Thank you, you both helped me explain it much more simply and he now says he believes me. I think he gets frustrated with me because he wants to do crazy stuff that is based on a very loose interpretation of the card text and the game doesn't work that way, so I'm the rules keeper bully always saying "it doesn't work like that, I promise!" Weird Hopefully it will all be second nature soon. Thanks!

hi, I've been teaching my boyfriend to play and he doesn't trust my call on rulings for Redirect. I tried to explain about templating and how target in Magic means a very specific thing. Can anyone explain it better?

I moved my Commander into play from the Command Zone and he says he should be able to gain control of my Commander with Redirect "because the battlefield is a zone so it's a target zone." He thinks he should be able to change the target to his side of the battlefield. I tried to explain that moving a Commander into play isn't targeting any zone. (While we're at it, saying Redirect doesn't work like a Counterspell when I play a creature would also be helpful.)

He decided to let this one go and put Redirect back into his hand. Shortly after that...

I played Feed the Clan to gain 10 life. He said he's using Redirect changing the target to him instead of me so he gains the life. I explained FtC doesn't ask me to target anyone so he can't change the target. I told him if FtC read "Target player gains 10 life" then he could change the target to himself with Redirect. This one is a little trickier so I looked at the rulings for Redirect on magiccards.info which backs me up. I can't explain it in a way that makes sense to him though, can anyone help?

It's great for players who need that Elspeth and that sword and all those staple uncommons. Still, $75 is a steep price for a precon, even if you argue the real value of all the cards added up is twice the price.

It'll be interesting to see how well it sells and if we can pick it up later for closer to $50 or less if it sits on shelves. Fire & Lightning, the "Premium Deck Series" deck that was a good starter for a Legacy burn deck, went down to $20 on sale until the stock dried up. I think it was originally $35 MSRP (maybe $40?) and I remember people saying it's a GREAT value if you want to get into Legacy on the cheap, but it was still a lot of money for people to spring for a precon. Eventually the premium deck series was cancelled. (The curly foils in the PDS decks were also annoying. I still bought 2x F&L when they hit $20.)

Sounds like an easy scam. Buy two Duel Decks, send in two Vraska claiming they're from the same deck, get two Jace back for four Jace total.

I don't think it would work this way, why are you sending in two Vraskas and expecting two Jaces? In a correct box you get one of each. WOTC would send back one of each. You come out ahead one Jace and give up one Vraska. I guess that's worth the hassle to some losers, but it still costs $40 for two boxes plus tax if applicable plus shipping to wotc plus waiting a month for the replacement product.

I hope wotc logs returns, like a lot of retail stores, and cuts off scammers who take advantage of their return policy.

Nowhere in the Arcana announcement says that both decks will be standard legal, or am I missing something? I am assuming the "event deck" will be, but that's not stated either.
I hope it's not just standard legal cards, as I love those sexy new frame reprints (like Regrowth, Swords to Plowshares and Memory Lapse) that usually show up in Duel Decks. Also, it's a nice opportunity to get premium versions of cards which never got any foil printing.

Aaoron Forsythe was asked on twitter "Will the decks be standard legal?" and he replied with "Yes." The person used the plural "decks" and I assume Aaron noticed, so it sounds like all the cards will be standard legal.

He was also asked if this was replacing Duel Decks and he said no, there will still be two DD sets every year.

Someone asked if alternating clash packs with event decks was a long-term plan or just to test the waters of their new product. Aaron replied, "Even if they turn out to be the best thing ever, they're too hard to construct to do every set."

  • posted a message on Announcing: Modern Event Deck
I've seen booster boxes for sale at my local Target and Walmart (at over twice the price of this Modern event deck) so it isn't the price that will keep it out of the big box stores. I think the size would be more of a problem, so it depends on the packaging. The normal event deck box would be simple for a thief of any skill level to pocket. Something the size of the Premium Deck Series boxes would be best for a $75 event deck. If you don't recall, the PDS decks were packaged in a rather large box, bigger than the Duel Decks, and the packaging was completely plastic, so they couldn't be easily torn open inside the store like cardboard intro decks. The PDS decks were also sold at Walmart/Target. (I'm not saying PDS were thief proof, but it seems to me they required more effort and risk to steal.)

