Yeah, I did get the feeling that this could be two PWs on one card. Still needs to explain how Liliana was able to break free of Bolas.

Twould be very interesting if Liliana's backstory as a healer was a setup for this set.

I find this interesting mainly from the small things.

First, the Planar Bridge seems to clearly show Amonkhet. (Obelisk clearly seen in background, sun, etc.) This would imply that the Planar Bridge is moving the Eternal Army to the location (almost certainly Ravnica).

Second, Liliana's posture is the most submissive we've ever seen her. The question of the Chain Veil is pretty important, but it has been made clear that Bolas doesn't really fear it. Whether this is because he is stronger, or because he believes that Liliana could/would not use it against him is unclear.

From this second point and other pieces of information, Jace and Bolas could have a Luke / Emperor conversation and it's totally accurate.

Jace: "Your (Bolas's) overconfidence is your weakness."
Bolas: "Your (Jace's) faith in your friends is yours."

And I'm not calling cliché so much as pointing out that this is truly placed along the epic path. Bolas is supremely confident that he can control the various pieces he has in place, and at this point it is overconfidence. Even Liliana, the piece he has 'greatest' control over, is controlled by an indirect method: her contract. In a deeper sense, by her own psychology. Should Liliana become more afraid of Bolas than her own mortality, she could strike a huge blow against Bolas by simply... breaking the contract.

Anyway, the third point is what's NOT shown: Tezzeret. He controls the Planar Bridge... why isn't he shown? This has a very Grima Wormtongue feel to it, and I could easily see Tezzeret turning on Bolas because he does not get pride of place over Liliana.

Really, though, the focus is likely Liliana. Someone as intelligent as her would immediately realize how she's been played. Not just with the contract itself, but in her actions. If she is as integral to Bolas's plans as I believe, then her use of the Chain Veil and hunting down her demons were... unnecessary. Bolas gains control of the contract if the demons die, and I do not believe that they would have to die at Liliana's hands for that to be true. This means that Bolas would have killed all four of them 'for' Liliana if necessary. Which makes all of her 'victories towards self-actualization' hollow if not false. She's been well and truly broken.

Are we sure that this is from War of the Spark and not Dominaria? I mean, the most important thing here is this is from WAR is not that Gideon is wielding the Blackblade but that Liliana is fighting alongside him. This would imply either that Gideon turns on the Gatewatch or that Liliana turns on Bolas.

The way you put 36 (37?) PWs in a set and not screw everything up is to make them all flipwalkers and only one can flip at a time (they hold the Spark).

While this is my own theory, I think I believe just '36 Legendary creatures' more because making 36 PWs for one set has got to burn through a LOT of design space.

The main mark against them being 'just' Legendary creatures is that the art is all art that can/should be put on PW cards.

It should be noted that the idea that Bolas is going to steal all of their sparks to try to become an Oldwalker again also explains the curious idea that Bolas himself notes at the end of Amonkhet: it was better for the Gatewatch to run and survive than to die. And that's likely due to wanting as many sparks as possible to increase the chances of becoming an oldwalker.

The two least likely PWs to show up in War of the Spark are Sorin and Elspeth.

Yeah, pretty sure that the chandelier is to represent the Sparks, and one remains, which is the one referenced in the set name.

Jiyor: That's a valid interpretation, but isn't it also valid to interpret that the smoke that is Bolas horns comes from the snuffed candles, and thus they represent Bolas?

Support for the legendary creature form of PWs increases.

Separately, I really do hope that they give us good-resolution images of each stained-glass window.

I think the main 'schtick' of War of the Spark is going to be similar to Worldsaverinc's idea.

All of the PWs will be Rare and be flipwalkers. (Except, likely, Bolas.) That is, they are all Legendary Creatures who can flip into Planeswalkers. Then, they all have the same Flip Condition: Control the Spark. (For this to work, it would have to be a single PW would flip. Not all you control.)

And then the marketing idea is to fix one of these (rare) flipwalkers in each pack. This would be a very high complexity set, but the only way to add more PWs than normal to a set/format is to ensure that they can't all be PWs at the same time.

This would be even more of a 'fixed Champions of Kamigawa' than Dominaria. Because, under this plan, you would have a LOT of Legendary creatures (and all the rares/mythics would be PWs). Additionally, you would have a 2-sided conflict raging in all of the colors. Current list of PWs likely to be on Ravnica for War of the Spark:

    Gideon
    Jace
    Teferi
    Chandra
    Ajani

    Karn
    Jaya
    Ugin

    Tamiyo
    Narset
    Saheeli Rai
    Huatli

    Sarkhan
    Vivien Reid

    Nissa
    Nahiri
    Samut
    Kiora
    Tibalt
    Dack Fayden
    Garruk

    Nicol Bolas
    Kaya
    Ral Zarek
    Vraska
    Domri Rade
    Tezzeret
    Dovin Baan
    Liliana

Note: I am not saying this is just a classification; I am not commenting on the ultimate alignment of any of these.

