I think it's sort of hard to know who's at fault without knowing the exact disclaimer given about the deck, and the exact level of understanding/deck/skill possessed by the other players. Are we talking 75%? Are we talking precons? Are we talking draft chaff? Are they knowledgeable about the game or are they fairly new, or just casual-only? Did they understand that a quick win was likely/possible? My opinion would vary quite a bit depending on the specifics.
I will say: man, people can really get up in arms about rules. I've gotten in some pretty loud arguments over rules, and some people really refuse to back down up until they're proven wrong definitively (I usually try to make an effort to hedge my bets a little to avoid looking like too much of a jackass, although I'm very rarely wrong). It seems to be a strangely hot button topic for some people - although maybe that's the pot calling the kettle black. Anyway it's possible that the anger was over the rules and not necessarily about the actual game. No one wants to lose if they're sure the rules say they don't (even if they're wrong).

OneRingToGruulThemAll posted a message on 1-10 Deck Rating Scale? As someone who only brews for the topmost range of numbers, the contrast between one of my brews and the average deck is fairly stark. It's more of a bell curve; most decks are somewhere between 4 and 7.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
There really isn't much difference between a 1 and a 3; those decks are all bad and don't stand a chance at even a casual table. Think 99-card piles of commons, most unmodified precons, etc.
A 4 or a 5 has some modification (or is a Breya, Daretti, or Meren precon) and has some thought and synergy put into it, but is lacking a lot of pieces to function effectively.
A 6-7 is a consistent deck with decent card choices, but its curve will still be too high and its mana base will be shaky. It'll have synergies, maybe an awkward infinite combo, but it won't reliably be able to combo early.
An 8 is a tuned deck that's missing some (normally higher-end) enablers. Like imagine a tuned Breya deck but without Transmute Artifact, Imperial Seal, Mox Diamond, etc. It will also be missing a few cheap card selection or interaction spells and have a couple unnecessary clunkers, since that's where most EDH deckbuilders go wrong. An 8 will win/lock out the game on or shortly before turn 6 through disruption.
9 and 10 are very close in power level; these are optimized decks with few to no poor card choices. These will win on or before turn 5 every game even through a bit of disruption. Color identity (and the limitations provided thereby) is a major factor here, so is commander choice. A large percentage of commanders can't even be optimized to a 9. 10's normally use Tymna, Thrasios, Tasigur, Breya, Derevi, Zur, or Kess. -

It’s an incredible contrast going from this discussion forum to the decklist forum on an EDH site. In here, it’s about how to safeguard everyone else’s sensibilities, or how many activations of Doubling Cube you’ve achieved in a single turn. In there, it’s about whether Obliterate or Enter the Infinite is the better haymaker, or questions about what the route to victory could possibly be for a deck running 10-12 6-drop creatures if there is no combo. Some people will even do you the favor of having stuff like Brago stax in their signatures as they go on with the platitudes. Even on this page, the “top 50” list is populated with stuff like Death Cloud, Ad Nauseam, Contamination, and Yawgmoth’s Will. Oh, the pretzels people twist themselves into as they play this game.
I read a lot on this format (probably too much). I also spectate a lot and watch a lot of VOD’s. The contrast between what people preach and what they actually do is just staggering in every setting. I don’t think an opinion has ever been written on what you ought to do that didn’t eventually come around to non-combat and other abrupt win conditions being less wholesome. And at the same time, there seems to be no group ever where at least half the games didn’t end exactly that way – Purphorous, God of the Forge, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, so on.
