exorbitant amount of money on authentic cards that will see play maybe 5 times a month.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
TL;DR: I think counterfeiting poses a significant problem to the future of the game, but I will continue to use proxies so long as they are available to me.
Sep 7, 2015I'm aware that GW are the optimal colors for us, but does anybody think the recently announced Lumbering Falls will have a place in Bogles? 4 mana for a 3/3 hexproof manland is solid in itself; consider casting rancor to get a 5/5 hexproof manland until end of turn, rancor falls off and back into our hand, rinse and repeat. I think that hexproof lands could add a whole new dimension to the deck, what do you folks think?Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
Sep 1, 2015Hey guys, I got the day off work last Friday and was able to attend FNM for the first time in quite a bit. Since the previous time I went, I've been toying around with less spiritdancers, upgrading to a playset of canopies and some other goodies:Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
Long story short, I dominated the majority of my first games, but struggled against Burn, Storm, and Living End during games 2 & 3. I couldn't draw an answer for Eidolon of the Great Revel and my graveyard hate was quickly taken out by Destructive Revelry and other removal. I finished the night 3-2 my first time running the deck and that was without the canopies, so I don't know if it was just an unlucky night or if my deck/sideboard isn't well suited to my meta. The majority of build played in my meta are: Burn, Living End, Twin variants, and infect. Any reccomendations for sideboard answers to these decks? Or ways that I can tweak my main deck? I always tend to run 65 maindeck cards because I have difficulty deciding and like to have options; does an extra 5 cards really have that much impact on consistent draws? Once again, thanks for the advice, fellas.
Aug 7, 2015Joban8 posted a message on Blogatog: Full Art Lands, New ZEN Dual Lands Confirmed, No Enemy FetchesBummer. I quit the game before starting college, sometime during the Future Sight block. I started playing again a little over a year ago and was looking forward to cracking some packs to find enemy fetches. Regardless, I'm still pretty jazzed to open a new set from the Zendikar plane; I missed out on some pretty bad ass blocks during 2009 - RTR.Posted in: The Rumor Mill

TLDR: When you're butthurt about people being butthurt about other people being butthurt, you're just an idiot.
Nov 6, 2015Joban8 posted a message on The Magic Street Journal: How to Handle "That Guy"Posted in: ArticlesQuote from Klamsmith »This isn't a platform for your victim complex. The article was fine until the phrase "The elephant in the room is women and minorities playing Magic in unwelcoming areas" where your article turns into the great plight facing women in gaming. Three of my good magic friends are homosexual we play magic at three different venues regularly. There are several female regulars we see and play with as well and if someone says something degrading to them they wouldn't hesitate to call them out on it, they don't expect a white knight to save them. The thing is "That Guy" is already reguarded as an a-hole wherever he is. Stereotypes exist thats the cold hard truth it's your job to change that perspective. This article shouldn't be about what I have to do as a player if I see BS I'm calling BS on someone acting like an a-hole. It shouldn't be about what a judge should do or what a store owner should do they already understand what needs to be done. It should be about helping women change that stigma of "just being there for their boyfriend" and "not understanding how to play". My wife plays magic with me as well the only time anyone said anything to her was two years ago when she boomerranged a guys first and second attempt at putting a land into play at fnm. Who just ended up rage quitting and leaving the store after she called him out. So yes magic has a number of "That Guys" who are the internet trolls of real life and the number one rule is don't feed the trolls.
Tldr: Defend yourself from the beta's at the magic shop.
Bravo, my friend. This starting off fairly interesting until it turned into a soap box for political correctness. "That" guy certainly exists, but it's not a given that all ********s are racist/sexist/transphobic/other labels that you're trying to push. Stereotypes exist and they're not going away. I'm a man who's dating a transgender woman, but I don't get butthurt when we play with our group of friends and they crack an off-color joke every now and then. It's called humor and it's a two-way street; she gets in on the banter and gives it right back. I completely understand that when you're playing at an FNM or casual event with new players, these kinds of comments and jokes are uncalled for and simply make you an ********. However, in the comfort of your own playgroup, with people you know, what's the problem? Because chances are that if a player can't take a mild joke then they're not somebody I'd want in my playgroup. Everybody has their own insecurities and joking about them with others is a great way to find acceptance. You want to write a piece about social problems affecting LGSs? Investigate the poor hygiene that's exhibited by, unfortunately, a large number of players; I find that to be a much more influential factor affecting the experiences of new players...unless of course it's rude to stereotype people who suffer from alblutophobia?