Listing all of them, that's currently 29 PWs. I'm sure I missed a couple. So the question is whether they add more or if there isn't a better way of handling what I'm suggesting

Can we give Skeletal Vampire a f**king break already? There is no demand for this card, and it's not evocative of the Orzhov Syndicate. Anyway, now that I've got that out of my system, these are some pretty solid lists.

That Ruric Thar, though!! Very badass.

To be fair, it is very clear that the Orzhov deck released has a very strong sac theme (basically an Aristocrat deck), and a creature that provides sac fodder, a free sac outlet, and a sac outlet that makes more sac fodder should be considered, no?

user: I disagree. This art is quite different, yes, but all other arts except her original one depict her with her walking cane and other stuff. If she were gesturing in this art with her cane instead of her hand, I would fully accept the art.

Teysa certainly looks different than her other renditions. Don't care, though, as my biggest concern was whether or not original Teysa would be the face card, or even in the deck. And she is. So I'm happy.

    Re: Bolas harvesting sparks

The art book mentions that Bolas is counting on the Gatewatch to show up....

Ah. If Bolas is indeed harvesting sparks, then what we're likely to get are Legendary creatures (i.e., non-walkers) of all the PWs. That WotC can do without screwing up balance, etc.

    So the idea is:

    1) Everyone arrives
    2) Bolas steals everyone's sparks (and holds them somewhere)
    3) Everyone attacks Bolas while he tries to make Oldspark.
    4) Everyone defeats Bolas before he gets Spark, and everyone gets their Spark back. Niv-Mizzet gains Bolas's spark.

This makes a lot of sense. It also explains why Bolas didn't want to kill the Gatewatch on Amonkhet, and also perhaps why he needs the Eternal army: to handle de-powered PWs. The plan (from a WotC 'how will it all work' perspective) hinges on the fact that post-Mending PWs gain very little from their Sparks, except the power to planeswalk.

Honestly, a timeshifted sheet of PWs for this set is just not in the cards, as planeswalkers. However, PWs themselves are not the only way to increase the as-fan of PW stuff in a set. In particular, they could create a timeshifted sheet of PWs and 'PW matters' cards. E.g., all of the Oaths would be on the sheet, as well as, say, PW deck cards from previous sets. (The ones that want a PW type, like 'Liliana'.) I really doubt that they would print that many PWs that it needs an entire sheet.

I could easily see every Mythic in the set being a PW, though.

Regardless of who may or may not die, I think there is a higher issue here.

Presumably, Bolas's plan boils down to:

    1) Create oldwalker spark.
    2) Get oldwalker spark.
    3) Profit.

Replace 'oldwalker spark' with 'very much more powerful spark' if you don't think that an oldwalker spark can or will be made.

Regardless, the best plan is to stop 1, because 1 stops 2. However, if that cannot be done, and the Gatewatch & Co. can only stop 2 (that is, the spark is created but Bolas doesn't get it)… what do you do with it? If anyone you give it to would become on par with an oldwalker in power, that's an awful amount of power.

That would lead to a huge MacGuffin to fight over.

Something else I've thought of is that we know one plane where PWs can die and at least 'stick around' if not keep their sparks: Theros, with Elspeth. Currently, my bet is that Liliana will indeed turn on Bolas at a key moment in the war, and Bolas sics the contract on her, which would presumably age her to her 'correct' age and (possibly) depower her somewhat. (We literally don't know everything involved in her contract.) Teferi intervenes and puts her in a slow-time bubble to prevent her death, and Gideon and Ajani (and possibly Teferi) bring her to Theros, where she descends into the Underworld. All of this may possibly be part of an effort to get back Elspeth or not.

Don't forget about what we have learned with Children of the Nameless - about the Entities and stuff. Bolas' plan might well be to collapse Ravnica - along with any planeswalkers trapped there by the Immortal Sun - and claim the resulting Entity for himself.

Um. I must have missed that. Where can I find this information?

And yeah, the Bridge is for the Eternals to get to Ravnica… but no one has really given a good explanation for why the Eternals are needed on Ravnica. Are they simply added insurance to keep the Ravnicans off of him? (Along with the 5 guilds he's suborned.) Another possibility is that Bolas knows that at a certain point all of his pawns are going to turn on him. Particularly if he's planning on collapsing Ravnica with all of his pawns on it, they're not going to take kindly to that. Another question is whether Tezzeret will allow himself to become trapped on Ravnica. (While we know that the Bridge can move the Immortal Sun, we don't know whether it can 'push' as well as 'pull' the Bridge.

Well, if this is the name of the set, I think we know what's going to happen.

Bolas has found a way to try to get his Oldwalker Spark back (likely, the 'Spark' the war is over), and everyone else is trying to stop him.

Don't say that. Do not say that because they would literally have no chance. Oldwalkers created planes and he would just Thanos them.

I think the point is that they need to stop him from succeeding... not stop Bolas after he's achieved his goal.
