Hey thanks for your responses so far. Hey sentiment, just a small mistake, the school offered me $33,000 each year, so my family will have to put up $22,000. My family makes $35,000 total a year. Also, practically all my credits are transferring, and I just finished my first year of college, so I'd be transferring in as a sophomore. Currently, I have nearly a year's worth of extra credits extra at Depauw (because of AP classes), if I transferred to Columbia, I'd be where everyone else is at, but not ahead (because Columbia won't accept most of my AP credits). Also, graduate school shouldn't cost me anything because I want to go into a PhD program and that's paid for by grants. My hopes are to attend Princeton University because they have a highly regarded ecology and evolution program. I kind of fear that this may be my only chance to go to an Ivy League or any school with a big name.
Hey sentiment could you please clarify about the me not appreciating the academic atmosphere of Greek life? Thanks lol.
Hey Snoopdogatog, there's actually a lot of "pre-meds and twits" that compete with me for bio classes. I feel like a lot of the bio classes (which are limited in number) are being taken up by pre-med students who are majoring in bio rather than students who are really passionate about biology. I actually want to do the galapagos trip, and I am in the school's science research fellows, so if I stay I'll be working on a project with professors throughout the year, and I'll be staying over the summer to do research (which sounds awful because it's this little town of 10,000 people in the middle of Indiana, and I'm from Hawaii). Hey the gulf one, are you talking about the Turks and Caicos Boston College School for Field studies thing?
I applied for Cornell too, but was rejected. I also intended to apply for Brown but didn't make the application date. That's the school that I would LOVE to go to. Dream school. The open curriculum sounds awesome, I'd be able to design a really cool environmental biology/anthropology/sociology/economics major.
The two things I'm afraid of most are being buried in debt (I've heard $66,000 is not that much, but I've never had much money in my life and it sounds huge), and what Snoopdogatog says, about professors not being interested in me, and me floundering and failing there because I won't be able to measure up.

    Hey guys,

I am currently a student at Depauw University in Indiana. It is a small college of only 2,500 students and very rural, oriented toward the Greek life, not much to do. I am not a big drinker/partying kid and with about 70% of kids on campus going Greek I did not feel like I really fit in. So thus, I applied for transfer admission to Columbia University and was accepted. The problem arises now that Columbia is offering me $33,000 and asking me to pay about $22,000 a year (my parents only make about $35,000). Although they normally cover full financial need for students, their policy is different for transfer students. Also, it seems like there will be some good things at Depauw I may be giving up if I go to Columbia. I've built up a good rapport with my professors at Depauw, especially a few biology ones (I'm a biology major, interested in ecology, evolutionary biology, and conservation), I've been accepted into the Science Research Fellows which helps professors do research, and I've been accepted to the Galapagos Island winter term trip. Depauw makes its students do three winter terms and you can travel abroad on them which is what I want to be doing. Also, I have enough credits to be able to do two semesters worth of study abroad, which is really good, and Depauw is also giving me a full ride (at Columbia, there are much more requirements to studying abroad, although if I work hard, I think I'll be able to qualify for a semester). Eventually, I want to go to a prestigious graduate school and earn a PhD. in ecology, evolution, and conservation. Columbia has greater prestige and I wonder if my chances of getting into a good graduate school would be better if I went there (I heard professors will give you a boost in graduate school admissions if you've done undergraduate research with them and they like you). It has a core program of Western humanities that take up approximately a third of the courses that I am not too eager to take (I am almost finished with my Depauw requirements) but it has a much more fantastic ecology, evolutionary, and conservation biology program than the simple biology program that Depauw offers. I'm having a really hard time deciding between the two, since my college and career counselor says since I'm doing well at Depauw, it might be better to be a big fish in a little pond rather than a small fish in a big pond. But I also feel like I want to take the Columbia opportunity because I'm a first generation college student and it seems like such a great opportunity and almost seems to be some value into going to the ivy leagues, but I'm worried about how it'll affect my chances of getting into graduate school, paying for it, and whether it'll be worth it overall.

Haha thanks for the tips everyone. For those who want to know, I am now in Greencastle, Indiana, which is 40 miles away from Indianapolis. I also need a pair of gloves and a scarf. Is wool a good choice or am I just asking to get shocked more?