Basically, if we see the packaging and it looks like all the other event decks, I'll be surprised if they show up outside game/comic shops. If they're in a bulky plastic box like PDS then Wizards is thinking beyond the LGS.

If someone has purchased the new turquoise dragon shields, could they possibly post pictures, or a very quick Youtube video review? I really want to see the new, flatter process because my main gripe with the product is the huge curvature in the sleeves. A huge thank you to anyone who can do this - none of my local shops have them yet and I was thinking of ordering some online, but I'd love a review first if possible.

I've attached two photos, if you have any questions feel free to ask. They are perfectly flat right out of the box, no bubbling, rippling, or curving at all. I'd like to know if this is a new manufacturing process for Dragonshields, because I hope they will all look like this in the future.

Alright so I just bought a box of the new Dragon Shield turquoise sleeves and they are awesome. What I noticed right away was that they were completely flat out of the box. I've had 3-4 other boxes of Dragon Shield sleeves in the past and they are very curved out of the box. These have the same texture of other Dragon Shields but totally flat which is the one thing about them that bothered me in the past. Anyone noticed the same thing?

Yes! I came to this thread to see if anyone was talking about the new Dragonshield turquoise sleeves, I was hoping I didn't get an abnormally awesome box. I'll buy more turquoise but I'm reluctant to buy other colors until word gets out the old stock is gone and they're all like this. I hope it's a new manufacturing process? The turquoise sleeves are definitely superior right out of the box compared to four boxes of DS sleeves I bought over the last 1-6 years. The box of blue Dragonshield sleeves I bought around a year ago was so messed up (scraggly edges, poor quality control), I'm still annoyed at myself for not returning it.

I also bought the new KMC hyer mattes everyone is praising and they are fantastic, I just wish they were a tiny bit taller like Dragonshields. They can't make everyone happy though, some people think DS are too tall and they prefer smaller sleeves.

As for this getting reprinted, how about no. They aren't putting it into a commander deck again to repeat the fiasco that is occurring right now (I have yet to see a sealed grixis commander deck at wal mart or target personally. Saw one marked up like crazy at the LGS but that is it.) Planechase or other casual product? Same scenario as commander. The only real outlet for a reprinting of this is as a judge promo. It sure as hell wouldn't be printed into standard if they won't reprint goyf and/or bob in standard. If they did a legacy masters they could do it there but they said they won't do legacy masters due to the reserved list (pretty stupid reason in all honestly, there is enough value in legacy to make a hypothetical legacy masters set the most insane set valuewise of all time.)

The big problem about Mind Seize/TNN availability, as we've heard over and over, is requiring shops to buy all five decks to sell the one deck their customers are asking for. As you pointed out they'd have the same problem with Planechase. Mark Rosewater has said they're concerned about the number of UPC codes for retailers to manage (one reason they cancelled tournament packs) so this policy likely won't change.

That isn't a problem with Duel Decks, two decks sold in one box, also sold at Target/Walmart, which helps with availability. Every box in a case has the same cards.

Maybe WOTC is already happy with DD sales and don't think TNN is a good fit, whatever. But this IS a way to get the card out to people who want it, so I won't believe their hands are tied and there's absolutely no place to put it that would make it more available and affordable.

TNN could be a Duels of the Planeswalkers promo like Scavenging Ooze (at one point only available in a Commander 2011 deck) but Duel Decks reach more people. I also think greed would cause a good number of those TNN promos to mysteriously find their way to eBay instead of being handed over in exchange for codes.

Gold borders are ugly, I think an alt back and cube set symbol would work for keeping the cards out of sanctioned tournaments so the gold border isn't necessary. Also, if they use the new card frame, it will be instantly obvious the pre-2014 cards are cube cards because they have the new card face.

