People who don't quite understand this stuff love to look at the EV to see whether a set is worth buying but EV alone is not a useful metric unless you're opening product up by the case. Anything less than that and you're at the whims of variance. The value is so top heavy that unless you get lucky and pull the handful of big money cards, you're losing out. It's a lottery set. Some boxes will be huge wins, while most will be big losses. You have to also look at how evenly the EV is distributed across the rares and mythics.

I don't know why anyone listens to Alpha Investments. The guy is a pundit, trying to cultivate a culture of rampant speculation that he can manipulate and make money off of. He's got a bunch of wannabe investor morons hanging off of his every word while he takes them all to the bank. It's pathetic.

...the players, speculators, collectors. Wizards has to tread carefully, you lose one of those and this game will die.

I wasn't goimg to post in this thread but then I read this. I completely disagree with you. Players keep the game going and make it fun. Collectors(wizards way of saying stores while making it sound like they are players) make sure cards are available and that we have a space to enjoy the game. Speculators are a cancer who add nothimg to the game and who only take money from players and collectors and put it in their own pocket while creating supply issues that reflect poorly on wizards. They add NOTHING to the community.

This notion that speculators and investors are somehow necessary to the game's survival is baffling to me. The MTG Finance pundit crew are pretty good at pushing this narrative and people just seem to accept it but it's a complete load of crap. The game survived for a long time without the rampant speculation we see now.

It's just that more thought needs to be put into what they print.

As far as environmental impact...cardboard is paper and thus biodegradable. The plastic wrapping could probably be recycled but I suppose they could try to switch to some sort of paper packaging, as well. I have no idea what that might do to the cost of the product, though.

Magic cards aren't just cardboard. Their exact card stock isn't publicly known but at bare minimum there's a semi-gloss coating, ink, and adhesive as well as cardboard. And that isn't even mentioning foil cards. I doubt they're biodegradable, they probably aren't even recyclable.

Stop saying the majority agrees with you unless you have a means of proving it, axman.

A quick google search would highlight that fact. But I'm not going to do your research for you.
There have been entire articles dedicated to the effect of chronicals.

It's also known as the Yugio effect.

You aren't doing research for them, you're doing it to back your own point. You don't get to just assert facts and then say "go do your own research" when asked to back them up. That's not how arguments work. If you want to prove your point, show your sources.

I can't even imagine how pathetic and insecure one must be to notice that there are too many lady pirates in the fantasy world where people ride dinosaurs and throw fireballs at each other and get mad about it because it's unrealistic. Seriously, **** right off.

I hope this set sells like complete ***** and it's the last "premium" reprint product they ever release. I would be fine with this set if it cost the same as every other set they release. It would actually probably be pretty fun and nostalgic to draft.

I would draft the ***** out of this set if it didn't cost three times as much as a normal one. Based on all of the other responses I think this is the point where people are finally fed up with "Masters" packs costing $10 for no good reason. Hopefully this will be the last one, and it's a shame that the 25th anniversary set is tainted by this needless corporate greed.

    Another disappointment.
One thing I'd like to know is whether Gavin or those guys actually pay money for their internal drafts or whether they get an allotment for R&D and they just draft to get a feel. Because right now, I don't really want to drop $45 CDN for a draft when I could use that $45 to get a card or two out of the set as singles.

Message to Gavin and others that work on this set: If I don't get $10 U.S. out of value per pack, I'm not opening the pack, period. Keep the EV high and my interest will remain high.

I was actually pretty proud of myself for this one

Yeah its hilarious that designers who have nothing to do with high-level decision making are going to be scapegoated by their corporate overlords who are the ones actually responsible for the state of Magic when this product fails

This actually makes our third rare from Apocalypse (Vindicate, Mystic Snake).

Apocalypse was a really popular set and they're all great cards (if not valuable) but geez. Spread the love around?

And none of the three have new art.

Of course they aren't, but as a longtime collector, it'd be nice to not be seeing signs of unbridled reprinting. If I'm acting entitled to express my wish for my "precious" collection to retain some value, I fail to see how the same cannot be said for players who want their hands on cheap staples.

Of course it's a gamble, I'm just saying that imo I see writing on the wall that mtg's peak financially speaking has come and gone. I don't own power at all, I have a few decent cards, that's it, but I don't moan for power reprints because I understand that if I want something valuable it might cost me alot

People who want reprints just want to be able to play a game, and are willing to compensate the company that produces the game a fair sum for the privilege.

You, and other "collectors" or "investors" who overemphasize the financial aspect of this card game, want the company that produces it to deprive itself potential revenue and deprive potential players access to a game, in order to inflate the value of cards you bought with the full knowledge that their prices can and do wildly fluctuate. Yeah, it's kind of frustrating to see your collection "lose value" but there are any number of reasons why that value could have disappeared in an instant regardless of reprints. Trying to keep the Magic bubble inflated is a fool's game that has been holding Wizards back for far too long and has caused Legacy to become a dead format.

As a long time collector, you must have seen your cards gain far more value than they're going to lose from any reprints. Do you ever think about that? Do you ever think about how much money you gained from these cards or do you just complain every time anything takes a hit?

i jsut don't get their choices for some cards

I'm actually curious and wondering how this set compares to eternal masters. In all honesty I think anyone else who pre-ordered is probably curled up in a fetal position in a corner of their room sending small prayers to the heavens that the remaining rares and uncommons save this set from oblivion.

You'd think people would learn, it happens every single time. Wizards reveals the most valuable cards first, everyone loses their mind, then the rest of the set gets revealed and it turns out it's mostly chaff. Anyone who is still preordering these things before the whole set is revealed deserves exactly what they get.

Another $1 card in $10 dollar packs. People (and shops) really need to stop buying into these sets. WotC needs to put in A LOT more value if they wanna charge 10 bucks a pack.

Or maybe they could just stop charging $10 a pack for no good reason.

Which card already has the released art?

No cards have this art yet, but it's really suspicious when leaks happen on cards that just happen to have art that is already publicly released. It makes it a lot more likely that these leaks are fake.

Man I really hope Cavern of Souls gets a reprint. It's one of the most played cards in Modern and Legacy and I can't afford the damn thing.

This set is SO scattershot (the nature of bringing together 25 years of sets), I can hardly imagine them putting a 'creature type matters' card in a set where there's little latitude to have tribal draft strategies. I wouldn't count on things like Cavern of Souls, Coat of Arms, Urza's Incubator and the like appearing here.

Eh mythics don't tend to matter all that much when it comes to balancing around draft synergies. I wouldn't count it out, but another mythic printing won't do much to help the price anyway so whooooooo caaaaaaaares

Oh good some exploitative pay-to-win mobile game nonsense with a Magic skin slapped on just what Magic needed

Hey, if it generates some money they can pour into the card game, why not? Also, it's basically advertisement in a popular medium.

What exactly makes you think money from this has even the slightest possibility of going to the card game? That's not how corporations work. They're leveraging the existing popularity of their brand to create a mobile game that is designed to generate profit for shareholders. Based on the previous work of the developer and mobile game trends in general, this game is likely going to exploit people psychologically and success will depend more on money/time spent than skill. Given how bloated and oversaturated the mobile game market is, I doubt many people will end up being exposed to Magic through this. It's more likely existing Magic fans will just have another outlet to give money to Hasbro.

Seriously, where does this "it's okay when companies do *****ty things because they can invest the money in the thing that I like" idea come from? No company ever does that.
