Been playing an Azami list for a few months now, albeit with some budget alternatives. But would say that C17 wasn't too impressing on the Wizarding front, then again I somewhat expected it.
For myself, I'm looking to at least include Path of Ancestry and am still considering Kindred Discovery. Discovery forms an interesting additional draw engine for when Azami gets removed too often, but the CMC is keeping me in doubt about the card.
Yeah, I still might try out Kindred Discovery because I believe you never know how good/bad a card is without playing it, but my hopes aren't high. Drawing cards is kind of our decks thing already and I think slots that this fits into are better used on powerful effects like Treachery or Time Warp for the same CMC.
Great to hear!
We have a couple of possible nice toys.
Galecaster Colossus: My opinion on this guy changes every day. One day I find him too expensive and clunky, the other day it seems like one of the best Wizards for my Azami-deck ever. Magus of the Mind: Another expensive Wizard in the deck. It has a great potential but I play too many counter spells for it. Kindred Discovery: great card-advantage and allows me to attack with Wizards while still drawing cards. But do we want that? Portal Mage: My personal favourite from the entire set. This is so much fun. Path of Ancestry should definitely be included. A free scry 1 nearly every turn seems too good to be true.
Obviously it will change depending on how you want the deck to play out, but I don't think ill be including Magus of the Mind or Kindred Discovery in my particular build. With the magus, usually when I'm casting 3+ spells in a given turn I tend to be winning the game and I also run a fair amount of permission in the deck. The enchantment is a better card in my opinion, but way better with a wizard commander other than Azami where the greatest strength of our deck is the fact that we draw so many cards. I may still test it, but I think it may be a bit redundant. I could definitely be wrong though.
Portal Mage seems more my style if I feel like adding more anti-aggro cards to the list. This might be a meta call. Blue gets so many fun toys that the cuts are getting harder and harder to make. This one will get testing for sure.
Galecaster Colossus would have been the most absurd card ever if we could bounce our own non-land permanents. Thank god they didn't release that upon the Commander world. He seems strong though, especially in a slower meta where people just want to populate a board and then alpha strike in the mid to late game. He's probably too slow for the way my group has been running for the last half a year. I'm also up in the air about this one.
Path of Ancestry makes me sad for entering the battlefield tapped, but free scry triggers are free scry triggers. Should see inclusions in quite a few tribal decks. I still hate slow lands with this deck though. UGGGGGGHHH!
I have been away dealing with a lot of personal issues like work and school for a while now, but I think my life is finally less hectic enough to come back to MTGS and play commander again
I'm free anytime to discuss Azami and her strategies now. I know I am very late getting back into this thread, but if you're still around and want to talk I'll be here now
Look for updates and revisions soon. As well as the Commander 2017 set review. I'm super excited to try out some new toys.
I've versed the Leovold menace a couple times, but not multiple in one game so far. He seems pretty good, but I don't think he's a bigger boogey man then any number of other commanders running around in the format. A few of them at the same time though sounds like a linear, "unfun" game to me. Hopefully you keep having some better games
I really want to be excited about Paradox Engine for my Azami, Lady of Scrolls deck, but I don't even mess with Intruder Alarm that much anymore and this seems very similar at least in that list. Still a super sweet card though. Can't wait to lose to some crazy combo shenanigans that involve this
Since your commander is essentially a tutor every turn I'm sure it can be relatively powerful. Have you read either of the two Arcum primers that are up? Might not be the exact same build you want, but they have a lot of other information regarding the commander specifically
I think most people can agree that Insurrection is the most powerful of Red's threaten effects and in a lot of matches becomes a 1 card "I win" play in the late game. Because of that it's the one that gets the most attention, but I also personally like Grab the Reins for it's versatility (doubles as removal).
I don't know if most of the others non-creature ones get played that much. At least Molten Primordial swings for 6 also.
Karador, Ghost Chieftain is super solid and is useful to pretty much any deck that runs a fairly large density of creatures. If it were me I would start there. Get those wolves back from the grave
Granted, she can only really kill creatures, but those are the most powerful cards in EDH generally anyways.
Au contraire Mr. Bear. She can also kill players, the most important targets in the game Breya is super sweet.
On another note, Trophy Mage is very cool. I think she may just be the most powerful one for the sole ability to grab any of the swords or Trinisphere if you're feeling spicy.
How are you feeling about Disallow? I for one am super excited to get to play Voidslime in mono blue
As someone who plays mono blue a lot with commanders like Azami and Aboshan, I consider Bribery as probably my most powerful spell even alongside things like Time Warp, Treachery, and Mana Drain. I can only imagine how dedicated the decks you're competing against must be to their themes and synergies that they still don't run a veritable mountain of viable Bribery targets. It's pretty impressive actually.
I still stand by what a lot of people have already gotten at though - go play to your meta. Whats the point of playing a great card if it never does anything great?
I'm going to be testing the crap out of Disallow. So happy to have another counterspell that gives me choices. Cryptic Command is so good for that exact reason. Cryptic is obviously much better than this since all Disallow can do is counter something on the stack, but the point is that the more situations one card can deal with by itself, the more valuable it is as an answer slot in many decks. I'm stoked about this one

1. Commander 2015 (Experience Counters)
2. Commander 2013 (2nd 3-colors)
3. Commander 2011 (Original 3-color)
4. Commander 2017 (Tribal)
5. Commander 2016 (Four-color)
6. Commander 2014 (Planeswalkers)
Even with my love of mono color decks, I agree with others that the planeswalker decks were probably the weakest in terms of excitement for me

Oh yes, yes he will. Can't wait to run Baral in my Azami, Lady of Scrolls list. He also makes things like Time Warp, Bribery, and Dig Through Time cheaper along with all of the permission in the deck. I'm so happy
For another card that lets you steal your opponents stuff, have you ever tried out Vedalken Shackles? It's kind of absurd for mono blue
Since your commander is essentially a tutor every turn I'm sure it can be relatively powerful. Have you read either of the two Arcum primers that are up? Might not be the exact same build you want, but they have a lot of other information regarding the commander specifically

I recommend Reiterate to combo with Mana Geyser for infinite mana as a combo kill. That's just my playstyle though
Sweet brew!
