Wild speculation time! The Block after BFZ will be set in Shandalar, the origin plane of the Onakke and the Chain Veil and will revolve around Lili, Ob Nixilis, Jace, Lili's demons and Bolas.

I wish we had this UR before the one from last week. That would have made the would-be-casual conversation between Lili and Jace so much more enjoyable and given the whole situation more suspense.
I actually like how we are kept nin the dark about the Raven Man, there are too few characters we don't know the "rules" about. It's soo narrowly defined now what a planeswalker can and can't do. A character we and the planeswalker don't understand is good. Keeps the mystery alive.

My first Commander was Zirilan of the Claw, an attempt to build the dragon portion of a Dragon vs. Knight duel deck into an EDH deck. I have since shied away from too many tutor effects and don't use tutors on a stick (like Zirilan), because it makes EDH games too repetitive imo. I was always searching up the same 5-6 dragons, which was unexciting. I'm now in the process of rebuilding it to an Intet, the Dreamer dragon tribal.

I'm most comfortable on my Sidisi, Brood Tyrant zombie swarm EDH, which suns sooo satisfyingly smooth, as well as Roon of the Hidden Realm. My most powerful deck is Prossh, Skyraider of Kher by a long shot, but it's sort of unbeatable in my local meta so I'm actually looking for ways to power it down (cut the Food Chain etc...)

What if it was something like, "At the beginning of your upkeep or when Azafir, Shadow of the Waste enters the battlefield, exile the top card of your library. Until end of turn, you may play that card. Instants and sorceries you cast from exile have deathtouch and lifelink."

OH I like this. This is not too strong for an agressively costed card and it has excellent synergy with reds new card draw through exile. Well done.
Chandra, Pyromaster, Outpost Siege with Scroll Rack or Sensei's Divining Top are Azafirs best friends now...

So now instead of stapling a 4 mana creature to Tamanoa, we're stapling a 4 mana enchantment to Tamanoa?

This is still immensely pushed. The change to instants and sorceries is plenty enough on a 3 mana creature. There's no way you can add card advantage to this and not have gone overboard unless it costs like 6.

I think you may have missed the part that only spells cast from exile get the Lifelink/deathtouch bonus. But yeah, he might still be undercosted.

I don' think Mishra needs another ability. Keep in mind, if everything you could want is on your commander, deckbuilding becomes less exciting.

Well, back in the day (you know, less than a year ago), it was actually fun to try to chase stuff down. I'm sure that you've experienced the decline of something fun as it descends into "Wait - why am I still doing this?" Some of us have been doing this for a long time - more than half my life, in my case - that it's hard to give it up. You've got a streak going. Surely, you think, it's easy enough to just push through the rough period, and it'll get better. It'll be fun again. And then I'll have been one of the ones who persevered. Quitters never win, right?

Let me know if any of that sounds like an addiction.

Yeah sorry my post sounded harsher than I meant. I like collecting stuff, so I can relate. My point weas that Wizards has no obligation to make magic easily collectible. But pissing of their most loyal customers isn't the way to go either, I admit Smile

So wearing my "I want to do super powerful stuff in Commander" hat, Azafir is easily the best-designed card in the thread. He does something cool and new and in my opinion, his rules text looks the most like the rules text of an actual card that could see print. It feels very Mardu (aside from the Archaeomancer ability), and I like that it adds a powerful control commander to a color identity that really lacks any kind of control archetype.

But from a power level perspective, Azafir is an insane value machine. If we look at his cost-to-abilities ratio, you're getting a massive discount on mana and cards. Comparing him to existing cards, he's Archaeomancer plus Tamanoa plus he grants deathtouch to all of your instants and sorceries, which even if you value that ability at zero mana (hint: it's worth more than zero mana.), is seven mana and two cards worth of abilities for three mana and one card that you have access to at all times from the command zone. He can turn combat into a complete nightmare with cards like Rain of Blades, Marrow Shards, and Scorching Winds with just a single mana available. I think without the Archaeomancer ability, he could reasonably be costed at five or six mana and still be quite powerful.

