That's frustrating because your theory accuses Christians of following a system of lies.

according to my (and most other atheists) beliefs, yes, christians do follow a system of lies. i even went so far as to tell my fiance that, when we get married, i don't want to be married by a preacher because i don't want my marriage to be based on something that i believe to be false.

basically this is an endless argument because neither one of us can actually present facts that prove the other is wrong.

"Your wife slept with someone else!"
"What!? Tell me when this happened, so I can potentially falsify your accusation by comparing it against dates I know she was with me."
"Well I don't have any real information... it's just a theory, after all."

this is where i don't think you're getting what i'm saying. i could very well have suspicions that my buddy's wife was sleeping w/ someone else and go to him based on those suspicions, w/o any real proof. but i wouldn't state "your wife is sleeping with someone else!" the more accurate terms would be "i think your wife is sleeping with someone else." just as i stated in my earlier posts, i can't prove any of this. i know i can't prove it. this is just what i think. it's my opinion. i could be wrong. it might be better to wait until i had physical proof that my buddy's wife was cheating on him before i said anything to him about it, but this thread initiatlly asked for opinions. so that's what i gave. my opinion on heaven and hell. which is i don't believe in them, and i definitely don't believe in christianity.

Well that's the difficulty. Saying that someone made up heaven and hell in order to "make people into good little boys and girls" is a very serious charge against the basis of an entire religion. It seems irresponsible to offhandedly propogate it if your theory can't even propose a specific, real origin of the deceit.

i will agree w/ the fact that it definitely is difficult. but if it's irresponsible for me to offhandedly propagate a theory that can't propose a specific, real origin, then couldn't the same be said for the christian faith? i mean, i know that the christian faith had to come from somewhere, but the basis behind it can't be scientifically proven. i may not be able to prove my theory, but it's just that: a theory. i never said i was right. that's just what i think. i don't know if i'm right. i may very well die and end up burning in hell for all of eternity. but no one knows for sure what happens. it's all about faith. i got nothing but respect for someone who can have that much faith that something actually exists, but w/o proof i just can't fathom the idea of it.

Perhaps it would be better for you to say, "I believe that the only valid parts of the Bible are those that prescribe moral values."

i don't even know if i'd go so far as to say they are "valid." a person can get moral values from reading a dr. phil book, but that doesn't mean that it's a good book. it's one man's opinion on what's right or wrong. to me the bible is just an overrated book. i know the entire book isn't just about moral values, but the way i see it, that's what a person should take from it after finishing the book.

but as i said above, it's all an opinion. even those who have faith in christ. it's just an opinion; a belief. i would never ever say "i'm right, you're wrong. end of story." i can debate religion all day, but i refuse to actually argue it because no one (not me or even the pope) can actually prove the existance of god.

i had a friend once tell me, "you've never seen a million dollars, you still believe in that." but the difference is, i could see a million dollars. i could (theoretically) go to a bank and say, "can i see a million dollars?" and they could show it to me. but i can't physically walk into a church and ask the minister to show me proof that god exists, because he can't.

No I mean, who, in specific, made up heaven and hell, under the theory that heaven and hell were made up in order to make people into good little boys and girls? For instance, if I asked "Who was responsible for the slaughter of Jews during the Holocaust?" a proper answer would not be "mankind," though it is technically correct.

Then you should at least know that the Bible cannot be summarized as a mere guide to moral living.

i can't honestly tell you who made up heaven and hell other than to say that mankind made it up. and i'd like to meet a man of faith who can tell me the answer to that w/o referring to the bible. and, actually, i can say that the bible is just a book of moral values. because, although the stories are very interesting and can be quite entertaining, i don't believe any of them ever actually happened. well, other than the whole crusifiction thing, which i think was exaggerated far beyond belief.

Nice opinions, just as nice as Simurdiak's. Now back 'em up.

there is no backing up an opinion when it comes to religion. i can disprove the existance of heaven and hell, just as much as the next guy can prove their existance. w/o referring to the bible there is no other proof of heaven and hell. and i don't see the bible as a very credible source.

An interesting theory. Who made heaven and hell up? Why did they want to scare people into being good little boys and girls?

religion arguments just goes around in circles. because my answer to this is "who wrote the bible?" man wrote the bible. i don't believe in god so no one can actually convince me that god had a hand in man's writings. and i'm not just talking out my ass. i haven't read the entire bible, but i've read a lot of it. i live in tennessee which is right in the middle of the bible belt so i grew up around religion, especially christianity. my grandfather was a southern baptist preacher, so, as a child, i was church a lot. and after living in tennessee for the past 20 years or so, i must say that i've come to the conclusion that, while i have no problem w/ christianity or anyone who believes in it, most southern baptist christians are by far the most closed minded individuals i've ever encountered.

well, i don't believe in heaven and hell. at all. in fact i think the whole entire bible is a fictional publishing. it may be "based" on actual events, but in my opinion there is no god, there is no heaven, and there is no hell. i think that the bible is just a book of moral values. it's a bunch of stories to teach us how to live "right." basically just how to be a good person. and i think that heaven and hell were made up as reward and punishment. if you're good you go to heaven when you die, and if you're bad you go to hell. basically just a way to scare people into being good little boys and girls.

i have to say that this is exactly what he deserves. and i also have to that until we get another president, osama will stay "in hiding." because we aren't even looking for him. i think it's funny how osama is behind the tragedies on 9/11, and we end up finding hussein. who coincidentally was the reason behind the gulf war. which was headed up by the orignal george bush. i'm in favor 100% for the death penalty, my only fault w/ it is the tax money that goes into it. which is also my only problem w/ giving a sentence of life w/o the possibility of parole. but that's just my opinion.

yeah, that night i was like, "yeah i get it. i screwed up." my lesson: never punch a wall in a house built in 1977. they don't make 'em like they used to. it was really messed up to look down after punching the wall and notice that my ring finger was suddenly longer than my middle finger. relocation hurts more than dislocation i think. the sad part is i've punch several walls, computer desks, monitors, dashboards, etc. since then. my temper sucks. and it always seems like girls bring it out in me. (no offense to the girls of the clan) they just have a way of making you want to punch things and yell profanities.

since i'm on the blood pressure meds everytime i go to my doctor now, she asks me if i still drink. and i always have to reply, 'yes.' i'm no alcoholic, but drinking is too much fun to just up and quit. Grin haha

damn, dude! my injury list isn't quite so bad. although i'm only 24 and i'm already on stomach meds, blood pressure meds, and allergy meds. everyday. at 19 i had my gall bladder taken out. the worst time my knee ever went out on me was in a dirt bike accident. but that doesn't count kickin the other one out of joint. that was by far the worst. and i once punch a wall and dislocated my right ring finger knuckle and broke the bones that go from my ring and pinky fingers to my wrist. that was painful and the trip to the e.r. was rather embarassing. it sucked having to tell the doctors that it happened because i got upset and punched a wall. i kept hearing, "i bet you won't do that anymore." all night long.
