I was considering Mardu Pyro! But it feels more like a midrange deck, doesn´t it?

Hello everyone! I´m in search for a deck to play in Modern!! Since I´m actually on UW Control and even though I love it, I´m trying to find another deck that matches with me and how I enjoy playing Magic. As you can see, I like playing control but I also feel really confortable playing tempo decks (I play all kind of Delver decks mainly in Pauper). So, with that in mind, I´m loocking to find 2 kind of decks:

I´m loocking for a more proactive rather than reactive style of control deck (I love to play with information of my opps hand so I would like something with a good amount of discard. IE: IoK, Thoughtseize and Collective Brutality) or, for a more tempo oriented and/or tempo-control deck, maybe using Delver, Piromancer, discard or something like that.

In terms of cards pool I own a good amount of the Modern staples and don´t mind to invest in the pieces I miss in order to make a deck I really enjoy!

So, if you have any ideas or sugestions, It would be great for me in order to acknowledge those types of decks that fits me and get me on track to find what I´m loocking for!!

So, little report from my first time playing this awesome deck that I´ve been wanting to try in paper for so much! (As a side note, at my LGS we use MTGO rules)

So, this was the list I used:

So, to the matches we go.

    Round 1 vs Stompy 2-0

As expected, an easy matchup. Just transmute when ran out of fog effects and go mill till win.

    Round 2 vs Affi 0-2

So, here things get more interesting. Game 1 he had a slow hand so I proceed to develop my board with 2 jace´s and hitting land drops. After a couple of draw spells on both sides he get´s to stablish an offense able to kill me but I´m with enough fog spells in my hand for days. I´m at 4 life but he has all his Galvanics in the yard, only have to be awere of fling, since I have my clock on with my jaces. A few turns later, he flings me x 2 and I only have 1 counter in hand.

Game 2 I had 2 Counterspell, 1 Dispel and Circle red from the sideboard but don´t remember what I sided out for. Things are going well since I transmuted for my circle turn 3 and start negating his burn spells while also having 2 fogs in hand. Sadly, a few turns later he dispeled my fog followed by a muddle from my side and a pyroblast from his. GG, had no more permition or lands to pay for another fog.

    Round 3 2-1 vs MBC

Game 1 developed very well for me. Being able to deploy 2 early erasure´s combined with some draw spells, fogs and permition for the only things I couldn´t beat (Gary and Corrupt). It was kind of close, but managed to outrace him with my jace´s.

Game 2 had a late forest on table and already took a bunch of damage from creatures that I was dead to anything (even to a Sing in Blood or Witches activation).

Game 3 Circle paid his slot in the sideboard since MBC can´t deal with it when it´s in play and that allowed me to side 6 fog spells for more permision and lifegain, as a way to combat his only real way to beat me dealing no combat damage.

As my sideboard options and little splash of white I found that it never harmed my curve as I almost never drew it and with 6 fetches, when you side in white cards, you can find it pretty easily. The main reason for doing this was Burn. Before going to my LGS played a few solo games to test this MU and it was REALLY REALLY BAD. Even post board games, with 4 Disrepairs I found myself been overwhelmed by Curse and Thermo´s constant ping damage even with 2 Disrepairs in play. And that also enabled the circle black, wich allowed me to set the above mentioned plan. Also I have 2, even though you only need 1 you can get recked from an early Duress or by you not being abble to counter it/hide it with brainstorm.

Overall I really liked the deck and it was a blast to play (at least for me! Don´t know for my opponents. I guess it´s too much antimagic? Lol). Didn´t expect the affi MU to be that hard (even thow it allways felt winable) but the combination of burn + big fast creatures + permision is an uphill battle.

So, I would like to build a some what competitive Pauper EDH Aggro deck since it seems that midrange or control decks are the way you should go and I would like to take something different to my playgroup. At my LGS they play 2 vs 2 using any uncommon card as a Commander.

I was thinking on a Boros Go Wide kind of deck, but I just feel that aggro in general just don´t have what it takes to do 40 points of damage using 1 offs.

Any suggestions will be of much help, from Commanders or just common cards to use as a Boros deck or even some other aggro viable idea.

Congratulations! I´m about to finish this deck myself and I´ll be playing it for sure.

One thing that comes to mind. Seems to be that almost all pauper decks have some form of GY hate (specially Relics) and as this deck and specially your list uses GY as a way to get CA, how bad is a resolved Relic for you?

Thank you! That was what I´ve found on youtube but thought that I could be missing something since there aren´t that much "serious matches" videos.

Hello to all this 15 minutes nerve wracking breakfast lovers, I´m here for your advice and wisdom.