You are probably right. To be honest, I have no personal interest in Azafir being low costed other than deebeegee originally asking for an agressively costed burn Commander in Mardu colors. I like the simplicity of the second ability and how much it affects how you play certain spells. The Archaeomancer ability is there so that he does not just feel like an enchantment with legs. I don't like creature with nothing but static abilities... so I'd rather he had a higher cost than get rid of his ETB trigger. Alternatively, you could do something completely different, like "RR,t: Exile the top card of your library. If the exiled card is an instant or sorcery card, you may cast it until end of turn." which probably is a little fairer and feels more red.

How exactly are people complaining about Wizards making it harder to satisfy their self-imposed obligation to collect everything magic related? I'm not too happy to sse the seeded boosters go (I love factions), but the promo thing is a good change.

Azafir is super pushed. I like him even if I'm pretty sure there's some weird rules reason why instants and sorceries can't be granted deathtouch. He's a pretty sweet card advantage engine that could also support a reanimator or RWB blink strategy. He's targetable by both Sun Titan and Reveillark. He's also recursion for Yawgmoth's Will. That said, he's probably too good at RWB because of the interaction between him and cards like Electrickery. There are a number of very cheap red cards that would turn into Plague Wind + lifegain with Azafir hanging around, and you really don't want 1-sided board wipes flying around at two and three mana.

Well, I guess he could cost 1WBR. I don't think he's too pushes though. Tamanoa and Soulfire Grandmaster exist and are far from broken in EDH. The deathtouch is strong, and I admit that Electrickery is quite the blowout with Azafir, but most burn spells are single target (or can be split to a small amount of targets) or target every creature, including yours (and, more importantly, including Azafir as well). So he would probably die a lot. Thats why I gave him an ETB ability, so it's not a feel-bad moment when you wrath the board.

As for the deathtouch ruling, from the comprehensive rules:

    702.2. Deathtouch
702.2a. Deathtouch is a static ability.
702.2b. Any nonzero amount of combat damage assigned to a creature by a source with deathtouch is considered to be lethal damage, regardless of that creature’s toughness. See rules 510.1c-d.
702.2c. A creature with toughness greater than 0 that’s been dealt damage by a source with deathtouch since the last time state-based actions were checked is destroyed as a state-based action. See rule 704.
702.2d. The deathtouch rules function no matter what zone an object with deathtouch deals damage from.
702.2e. If an object changes zones before an effect causes it to deal damage, its last known information is used to determine whether it had deathtouch.
702.2f. Multiple instances of deathtouch on the same object are redundant.

As you can see, it does not state that only creatures can have deathtouch, instead it's worded very unspecific ("a source" in 702.2c.). Also 702.2d. allows deathtouch to work from any zone, including the stack, which is essential. I am not a judge, nor a rules genius, but I think this would work.

I have always wanted an aggressively costed WRB general that would enable burn as a strategy. Would end up being a spellslinger type card that rewarded you for playing cheap instants and sorceries, possibly with a life drain effect, or by spamming goblin arsonists or something similar. In the same way Talrand lets you go 12 cards deep into the pool of cantrips for blue, I would like something to enable burn in multiplayer EDH in that way. Any ideas creative folks?

I've made 5 legends myself that I'd LOVE to see. They're based on a project of mine and coincidentally they fulfill a few desires I (and many others) have in what they'd like in a card. I'd love some critique while we're at it.

You asked for feedback, here you go. Keep in mind, all said is subjective and debatable.

Mikael: Personally I don't like green artifact matters stuff, however your green artifact interaction is on color pie. I have to admit that I'm not really a fan of the "give it one of every color" multicolor card design, but I guess it fits the tinkering flavor. The powerlevel is ok I guess. To me this is... unexciting? No offense.

Cauri: Awesome Name. I like the enchantress theme. I tend to avoid tutor effects on commanders (or any tutor on a stick), because it makes games repetitive imo. The wording on the second ability is way off, but if I understood it correctly, it has potential. My bash at the wording would be "You may play enchantment cards from your hand as though they were Aura spells with "Enchant creature with converted mana cost equal to this spell - You control enchanted creature." This way, the Control Magic effect stays even if Cauri leaves the Battlefield. Maybe thats too strong though, I'm not sure.

