A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

I know that the base set has been pruned down again and again, but look at those 24 cards. They are simple cards that really showcase what each color is all about. Come on....Flight, Fear, the ever so commonly referenced bench marker: Grizzly Bears. Wrath of God, baby!

It's just a shock that Stone Rain is out, read the card of the day from Monday, August 2, 2004:

"Alpha common. Currently at 18 (and counting?), Stone Rain has appeared in more core sets and expansions than any other Magic card."

So that's my point. Xth has broke a lot of rules. The Rain is out because Cyroclasm is at the same cost. Maybe ol' Stony will be back in Lorwyn?

For all the nay-sayers that say new cards won't be in Xth, let's look at what Xth is breaking so far:

    1. The 'Holy 24': 24 cards that have never left the base set. (bye bye stone rain!)

    2. No black borders in a base set

    3. No legendary creatures in a base set

    4. Print cards with pre-game connotations (mulligan, deck construction, Leylines etc.) in modern era base sets, broken with Relentless Rats

    5. Precedent of 350 cards made by last 4 base sets

Is a new card really so far off? Rolleyes

I thought this was an interesting article:

That is a good article. I agree that it's weird that regular size actors have been portraying dwarfs lately in films. Still, I had a friend that had partial dwarfism (his dad had full dwarfism) and he totally understood the difference between humans with dwarfism and fantasy dwarfs. I really don't think that Wizards aren't printing dwarfs as a PC reason, but it's just the Otarian cliche that killed them. I really thought that the Boros would have a few, but at least they had Minotaurs.

Demolish... I thought there were others. There isn't an "art" search on gatherer, but I had the distinct impression that there were at least 3 dwarf arts out there. I was wrong it seems.

That's a reprint of art from Odyssey though so it doesn't really count, and it's part of a base set anyway. If there were Dwarves in TSP block I'd be impressed.

Still, I think Wizards might drop the Dwarf bomb on us.

I think that we are going to be surprised with the overall power level of Xth, so it's too early to say red is overpowered

Don't forget how there are a lot of dwarves on red art recently. That's got to count for something.

    Examples?

Name one "Tribal" Vedalken card. Please.

I know that there aren't any Vedalken tribal cards, but keep in mind that the 2 blocks they appeared appeared (not counting the one in Future Sight) in only had a whopping SIX tribal related cards (Rakdos, Raksha Golden Cub, Myr Matrix, Vindictive Mob, Ratcatcher, and Skeletal Vampire).

What I'm saying is that it's not their fault the blocks they were in were not Tribal. There is surely room for more tribal abilities, though!

On a side note, I think Zombies are going to get a resurgence because of Undead Warchief being shifted.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed about Dwarves!

By Ummmmm I think that you mean "Merfolk". Cool

Lord of Atlantis wasn't shifted for no reason!

Well, either that or Vedalken. Anyone think they will be in Lorwyn? They had 2 arms in Ravnica until Momir Vig gave them 4 arms which you see on Vigean Graftmage. Anyone think they will be in Lorwyn? Remember also that Vedalken Æthermage is futureshifted.

Personally I'd like to see a return to Dwarves, Orcs, and Merfolk since they are classics. They've tried to re-do Blue's iconic race as Vedalken and as Moonfolk, but I don't think they are as viable.

    The real answer: Muraganda Petroglyphs

I'm serious. Say you pick up the 'glyphs in a mid to late pick, which will happen often, you will have a boost for all of these vanillas you pick! It's just a limited trick!

Although I wouldn't doubt that another cycle of cards could be printed later that make tokens with the vanilla cycles names...

Shouldn't Kher Keep be part of the "Kobolds of Kher Keep" cycle?

    Here is an example: http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?&id=1795

He used to say "Goblin card" put now it says "Goblin permanent". Hmm...

Compare these two, however: http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?&id=39594 and http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?&id=39547

It would seem that any card that gives a P/T bonus or other creature only abilities like vigilance will say "---- creature" instead of just the creature type. Notice how in the Boneknitter example, it just says "target zombie", this is because any permanents can regenerate, and not just creature permanents.

Tribal cards are going to be quite interesting, I'm sure! I am really excited to see how wizards will develop them!

I'm in for the Leaden Fists with vigilance and all. All cards are decent, but that's it. Good intro-analysis, Seds! Smile

I think that blue vigilance makes the most sense compared to the other PLC crazy-pie abilities (red bounce? wtf?). Serra Sphinx = win condition in mono-blue control. Leaden Fists? Decent "removal" and a possible enhancement for your win condition. Wink

sounds great. sucks it dies to sulphur elemental though. i wish it was 2/2. we'll see if dragonstorm can evolve to deal with all the new hate.

What might happen would be white siding in the censer and dragonstorm siding in Sulphur Elemental to deal with the siding that white will do...