I would like to enter Modern format (never played it before) even tho I am a long time Magic player, but mainly been playing Standard and Pauper. While making some brainstorming and research on this forum I found this deck. What I like of this particular deck? First of all, I love combo, I love having fun and I love Magic. Sounds like Eggs right? What else do I want? Well I also love decks that challenge you every time and every game (and also my opponent) and for what I´ve seen throgh this thread Eggs delivers at all points mentioned above.

I would need an investment of 200/250$ to build this in paper as I have some of the cards and I think that´s afordable (considering other decks and cards prices).

My biggest question here is if you think that Eggs can be competitive enough in order to keep the pace in a LGS 20ish players events. I don´t want neither aim to win a GP or a PT, I just want to have and affordable, fun and competitive enough deck to play modern and because I consider myself a grindy player that would throw in lots of hours of testing and playing in order to be as good as I can with what I´m playing and it would be disappointing after all that time and money invested to find that I can´t just attend to a local event and try to do well.

I´ve been doing some Youtube research and It´s kind of hard to find good videos post ban. Do you know any streamer/particular youtuber that has some of this content on their channells?

Hope you can answer my questions and thank you all for your time to read. Cheers

I´m currently using the first I-N-S deck list of your initial post (don´t know how to tag decks) but changing 4 Brainstorm for 4 Impulse and 2 Gigadrowse and one of each Tolarian Winds Sprotuing Vines for 4 Gitaxian Probe .

I´m just forcing myself to combo off on turn 4 because I´m playing solo matches and feel like aggro/burn decks will give you 4 turns or so. But if I´m on a real match I will allways wait as much as possible.

I feel like allways want to be on the draw (extra card) and Impulse allows you to go for and dig what you need while at the same time move away what you don´t need. On the other hand Gitaxian Probe is a "free" cantrip, one of the most precious things for this deck. Not just because it gives you a card, but it also ticks up your storm number and that is not something to bypass (I´ve found that with Storm = 8 you can get it done, but you still have enough lands in your deck to draw and get stucked. Usually with 10/11 Storm you are allways going to have what you need to keep going).

On the other hand, Rite of Flame is giving me a hard time. I never feel it´s a bad card (It´s a good ramp spell giving you +4 red the fourth copy, it summs storm for only 1 mana while allways gives you more than what you have spent and in many times it has been my heroe giving me those extra mana I needed to go off). But, on the other hand, I would NEVER pick it with an Impulse over any other cantrip or combo piece unlees I´m searching for a mana source desperately. I still have to playtest without it in order to have a feeling of a deck with more cantrips and less ramp.

So, if anyone wants to have some fun at playing Magic, then you need to play a combo deck, at least one time!

I love combo decks in Pauper that are not Familiar/Drake combos. Why? Because they are so clunky and hilarious to play even when you fail to combo out. Sure, 99% of the time they are not going to win you any tourney but you will enjoy that time, for sure.

Been doing some solo games and you only need 2 or 3 to understand that Brainstorm is SO BAD! It get´s you locked down so easily! With that in mind I only want scry effects, so I play 4 Preordain and Impulse. I don´t like Ponder either because I don´t want to shuffle what I send to the bottom. So, for now, I´ve taken out the Brains, Gigadrowse and one Tolarian-Sprout in order to make room for a playset of probes and impulses.

So, with this build (mono islands) I´m tracking my turns and allways try to combo on turn 4, wich I´ve done in several times (more than 50% of the time). But whe are talking about game situations soooo narrow that even a simple Daze would ruin you. On the other hand, I think that in most of the real matches you can´t whait more than 4 turns and not die for it.

Have anyone done more testing with this deck?

Hey, thanks for replying. I think Elves MU is bad, even after sideboard since they also bring in answers that are even better or as good as ours.

What do you think about the general game strategy Vs Affi?

I am a fan of control decks and obviuosly this is one of my taste.

Even though I never played this one in particular I´ll try to build it. My only concern is how it performs against fast aggro decks (Stompy, Goblins, etc).

It seems like 12 fog effects are kind of low in order to get you there in terms of milling your opponent as it is a slow win condition and as you don´t interact at all with your opponents creatures they are likely to only need 1 turn of dealing combat damage to kill you in mid/late game.

Yeah, I think it is too. Probably you need to mull as much as you need in order to have some early preasure and early counters (Daze and Spellstutter mainly).

On the other hand, at Magic Online Affinity is getting more and more popular. What do you guys think about SB options besides what we all know (Annul Steel Sabotage Curse of Chains Hydroblast etc etc? Is there any card that has proven to you worth playing in this MU?

I think that we all agree that an explosive Affi hand will allways beat us as they can land multiple 4/4s in 1 turn but, what kind of strategy do you prefer? Aggressive use of counter spells targeting as much artifacts you can ? (specially the ones that produce colored mana) Or save them in order to counter the big creatures/Atog? Is it Thoughtcast worth countering?

I´m more of a second choice player except my opponent lacks blue or red mana and they need that artifact (drum/prophetic/star) in order to keep going.