Ravira: This one has me confused. What exactly is this card trying to do? The colors and the first ability lean towards an instant/sorcery spellslinging deck, but you would also need a huge part of your deck committed to token creation to keep it alive. Also, why is it so big? To mje, thats really out of flavor for a spellslinging wizard creature. Its hard to assess powerlevel without playtestuing, but my guess is this is very underpowered, or rather its a huge pain to maintain.

Mephala: I dig it. I think library matters is a good fit for these colors (see my card design on previous page). Unfortunately, I think this is overpowered. 4 mana for a 4/5 is already above the curve (even though its very color intensive), and you get FIVE(!!!) abilities on top of that. I think it would be just fine as a 2/2, thats still a 5 turn clock with a creature on top of your library. The ramp this provides seems very strong as well (given that usually more that a third of your library is lands) Also, it has two top-of-library manipulation abilities (sfuffle and draw), which is crazy. I would drop the shuffle ability. There are tons of shuffle ewffects and its a nice deckbuilding aspect if you don't get everything on your commander from the get go. Finally I can play y Madblind Mountain.

Primax: I love this one. Design, Flavor, Powerlevel all feel like homeruns. Nice job! If this was real, it would probably be the head of my dragon tribal EDH. Nitpicking: I don't like the "Progress' Bane" part of the name, too similar to the actual Bane of Progress.

Sidenote: It feels like you did the templating in a rush, some wording is off and there are some typos and missing/redundant punctuation.

This isn't news, but I love the communities attempts to make 4 color happen. Lef has a pretty cool project running over in this thread. Check it out.

Hope this feedback is useful. Keep the cards coming. Cheers.

  • posted a message on 15 New cards for a Commander product
First off, congratulations. I think you really did it and managed to give a 4C combination a unique feel and cohesion, and you didn't design strictly "not-blue". I like how lands are treated as a resource, which has a very primordial and mighty feel to it. Well done.

Alert: Wall of text incoming. Please keep in mind that all said here is my opinion and is very much disputable. I hope you appreciate extensive feedback.

Concerning the individual 15 new cards:
    • Hesed is pure gold mechanically, but I don't like the name, nor it's creature type (I wont touch that discussion though). I think the activated ability may be a tad too powerful, maybe reduce it to two lands or include some life loss on activation?
    • Krometh has two X's in its rules text that refer to different things (mana spend for X casting cost and its power). Although they are generally the same, this becomes very confusing with effects that change power. You could fix this with a kicker cost (like Joraga Warcaller), but that is very out of line for a hydra and I see why you would not want that. Also, the 4 colors feel like a stretch. This could be a R/G card without breaking the color pie. Maybe you could have it grant something else than Menace (which is primary red) that feels more white or black.
    • Earthmother's Mandate (the card has a typo, missing the "r" in earth) is very neat, but confusing rules-wise. whose choice resolves first? Does this go to the stack as a single effect or does each choice go to the stack individually? I like the general idea, but it seems like a can of worms at this stage.
    • Netzach, Harbinger of Glory has a neat design. Apart from the lifelink, it doesn't white though, and even with lifelink this could easily be a R/B card. The Lifelink seems very tacked on. Mid-post Edit: Just realized the interaction between lifelink and Netzach's last ability. Great card. Still don't like that creature type.
    • Suphlatus, the Vengeful Earth is very unelegant imho. A creature giving lands the ability to have said creature deal damage? thats very, very clunky. Why not: "Scarifice an untapped land you control: ~ deals 5 damage to target creature"? Thats much more intuitive. Also, it's completly overpowered. 5 dmg seems very high for an effect thats on a stick and has a positive synergy on the card itself.
    • My suggestion would be: 1BRG as cost for a 0/4 with "Scarifice an untapped land you control: ~ deals damage EQUAL TO ITS POWER to target creature" and "Whernever a land card is put into YOUR graveyard from the battlefield or your hand, put a +1/+1 counter on ~". that would be some build up, still very powerfull, but not as devastating early game. This also makes self-mill less rediculous with this card. I have to admit, I could be wrong abbout the power level of your card (or my own suggestion for that matter), but yours seems way too strong on paper.
    • Oasis Drinker, hell yeah! I loooove it. I think for 7CMC this sweet wormy deserves trample. What a great card!
    • Chohkmah, the Knight of the Reliquary for all graveyards. Nice card, but not too exciting. This thing preys an all utility guys, which I like. Well balanced. However, I neither like the name nor the art for a W/R/G card.
    • Sylvan monk is great. Awesome flavor, awesome use of the suspend mechanic. Nitpicking: If it's name is monk, it should be a monk. That said, shaman would make a much better creature type for this one imo.
    • Essence Blast is a tad too powerful. for 4CMC this will be an easy 8-12 damage mid-to-late game, and thats a huge life swing (especially in 1v1). I think it's ok as a sorcery, but as an instant it should probably cost 3RW.
    • Emissary of Nature is dangerously powerful, but an awesome design overall. I don't know why, but it feels very legendary to me.
    • Nether Demon, who doesn't like a hasty flying 4/4 for 4?. It's powerful, it's flavorful. Also, Hellbent is a good choice for a mechanic in this deck.
    • Spiritual Retribution ... bleeh. I don't like mass discard or discard on a stick. Objectively, this is very good, it should probably cost 1WBB. Subjectively, this card can burn in hell Smile
    • Loam-Tiller is a card I'm unsure about. I think is has a powerlevel similar to Oracle of Mul Daya. Oracle is a 4CMC card and still one of the most powerful green spells in EDH. So yeah, I think Loam-Tiller is a little undercosted. Designwise, I like the cycle-of-life flavor in B/G cards and this one hits right home.
    • Commander's Ring is solid, a different spin on last years color-identity manarock. This one comes down a little earlier to help cast your 3C and 4C spells, which I like.
    • Basic Krosan is a terrible name on an otherwise great card. This will be strictly better than Myriad Landscape in most Multicolored decks, but its a very welcome budget alternative to fetches.

