i was huge into ultra pro, and then i got a few batches that were constantly splitting so i tried some other brands.

every single pack of kmc sleeves i tried, when i shuffled at least 2 would split. gave up after 4 packs.

the dragonshields were great, until about a month later when they became impossible to shuffle and would stick together, all 5 boxes of those have all ended the same way.

the japanese ultra pro's are really nice high quality sleeves, but because they're glossy i have to use a playmat or they scuff and you can tell what card is in which sleeve.

ultimately i'm just going to stick with the basic ultra pro matte sleeves. when the batch isn't a bad one they last for a few years.

How did you request a new one? I'd dig the Sarkhan Vol one, mine has no artwork at all.

i called them and was like hey i lost my dci card, can you send me a new one?
    and so they did.
unfortunately i hate sarkhan vol. i hate him so much, he represents the stereotypical magic player and its insulting to have to carry him in my wallet.

i'm all for new art. what i'm not for is new art that replaces iconic/good art, or new art with every printing.

  • posted a message on What do you use for tokens?
i normally use dice. i've been trying to switch over to the actual printed tokens because they're easier to signify attacks, equips, etc with. the problem is that i need a crapton of saprolings, and there are a lot of other token types that you either can't get, or can't get in a large quantity.

for instance, what good is the 1 minion token that came with the phyrexia vs. the coalition, when i'm making a minion token with phyrexian processor every turn. all the cards that make thrull tokens but there being no easy to get an actual thrull token is another example. also bats.

i could use some of the thrulls from fallen empires that i have in insane amounts, or vampire bats as bats, but that gets confusing unless you black out areas of card face and i hate doing that to even worthless cards.

i think its from a flavor standpoint. the idea that they can't die and can only be locked away/put to sleep sort of thing.

Who cares about what species she is? As long as she has boobs, I sure don't.

Seriously. I'm gonna go with leopard/nacatl here.

    ...you some kind of furry?

these sorts of comments are what scare women away from the game more than anything else honestly

aren't nacatl's meant to be a new, independent cat type in magic? like a nacatl is a nacatl. not a cheetah, not a panther, not any other type of cat, just a nacatl.

its a core set... so um. yes. it does have to be similar to m10. thats the point of a core set. roe, wwk, zen, they're expansions they're meant to explore the more intricate details of the game. core sets are supposed to be very basic.

...not digging the sarkhan vol art on my new dci card though. makes me want to lose it again.

i don't think it'll be worth the price of admission.
most of the stuff you'd find in an rdw is pretty cheap to begin with and the stuff that is printed as foils already still isn't worth that much either. foil chain lightnings would be nice but if they include it it'll probably only be 1.

i dunno, it seems like a boring and uninspired choice for a premium deck. especially when there are so many more options to go with, of archetypes that are more popular.

When are we just finally going to give up and stop taking hits from Wizards? It's clearer and clearer they don't care about us at all. They're really just trying to attract other players while assuming that all of us are just going to deal with it keep playing.

We need to create a list of grievances and someone needs to nail it to the main entrance door of Wizards of the Coast. The 95 Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Magic the Gathering... but we gotta work on the name, I don't like it.

or you could you know... stop buying product and attending events. decreased sales and attendance are going to do a lot more than people complaining at their door.

personally i never liked extended. i've played for a long time, played mostly standard, some legacy, lots of casual, lots of limited. extended never did anything for me. these new changes though are enough to get me to consider building a deck for it.

the meta has always been shifting, aggro, control, combo whatever it fluctuates, always has. the only complaint i have right now is that it shifts too drastically. we go from having 1 control archetype dominate, to 1 mid-range aggro archetype dominate, back to 1 control archetype dominating. thats bad. there needs to be balance and less of a drastic swing with each new block. bring spells in all colors on par with each other rather than 'oh blue is weak lets fix that' and then something like black gets nothing, making it, only to have to make it strong again by giving blue nothing. etc.

i do agree with all the complaining about mythic rares though. screw those things. drove down the price of rares to the point where theres no reason to buy packs.

this one was overly predictable and the origins of liliana are far too similar to those of garruk/chandra/elspeth so far. changing the setting doesn't mix things up much.

her character also feels more white than anything else in this web comic. the next few are going to have a bit of a time correcting that in a way that isn't just her suddenly being like blah blah i'll never be used like that again blah blah blah screw everyone its all about me.

the art reminded me of some of the old mtg comics though. that was kinda neat.

While this is all true, and it appears to only got slightly harder to get fullsets/playsets since the addition of mythic rares, what this analysis underplays is the narrowing of value distribution.

You can look at this at any scale but let's say you care about getting playsets. If it only takes 8 boxes to get a full set of rares why open the next 8 to get Mythics. It basically means that the full value of opening the next 8 boxes lies on getting the Mythics. 8 boxes to get 30 cards(2 sets)... and not all those cards are equal valued.

Whereas before 7 boxes could get you 2 of each rare... and the next 7 boxes you would open to get 222 cards (2 sets). Not all those cards are equal value either. But if we assume that each set has an equal number of must have chase cards split over rare/mythic the value is split over a wider card base at the same difficulty to attain.

Nothing I've said so far really matters if you are going to open those 16 boxes anyway, it just means you will have less stock to trade with, because equally good in demand rares will be worth considerably less than their mythic equivalents.

However, where the problem comes in is variance. Where as you are guarenteed a number of rares, you are not guarenteed a number of mythics. Because like anything within any rarity certain cards are virtually worthless all the value will lie on a only a few of those cards.

Have you ever flipped a coin 50 times and recorded the results?.. it will roughly be about 50/50 under a lot of conditions.. Have you ever rolled a 20 sided die 50 times and recorded the results?.. Before we would get even close to seeing an even distribution with the die we'd need a giantic sampling. Mythic being 1/4 basically makes the set a bit over 3x times larger for all intensive purposes. So figuring out the odds of getting mythic X becomes 1 in 1200 instead of 1 in 360. This only compounds the value of certain cards.

So if you are the type of person who was opening 14 boxes and trading to fill your sets. Would you be be happy opening 2 extra boxes now and be much less assured to get what you want while not having as much valuable extra stuff to trade? If you are opening enough boxes this will balance out.. but that number is much higher than it was before.

this this a billion times this.

it also means that for the most part the only people opening boxes are going to be shop owners as there is little incentive to opening a box where the rares are mostly worthless and can easily be obtained for $0.50 each. which then means that the majority of people who are buying and opening boxes are the shop keepers and not the players, which means they can then charge $75 for a jace 2.0 as demand is there and availability isn't. which would mean that mythics are a disaster in their current state.
