I beleive that a part of design is to take into account the different formats the expansion is supporting. How about triple-shardsOalara draft? Imagine having the choices you have to make when facing this card. Splashable? yes. Dies to the -1/-1 bug? no. Worse than some? yes. Better choice in a particular environment? yes. Sticking some random ability on the said creature adds to the board's complexity, which sometimes is a pain in the backside.
Magic is partly about bashing your head against the nearest wall because of the high level of possible complexity, and I enjoy is as much as the next guy, perhaps a bit more, but it also shines by the aforementioned complexity it derives from SIMPLE concepts.
Now, I'd want to ask how many vanilla creatures were printed in this set compared to the number of keyword-o-mania creatures and ability-crazy creatures?
That was just my opinion and you may disregard it...

I've been reading this whole thread and normally, if I find something funny alone, i'll won't laught loudly, but this is really tickling my funny bone (no pun intended).
What I find surprising is that nobody mentioned disciple of grace! (the Urza one)
Here are a couple of ideas to reply to the "linear" aspect of poison and its "meaninglessness":
Gosh it hurts in my tummy! 3GG
Enchantment
Players with 3 poison counters cannot block
Players with 6 poison counters cannot attack
Players with 9 poison counters cannot speak (you get my point)
Bad mushrooms 3B
Creature - Zombie plant
Defender
When ~ is dealt damage, put a poison counter on attacking player (you're doomed if it gets pinged while you attack)
Far-out, man... 1U
Instant
Counter target spell unless its controller pays 1 + 1 for each poison counter you have
Counter the next spell you play this turn unless you pay 2 for each poison counter you have
That "rule" or guideline about making different types of token with one card has already been broken, and I don't mean wurmcalling, since they're all wurms. I'm talking about One dozen eyes.
Gotcha!

Greetings to all intelligent life forms everywhere
and to everybody else, just bang the rocks together guys!
Oona, the faerie queen will obviously be represented in a card in Morningtide since today's ask a wizard practically confirmed this. Her time will come, but unless they plan on revisiting Lorwyn after Morningtide, she's in there!
Sure, not much of a rumor, since it's direct information from the guy himself, but I think that what he has done for 4 months running, without any of us knowing about it, may lead to new speculations about what Wizards of the Coast might be able to pull off.
Quick aside, I feel MC did a great job at defining a part of the game we all love. Vorthoses everywhere were gratefull i'm sure he began stirring the cauldron at Taste the Magic.
How about:
-Unfair or Unparalleled for a name?
-card info that has to be found "hidden" inside the picture
-a free artifact that does nothing but only can be sacrificed for no effect
-a planeswalker card with reflective image box
-a card that forces somebody to make a card stick on his forehead, like a kind of fading.... like ivory mask with fading...
-legendary creatures that parody the heirs in future sight, like the mentioned "squee's grandma"
-two cards that have to be balanced like a cardboard castle with a symmetrical effect if they fall
-a card that has to be drawn on to determine its color and type
Everybody goes with the logic which says: after artifacts and lands, it must be enchantments.... Why wouldn't it be... creatures? Magi being the pupils/students/descendants of famous creatures...?
Because they've said in "Ask Wizards" that they're going to try to push sphinxes as blue's trademark flying creature. Red has dragons, white has angels, black has demons (or vampires)...blue shall have sphinxes.
And green gets nothing.
What about wurms?
for that matter, green is supposed to be the muscle color, so would it make sense that the biggest creature around every plane should be of the same species? Then, green'd get gargadons as iconic creatures..
mesa likes!!!!
hell
big, mean, extremely big, really really mean, unstopable (apart from that saproling creation thinggy) and he can get bigger?! hahahahahahaha
i'd have said "Trick or threat"

Quite possibly for each color amongst permanents you control instead of number of swamps...
Cool art anyhow
