Ashling deals damage the third time her ability resolves during a given turn. If, say, you put her ability into the stack four times in a row without passing priority, the third instance that resolves (which is the second one activated) will do the damage effect, and chances are Ashling won't be there anymore to receive the counter from the last resolving instance.

Note that she can deal more than 3 damage if you pumped her during previous turns without doing it three times within a turn.

You assume wrong. There once was a rule that said that, but it's been removed many years ago. Tapped blockers deal damage as normal.

Let's say you have a standard deck. You have 60 different sleeves. If you go to the judges with a deck that is unsleeved, shuffle it in front of them and put your cards in your sleeves face down, is that allowed?

That process couldn't logically be acceptable, because as soon as you'd start drawing cards, you could start identifying which card is in which sleeve, which is a bad thing(TM) even within one single game, say because your opponent could have you shuffle one the cards you saw into your deck or, more simply, because you could play a search effect, associate cards with sleeves, then know what is on top after you shuffle.

I thought combat didn't use the stack anymore? If the Royal Assassin is going to be dealt lethal damage during combat, then it stands to reason that once that damage is dealt its ability to destroy a tapped creature cannot be used.

What you say is true in regards to combat damage, but Camper11 never said he was talking about activating Royal Assassin after damage is assigned, nor did you seem to. You asked if he could be used as a blocker and then activated, and he indeed can. It's just that if he's going to die as a result of a damage, the last opportunity you have to activate him is in the declare blockers step, after blockers are declared, before damage is assigned and dealt in the combat damage step.

If I have a Mogg Fanatic out and my opponent attacks me with a Royal Assassin can I block the Assassin with the Fanatic (killing both) and then before the Fanatic dies, sacrifice it to use its triggered ability?

Not anymore. With the new M10 rules, you cannot put Mogg Fanatic's combat damage on the stack, and then sacrifice it to deal damage, say, to your opponent while still killing Royal Assassin. Combat damage no longer uses the stack. You either let your Fanatic kill the assassion with its combat damage, or you activate its ability (Mogg Fanatic's ability is activated, not triggered). Not both.

So, similarly, the Royal Assassin could not be used as a blocker and then used to destroy a tapped creature that just attacked?

You still can do that. You have an opportunity to play the Assassin's ability after blockers are declared, but before damage is dealt. Normally, the Assassin should still deal his combat damage too, because unlike Mogg Fanatic, when you activate the Assassin's ability, he doesn't get sacrificied, only tapped, which doesn't prevent its combat damage.

Yes, you can, because Rupture Spire's ability is a triggered one. It asks you to pay 1 after it enters the battlefield, and Reflecting Pool can indeed provide this generic mana then.

I'm way too late to the party to point out any references that haven't been mentionned by other posters, but I still had to post to say how cool the idea of a Metal-themed CI is for me. It's great to know that one of the CI authors is as much passionate as me about both Magic and its rules and the very best music style in the world ! We, sir, are kindred souls !

Jam HEAVY METAL IS THE LAW ! Jam

EDIT : Oh, I think I actually found one that wasn't mentionned... It just appeared so easy to spot that I assumed someone would have pointed it out before me.

As long as they have Lich's Mirror in play, they're effectively immortal.

Immortal being the name of a Death Metal band.

Queen is the nuts, and double banshee + double doom blade is crazy stuff.
But I would recommend never playing duress in limited - it's really really bad.

It depends... It's very playable and even truly good if your opponent has a lot of removal and non-creature bombs. Granted, for me, it will most often be a risky filler card (20th to 23rd card in a deck, but it may vary depending of what kind of build I have) or a very good sideboard card.

The problem is that you're reading the poorly templated decade-old printed text instead of the oracle text. Rofl

More seriously, the answer to your question is yes. The template with the column (":") used in the printed text was the old way of indicating an additional cost. If it was worded as you suggest, without a column anywhere and without the modern phrase "as an additionial cost", and with just two sentences describing two effects, the sacrifice would indeed happen on resolution.

Your friend is very wrong. Each player still assigns its own creatures' damage, unless the Banding ability is involved.

What happens under the new rules is that once he blocks your 4/4 with his two 3/3's, YOU choose in which order your 4/4 is gonna deal its damage to them. You have to assign lethal damage to the first blocker in line (its thoughness minus the amount of damage already marked on it) before assigning any damage to the second. The damage is then dealt immediatly (as opposed to going through the stack as it did under the old rules).

Barring any tricks, one of his 3/3 (the one you placed first in line) and your 4/4 die.

    Warp World

Player A reveals his cards, then Player B reveals his cards. All permanent cards revealed come into play enter the battlefield at the same time, except for enchantments that enter the battlefield after other permanents, so that auras have something to be attached to. Permanents such as Soul Warden that have triggered abilities which trigger upon seeing other permanents entering the battlefield see all those that enter at the same time as them.

The creature type chosen for Conspiracy does overwrite all other creature types.

Since I've learned via this thread that Hypergenesis does not but creatures into play simulatiously, why would neither trigger go on the stack? Why do neither Karrthus's have their triggers on the stack due to state based actions?

Also do I understand correctly that the targets for all the triggered abilities are declared when they are put on the stack, and not during the resoultion of the ability?

Hypergenesis does not put creatures into play simultaneously, but except for the purpose of one or some of those permanents having triggered abilities that trigger on seeing some other permanents coming into play, it's pretty much the same as if it did. Despite all my edits, my first answer still has a weakness : it should begin with the simple phrase "after Hypergenesis has finished resolving". Triggered abilities trigger during the resolution of the spell (that is, they see the event they look for happening), but they don't go into the stack before the spell finishes resolving. The legendary rule state-based action puts both Karrthus into graveyards before their triggered abilties and those of the other creatures are put into the stack, but as I said, they did trigger, and thus will go into the stack even though their sources are gone. You choose the target(s) of a triggered ability when it's put into the stack, yes.

  • posted a message on Hypergenesis question
State-based effectsactions remove the two Karrthus before any of you would get priority, and before triggered abilities go onto the stack. They all do go onto the stack, however, including those of both Karrthus which did trigger. The triggered abilities will remain under the control of their source permanent's owner no matter if that source changes controller or leaves play before they resolve. Triggered abilities are put into the stack in APNAP order, so you (assuming you're the active player) put all of yours first in the order you want, choosing your targets, then he puts all of his into the stack in the order he wants, choosing his targets. All of his abilities resolve, then all of yours resolve, the destruction/damage/life setting triggers resolving on the targets each of you chose for his own sources. You'll be the one to control the (remaining) dragon(s) after the dust settles, because your Karrthus trigger is the last to resolve.