Concerning the set as a whole, I see some problems:

For a precon, your deck is very powerful. Not just "pretty good", it's bonkers good. If people were to play this against one of the other precons, it would be a very onesided slaughterfest. As unintuitive as it it sounds, I think you'll have to defang this a little bit to make it viable as a precon.

The reason your deck is so powerful is that it's stuffed and optimized. It already contains pretty much every card you might want to play in a deck with Hesed as the Commander. There is very little to do with the deck after you bought it. Half the deck is EDH staples, but simple cards with good synergy like Grisly Salvage or Faithless Looting are missing. The value of this deck is insane. It would either be busted expensive or the prices of many staples would plummet, which is something wizards tends to avoid. For someone like me, who likes deckbuilding, this feels like buying a set of Legos thats already assembled: nice to play with, but half the fun was taken away beforehand.

The decks optimization for Hesed results in there being very little support for Krometh. This dude plays well with tokens (and my boy Oasis Drinker too), but there is very little support for a "go wide" strategy. All precons until now contained three Commanders with different deckbuilding approaches which were all supported equally. If you are already cuttign down the potential commanders in your deck to two, you should at least have decent support for both of them.

As an afterthought, I would love to see you expand on the Madness and Hellbent cards. Why not include some of the originals like Call to the Netherworld. Nihilistic Glee would make a perfect fit as well.

I hope that wasn't too much. I really enjoyed the cards you made, although your deck itself could use some more work imo. Glad you shared this with us.

Thx for the card art and upgraded name, but you forgot the Scry ability Smile

I have to admit, I overread the scry in your original design, sorry =(

EDIT: I tried to add the scry ETB, but it wouldn't fint on the card. The complete rules text for it would be:

Serendus enters the battlefield with a number of madness counters on it equal to the number of times it's been cast from the command zone.
When Serendus enters the battlefield, scry X, where X is the number of madness counters on Serendus.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose life equal to the number of madness counters on Serendus.
Instant and sorceries you cast cost {1} less to cast for each madness counter on Serendus.

..which is a rediculous amount of text on a magic card. If I'm really honest, I like it more without the scry (feels stuffed) and I think it would be more balanced withou it (too much guaranteed combo potential). I really, really like the general idea however, hope they will print another round of "commander status matters" cards in future. This would make a great Grixis one.