Hey everyone, I'm originally from Hawaii and this is going to be my first winter in the mainland since I'm away for college. I need advice on what kind of jacket I should be buying. Down? Wool? Ski? I just want one good, nice looking jacket that I can put on that will be enough to withstand the snow without me having to layer. I've heard things such as down jackets cannot be washed and that the feathers come out and wool and polyester causes lots of static electricity (which I don't want since I've been getting shocked enough). Are ski jackets warm? I've been looking at a black tokidoki one from ride but it's quite expensive. By the way does anyone know any methods of not getting shocked by metal objects? It's causing me to fear touching them.

Why do you think they're so awful? I think they're an interesting addition because they increase the interactions between cards such as how bitterblossom is also a faerie card, which lets it be fetched by faerie harbinger, and count toward spellstutter sprite's ability.

I noticed on the new edition of Dragonstorm, the card says search your library for dragon permanents. That reminded me about the tribal supertype. However, I saw that on cards such as Form of the Dragon, they did not turn it into a "Tribal Enchantment-Dragon." Another card that might warrant this change is Day of the Dragon. Why do you think that R&D didn't change this? Other cards such as goblin grenade would also be great cards to give the tribal supertype to.

  • posted a message on Limu?
Well I'm from Hawaii and I've never heard any of this stuff. We eat limu sometimes, it's this brown, branching seaweed thing that's slightly crunchy that usually goes on poke (raw ahi (yellow fin tuna), but no one's ever said anything about miraculous health benefits.

I love the tap water in Hawaii! It doesn't have that heavy chlorinated taste of tap water elsewhere. Btw, how do you get rid of chlorine in water, since I'm going to the mainland for college, and I really can't stand the chlorine taste. I don't think I can use a dechlorination filter since I'm going to be living in a dorm situation.

  • posted a message on new laptop for college (limited options)
Can you guys please help me choose a new laptop for college? I don't know much about computers. I'm going to DePauw and they require that students buy a laptop from them which they narrow down to four options. The four options are the macbook, macbook pro, dell latitude d630, and the HP 2710P Tablet PC. The specifications are
    Macbook: 13 inch screen
    • 160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    • Apple Remote
    • Apple mini-DVI to VGA Adapter
    • Accessory kit
    • 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    • SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    • 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

      • Integrated Camera
      • 2GB RAM
      • 120GB Hard Drive
      • Integrated Bluetooth® 2.0 Wireless Technology

      • Modem
      • 6-cell (44 WHr) Lithium-Ion battery
      • Ultra-Slim Docking Base w/DVD+/-RW Optical Drive
      • A laptop comparison table is found on this page: http://www.depauw.edu/univ/laptop/purchasing.asp
The macbooks also require a depauw software bundle to be purchased for $199. The regular macbook also has a glossy screen instead of the antiglare the others have (not quite sure what this means), and is a consumer model (apparently the others are corporate which the site says Corporate class models are designed for more enhanced durability than consumer class models and have more standardized components with longer lifecyles that ensure consistent and easier repairs when needed. DePauw recommends the corporate class model for all students.) I want to use the laptop for general homework, surfing the web, chatting, and maaaaybe games. Should I be choosing based on how much RAM it has, and what other aspects do I need to look at? Thanks.

How about using the Midwest dialect, since it's known as American Standard English. For anyone who says why don't we use British English, I see that the OP's country of origin is the U.S., and so is concerned with his or her country's language, not the language of another country.

You're right Zith, genre is a difficult one, due to those French words. *sigh* If only William the Conqueror had lost. It seems you'd be quite against the idea of this for etymological purposes. My question is that since we already know the origins of most words, if we changed the English language, that wouldn't change our knowledge of where they came from right? What do you mean it gives us the ability to associate words?

When Einstein said that God doesn't play dice, wasn't he referring to the uncertainty of an electron's position as you know more about its speed and as you know more about it's position the less you know about its speed? Heisenberg uncertainty principle? They also have letters in which Einstein states that he is not a religious man in the theistic, Abrahamic God sense. http://www.slate.com/id/2193557/
In addition, although there are deeply religious scientists like Francis Collins, the majority of scientists do not express religious belief. For example a study in Nature by larson and Witham in 1998 shows that only about 7 percent of the members of the National Academy of sciences believe in a personal god.

Let me just remind everyone that just because something is improbable does not mean that it's impossible. There are many, many dice rolls that do not happen as you described them, and it's only a matter of time that something as rare as yours would come up.
