i hate cards designed for other formats. half the crap they've designed for edh recently has been obnoxiously degenerate, things designed for limited are great... but only playable in limited. i wish they'd just design cards, let the players decide what works in what formats and stop trying to force it.
[CARD] Emmara Tandris, however, does not appeal to any psychocraphic except perhaps very, very new Timmies. Timmies who don't know about Avacyn, Angel of Hope or the plethora of bigger and badder things out there. Everyone will groan when they open her in a pack.
I feel its incredibly poorly designed and leaves a lot of design space unexplored. It feels as if the few interesting cards are only interesting because theyre a take on other, older, powerful cards.
The champions are a horribly executed mess of clashing designs and flavors which makes all ten of them bland and boring.
the whole gates matter thing is forced, but not even really explored.
there are several cards that could/should be mono colored but are instead multicolored for multicolored sake.
there are a lot of creatures that needlessly had a fat ass tacked on to bump up the casting cost to slow things down, and as a result lose flavor and playability. A few have a higher power for the same reason.
the guild mechanics that were introduced in rtr and gtc feel barely glossed over here as well, as if someone said oh oops we forgot to include scavenge here stick it on these two cards. Or whatever guild mechanic you like scavenge was just the first to come to mind.
ive been playing since revised. Two other sets in the entire games history have made me not want to bother playing the game. Now i can add a third.
edit: oh and including shocks in packs every so often feels like a gimmick to sell a ****ty set.
Debt to the Deathless. It's Exsanguinate on crack. Absolutely monstrous spell in EDH. Might see Standard play with Rhox Faithmender. A finisher in Aristocrats?
Edit: Ninja nath'd.
until you do the math and realize that the life gain/damage is minimal compared to exsanguinate which is in the same colors.
won't see play in standard, won't see play in aristocrats.
edit: will see play in edh, and be replaced by exsanguinate in a month.
easily the worst designed set i've seen in years. completely uninspired. completely lacking in flavor. the few "good" cards are just old cards made weaker that won't actually see play in about 2 months. i won't be going to this prerelease, or spending any money on any of this product. good job wizards.
You guys keep reiterating that control isn't dead but only list one control deck which will undoubtedly be less viable after dragons maze meanwhile there's tons of aggro decks being mentioned. Oh and mid range aggro is still aggro.
i hope theres some really flavorful non-emmara-esque-failure legends, but that its not a major theme, just a few heroes here and there. nothing major. too many legends really makes for an uninteresting environment outside of limited/edh
Emmara wasn't a design failure (though her card is poorly designed), she was a development failure. Emmara in design had the Voice of Resurgence ability, which is great for her character.
As for the champions who work in groups, such as Boros and Simic champions, remember that the champions are not running the maze by themselves. Every guild is attempting to block each other guild from completing the maze. Ral Zarek, not a champion, even says he will be involved. Each champion will undoubtedly have an escort or allies, so Vorthos shouldn't be concerned about their ally-centered abilities.
Teysa was a miss. Definitely.
extremely good point. the development failures lately have been pretty absurd.
or bubble matrix

with how bad the rest of the set is, you bet thats what they did.
color me unsurprised.

yeah. Control is dead.
i use to tell people it was my hardcore band.
edit: and that we had hits like black lotus and dark ritual
my thoughts exactly!
she fails on flavor and fails on function. the art doesn't even match the effect. boring boring boring boring!