I am cringing at all the suggestions for wotc to charge hundreds of dollars for official proxies. Yikes. New back, new set symbol, new card frame, black border, under $100. Please. Smile

I am looking for decent collection inventory program or website and ask your advice. I am currently using Decked Builder on my Mac and iPad, and while I like it, it doesn't seem to list promo cards or different versions of basic land, which I would like it to do.

I have been looking at tcgplayer.com or deckbox.org; anyone had any experience with these? How about other websites? Ideally it has to be something that works on my Mac as well as my iPad.

I noticed today the Decked Builder blog mentions this feature is a priority project:

For next year, our two major focuses will be (based on all the input we get from you guys):
    1. Improving the collections database (alternate art and promos)
    2. Adding Windows support
    http://www.deckedbuilder.com/blog.html

Make sure they know you also want to catalog basic land.

I think the Decked Builder card cam feature makes the app a must-have (it recognizes and catalogs cards instantly), but I don't have a ton of promos and alt art cards to track. And not everyone has a cam.

Try to find a website that exports to CSV files compatible with Decked Builder. I tried Essential Magic (because it was recommended at http://www.mtgo-stats.com/convert_coll/em) but Decked didn't like the headers in the CSV file. It's also possible I did something wrong. Anyway, that's something to experiment with if you'd like.

Unfold the paper mat inside the Hydra deck box. Set your iron on low with no steam. Iron the paper flat, roll it up. Take the roll to Staples or another office supply store that offers laminating services. They will laminate it for a few bucks. Ask if they offer various thicknesses of laminate and look at samples.

You might be able to skip the ironing step, I'd just do it as a precaution to make sure the creases were flat as possible before being fed into the machine.

I agree with Titus, if you're happy about it that's all that matters. I have most of those cards so I'd pass on the stack if it were offered to me for $50 but if I wanted those cards for decks I'd be happy with the purchase too. I like digging through boxes and finding cool old stuff like Natural Orders would be fun! Smile I have four in my legacy deck so I don't *need* more but you can bet I'd be happy to dig more out of an unsorted box.

Would he have sold you the Natural Orders for 30-50 cents each or would he have looked them up and offered 50% off eBay or whatever? I am guessing when he was presented with a stack of cards he decided not to look them up individually? They would have had more buyers show up if they didn't scare people off by saying cards would be sold as singles after looking up prices.

I'd go to check out the binders and poke through some boxes out of curiosity but only if I didn't have to drive more than 10 miles to get there. I'd travel a longer distance if they were selling u-sort cards at flat rate prices, like a set amount for any uncommon or any rare. By offering a % off they avoid sorting cards and still earn a good chunk of money for the hidden gems.

I also hope the checkout line isn't crazy long because there are a lot of buyers and they insist on looking up every single card. That could be a nightmare, but I'm imagining the worst case scenario. Maybe they'll offer bulk pricing on commons (older sets before Exodus complicates this of course).

I'm skeptical of their claim some binders haven't been looked at in 10 years, why wouldn't you as a seller be curious about binders that could be holding several $100+ cards? Binders are super easy to flip through. I'd pull the best cards to display at the sale in top loaders before the thieves have chance to palm them out of binder pages (or steal the entire binder). Maybe they're really lazy or don't care to learn the most valuable cards for a quick look through, that just seems weird to me.

If he handed you the card right now (either because he found it or replaced it) would you insist he also give you $35?

In your shoes I'd tell him to replace the card if he can't find it, so he'll have to trade for it or order it online if the LGS doesn't have it in stock. Then I'd chalk it up to a lesson learned. I once loaned a casual friend a pair of cleats and never saw them again, now I'm a lot more careful about loaning things out, and more proactive about getting stuff back.

For example, you just learned not to loan things to people that could easily disappear and avoid you if they owe you something. That's assuming you don't know where he lives. If you know where he lives then you could have gone to his place when you knew he was home and asked him to pay up when the card was worth $40+. I could have gone to my friend's house and asked for the cleats back (before we graduated and went off to college), and she probably would've dug them out of her closet or something, but I let it slide, so that's on me. Lesson learned!
