Despite my love affair with Faeries, I’ll be the first to admit that it’s more than refreshing to see Standard so wide open. Magic 2010 has shaken things up in this format more than any core set has in what seems like ever, and I for one am finally excited to play Standard again.

I'm going to do a mini-review of the Standard-playables in M10, despite lots of others doing so already. I trust that most of my readers read lots of other articles as well, and do so in order to gather differing opinions on cards. If that's true, then this article should be just as helpful as any.

It is not all that often that we, as a Magic-playing collective, embrace a single and universal concept. Sometimes, however, we find a piece of writing that hits the nail on the head and lends itself to the community as a single, unifying truth.

I had this past weekend off, so I decided to head over to my old apartment in Grand Rapids to support my roommate in his efforts to qualify for the MTGO Champs event, which could have potentially sent him to Worlds. He ended up, well, not getting there, but that's neither here nor there. Needless to say, there was a fair amount of Magic played that weekend, though nothing could top what we got ourselves into Sunday afternoon: Mirage Block Sealed.

With only two weeks before Magic 2010 is released, I think everyone is at least a little excited about what cards could make their way into the new breed of core set. Here's what I think would have the most positive (or at least interesting) impact on Standard.

Since I knew talking about M10 would take up a good deal of article space, I thought I'd spend the rest of the article talking about the most popular deck right now, BG Elves. Elves had a second coming in Standard recently because it's one of the few decks that can not only beat Faeries (the "best deck" once again), but also put up a solid fight against the rest of the metagame.

Going into this qualifying season, I wasn't sure what to expect. At the time, Standard looked boring and bland, and Alara Reborn didn't look as though it would be changing that. However, the metagame has shifted back and forth with a great deal of vigor, and keeping up with it has proven to be a challenge for even the best of the best. But now that the dust has settled from the back-to-back Grand Prix events, what's next for Standard?

A week ago, my friend Jon pitched the idea of maybe getting a car together to go to the PTQ in Kitchener, Ontario. Considering that I could not attend Grand Prix: Seattle due to budget restrictions, I gave the idea some thought...

Although I grew up in Flint, I recently moved to Grand Rapids to go to school. At the local shop in that area, there is a kid that always brought some kind of
Swans of Bryn Argoll deck to FNM. This was never that significant to me, but that all changed the night I decided to run the UR Swans control deck at FNM...

After playing in event after event, it becomes clearer and clearer each time that no matter how much you test and prepare, sometimes it's just not your day.

As I'm sure you all are well aware, the Regional Championships are this weekend. Just about every Constructed writer worth his salt has written a review this week about the current Standard format, complete with prime suggestions for decks to run at the event and the decks to beat. If you click on this article expecting something different, you'll probably be disappointed.

Every third set for the past couple of years have powerhouse cards to the Legacy format.
Alara Reborn is no different, naturally, as it has brought us another great blue (and green) card for Legacy:
Lorescale Coatl.

The Prerelease for Alara Reborn is over and the Release events are but days away. Most authors in the Magic community are busy shipping articles filled to the brim with review material concerning the new set, but I don't think that I want to add to the already-ridiculous numbers of such articles. Instead, I'm going to talk about that "sick" deck that I mentioned last week, because I'm pretty excited about it.

Alara Reborn has proven so far to be a very fascinating set. Shards of Alara and Conflux were both great sets, certainly, but they were both had a low density of playable cards. Conflux rumor season brought me very few "wow" moments, but I've had several with Alara Reborn. However, as much as I'd like to ramble on about the cards from the new set that I can't wait to get my hands on, I'm going to instead focus on only a few and what impact they will have. I'm talking, of course, about the red/black cards.

So, what do I have in store for my dear readers this week? Well, as the title of this article might suggest, I'm going to talk about the polar opposite of my beloved Faeries: Spectral Procession decks.
