awesomer phantasm posted a message on Loyal DrakeI’m sorry, but like, did blue really need this? It would be a format staple if they’d made it white and called it like “Loyal Squire” or “Loyal Vanguard,” and it feels so wasted on blue which probably barely even plays it compared to other card advantage options. Ugh. I mean it’s cool and stuff but ugh.Posted in: The Rumor Mill -

Literally signed up just to laugh at you. The price of the cards without the foil easily breaks even, and a foil Brainstorm goes for $30 out of this set.
But, yeah, the fact that they don't pay you to take these cards means that it's a rip off. It's like when you don't pull a foil misprint planeswalker out of every pack, just absolute robbery.
On mcm the cheapest you can get the whole set is 13€ while cards individually 11,5€ (no foil included, I rounded up some cards, I used the price trend but nobody actually trades at that price so cards go for closer to their lowest price) so you really need to hit those higher value foils to break even (as in counterspell).
If I were to buy this from my flgs I would need open foil brainstorm or I just lose money. They sell these things for 19.5€ euros. -

NGW posted a message on So, Pelakka Wurm is a rare...Yeah, yeah, I know the argument "he's way too good at uncommon for limited", I get that.Posted in: Magic General
Here's the counterpoint, how about they just, you know, not reprint it at all in the set? I mean, it's certainly not a card people were fighting tooth and nail to get a reprint, right? Is it really so necessary that this format have Pelakka Wurm in it? Couldn't they have just..made something new or different for that spot? -

Manite posted a message on Ravnica 3 - Guild Leaders, Guildmages & Other Cycles SpeculationPosted in: SpeculationQuote from Decadent_Creed »A guild-vehicle cycle in the vein of keyrunes would be very welcome. Three mana, adds one of two colors with a crew ability that turns into a creature with an evergreen keyword, or an ability that triggers upon combat damage to a player.
Yeah, I guess I could see that as the new rock cycle. Thing is, they need some manner of colored mana cost ability to push players towards drafting Vehicles in the proper guild. Perhaps tap for A or B, Crew N, and an AB activated ability? Then they're more like an evolution of Keyrunes. Say, what if they were designed such that each Keyrune can single-handedly crew the corresponding Vehicle when in creature mode? Though good luck with that Orzhov Crew 1 Vehicle...
Suddenly I'm getting a mental image of the Vehicles all being Guild-themed go-karts, Mario Kart-style. Well, they do have races on Ravnica...
The Azorius kart would be built for safety and control.
The Dimir kart would be outfitted with a cloaking device.
The Rakdos kart would be designed to go fast, and have lots of spikes. What's the point of racing if you're going to go slow and/or look dumb doing it?
The Gruul kart would be a cobbled-together Flintstonian bulldozer, built to smash if not necessarily have the best steering.
The Selesnya kart would be built with passengers in mind.
The Orzhov kart would be built for style, first and foremost. We're talking made of gold and decorated with gems and silk banners.
The Izzet kart would run on an experimental (and probably not dangerous) energy source with occasional bouts of spontaneous overload-powered turbo emissions.
The Golgari kart would be a big, icky bug.
The Boros kart would be built for combat, tough enough to take a direct hit from a Skarrg Goliath but fast enough to drive circles around it.
The Simic kart would run on experimental biofuel derived from plants.
And thus, Ravni-Kart is born! -

A lot of the new theros stuff from premium packs i see people get excited for, then try to move them and they cant. A huge portion of ftv cards just sit and rot. Most of these stand a good chance of being sold at a loss despite what paper says.
Regardless, theyre getting a ton of flak thrown at them for these products.

i'd have been sold on these at this price point if they also included the weapons and nykthos maybe. as is? really tired of this product already.

we like to think this, but what magic players are in the game strictly for X format?
its a misconception. even the people who strictly draft often buy limited release product. the people who play commander are into everything. legacy players will pick up what they need from new sets. yes, there are a wide array of ways to play magic, but magic players gobble up everything thrown at them. even more so when you start planting cards for other formats in products. we like to think they don't market products at the entire market, but they really do and we eat it up.
how many commander precons have sold because of a legacy plant. how many secret lairs sold because people liked the art, or are into goblins. the grim reality is magic products are aimed toward magic players. its our own little bubbles that make us think they're not aimed at us, or a particular subset of players.
hell that doesn't even account for the lotto aspect of things. how many packs have you seen cracked playing the *insert card name* lotto.
they want dollars. they're not going to design and release products aimed squarely at one audience when they can aim it all of them. the minute we start accepting that fact we can stop fooling ourselves and push for legitimate change.

they need to slow the **** down. focus on making products i want to buy longer term (better sets) and shy away from gimmicky short print run stuff that i feel like i HAVE to buy or i miss out.
there's just too much crap on the market competing for my dollars. i'd rather see a sustainable higher quality lower priced product than these relatively expensive avalanche style releases.
yeah yeah, you don't have to buy every product, and not every product is for every player. i skip the large majority of them, but its also caused me to lose interest in a lot of the draft and standard format stuff because of decreased quality. they're definitely exploiting the ***** out of the FOMO mentality and its nauseating. it also gets really frustrating to be bombarded with product releases worth it or otherwise, over a longer period it just erodes interest in the over all product. when you have to pick and choose because you're having so much thrown in your face, ultimately you just kind of... move on to something that you can enjoy at a less frenetic pace.
also betting that this is where the oubliette reprint happens, and people will be rightfully angry about it.

I have a prime speaker zegana combo deck that runs very little interaction and just combos out. It runs a lot of the so called staples.
At certain tables people cant keep up with it. Its a combo monster. Even without counterspells they just seem to leave it unchecked and it dominates.
But you know what stops it? The tiniest bit of disruption.
Last week it went 2-1, the first two games were full of people not running anything to slow it down at all. Nothing. Not one card got removed from the table, not one spell cast stopped. Zero interaction from my opponents and i exploited that. The last game though? The last game had a guy playing queen marchesa akido-style. He had an answer for everything. I had to actually think. It was the best game ive had in months. It used a bunch of cards you wouldnt see in your typical staples build.
The point of my anecdote is no one forces you to play staples, and creativity coupled with smart plays can beat a honed deck.
People try so hard to jam all these things into their decks because theyre good or the internet tells them to. They forget that something as simple as deflecting palm, or red elemental blast, can ruin an entire deck's gameplan, and steal victory.
The only one forcing you to play things you feel are staples, or upfront powerful cards, is you.

Did you miss the flying and haste to equipped creatures part? Also that hes bigger than those guys. Legendary doesnt need to mean overly complex. I mean, isamaru is a grizzly bears for w that sees tons of play sooo
