just save your money for m11.

conflux has very few money cards. you'll get 1-2 but thats really it. roe has some nice money cards but they're all mythic so good luck with that. m10 gets replaced by m11 soon enough that impacts card prices a ton as things do or don't get reprinted. worldwake is terrible with jace being the only thing your really want to see. zendikar is neat, but your chances of making back what you paid is limited. despite what whatshisface said your chances of getting fetches is not practically assured to 4 per box. thats not how probability works.

so what? its a casual game, not a tournament, shouldn't matter at all.

what matters more in a casual setting, playing the game... or not using proxies? i mean. if it comes down to not playing vs. playing, playing wins. this whole thing is rather silly.

this entire thread is an example of magic players taking magic too seriously. if he was using proxies to test a deck before he finished building it, in a casual setting, and let it be known that he was using proxies for testing purposes... who the hell cares? why bash him for it too?

i don't like when mythics become staples and rares become junk no one wants. i should not be opening packs entirely in the hopes of getting a mythic.

How is it short term profit? Sales have increased since the introduction of Mythics, without fail; even WWK, a set mostly derided for the fact it has a single chase card, experienced record-breaking sales.

If there's some sort of fallout coming here, I really don't see what it is.

how much of that success rides on the back of the immensely popular zendikar though? it stands to reason that if the first set of the block was incredibly popular the second set is going to ride on its back a bit. though part of what made zendikar so popular was the fetches and the treasures, two things which are largely ignored when discussing its popularity.

further, it would only be a matter of time before people realize its more cost effective to just buy singles than open boxes where you stand a chance of not even getting that chase mythic, or even coming close to making your money back because the only playables are mythic, and not all of them at that. for instance, if i open a box and the total value of that opened box isn't even half of what i paid, i'm not going to open another. if the total value meets or exceeds what i paid, i'm going to buy and open another.

speaking personally, after wwk and roe, the set after m11 is really going to have to wow me get me to buy a box. the price of a box should at least be close to whats contained inside, or theres no point in buying it. crappy rares and 1 or 2 chase mythics doesn't make it worth it.

The one good thing about the price increases is that it makes it easier to get money out of the game for overpriced cards. I drafted last night for $15. One of my packs had a vengevine in it, which I prompty sold for $20. So next week is a free draft, and a $5 profit, for a card that's a $5 card at best, if it weren't for the fact it's standard legal.

I had a knight of the reliquary I dumped for $10 too. A $2 card if it weren't standard legal. Baneslayer is a $5-$8, outside standard. So it give you a nice window to sell cards for a lo more than they are worth.

and if you don't pull that mythic rare or that one rare thats worth lots?

i find its a lot harder for me to make up the cost of a draft, even if i place first, unless i pull a mythic (thats worth money). it started to get really noticeable with worldwake and with roe its damn near impossible to make up cost unless you have a lot of luck. honestly. the packs i win are worth more unopened than opened because of the sheer amount of worthless garbage in the sets.

    i like it and i don't.
its great for new players to have access to something familiar, its bad that they can't use it at an fnm.

    the continual money sink.
imbalance allowing for one deck type to dominate for long periods of time.
all the garbage rares that will never be remotely playable in a competitive deck.

    stuff

thats my feeling on mythics exactly. its my feeling on the rising costs to build a competitive standard deck too. its also exactly what i went out and did.i stopped playing standard for a bit and dumped the money on building a deck for legacy, and fixing up a few of my casual decks. it was a great decision. its just aggravating that it comes to that instead of going to fnms for standard.

i'd keep my cards and keep playing. same way i still go back and play my old nintendo/atari/what have you games. as long as theres still someone else that i can use them with then theres no reason to try and sell them.

doesn't matter if the game would be stagnant, its not about being competitive at that point, its about having fun. like using a standard deck of playing cards. they're always the same but every game can still be different.

isn't any summoned creature technically pure mana?

though i suppose it depends on which form you're going with, the idea that its something ripped from somewhere, or that its a manifestation of the idea of something from somewhere...

so everyone is saying standard is the most expensive format? ill gladly compare legacys price jumps to standards. sneak attack was 12-14 bucks beginning of april now they r 30+, force of will 25 now 60, wasteland 15 now 25-30. now granted some prices jump bc of newer cards but some just jump bc of popularity/availability.

and those prices tend to not fall. once you have them you have them. thats it, you're done you don't worry about it. with standard if a card is worth $30, when it rotates out, it could be worth $5 (rare to go that low i know, point was that they dip dramatically).

i stopped playing standard. i've always hated the price tag associated with it, but now, in large part because of mythics, its just costing too much money to stay competitive. if i'm going to invest in a deck its going to be in a deck where i don't have to worry about the cards rotating and losing value, or having to be replaced with something else in 3 months. legacy might be expensive to break into, but once you're there you don't worry about much, standard is a continual money sink. always has been. the big difference now though is that the money cards are harder to get because the price tags are higher while the average price of a rare is lower. making it harder to trade for the things you need, and meaning you can either buy a box and try to get one and get mostly garbage, or take the cost of the box and get 2 of whatever the chase rare is.

i like it when all the parts of my aluren deck come together and its

    t1: hickory woodlot
t2: ancient tomb aluren cavern harpy parasitic strix

it happens more often then you'd think, but you usually just have to dig for the parts with things like wall of blossoms, coiling oracle, and raven familiar
