Adam is a contractor working on the team for a six-month term; this is a "guest spot," not a permanent change in authorship.

So, do we know wether this will sometimes be released in english?

We don't know yet. It depends on how the manga performs in Japan. But it's definitely a possibility, which is partly why it's not okay to post the pages.

Any word on whether we should expect to see Surrakar in any other settings, or are they looking to be a one-time deal?

Depends on how they're received and whether we visit a plane anytime soon that would make sense for them.

Surrakar are basically Zendikar's burly, amphibian sleestaks. They're just past the threshold of sentience.

I like having races of varying levels of sophistication and importance in a setting. Having all races be at the same level is kinda dull world-design-wise. However, gameplay forces sometimes change our intentions.

In Lorwyn/Shadowmoor, for example, the intention was for faeries, giants, and treefolk to have 1/3 the number of cards as the more prominent races like elves and goblins. But that didn't work out gameplay-wise, especially in draft and sealed-deck. So the number of cards per tribe was normalized, mostly, which in turn led to way more faeries than I really wanted in the setting. Ah well.

Unfortuantely, the creative team aren't idiots.

    This statement greatly confuses me.

I'm referring to the way that Ravnica, Lorwyn/Shadowmoor, Alara, and presumably Zendikar (Kamigawa, Mirrodin?) all have their crisis originating from the time rifts.

I see. I thought you meant "since Time Spiral." If that were your criterion, it's only Lorwyn, unless you count Bolas being involved as temporal-damage-related by proxy.

I'm enjoying this thread. Great to hear your solutions and alternatives.

Really, these people are one in a billion. And yet, they, especially the ones new to being walkers, seem to be bumping into each other left and right.

We think and talk about this a lot. I call it "small world syndrome." (Take Star Wars, for example, which starts off as a story about an oppressive galactic empire and the rebellion rising up against it, and ends up being a story about a guy, his sister, and his dad.) It's tricky -- if there's one story, well, your characters need to interrelate, and characters without enough of a role should be written out. On the other hand, if there are many discrete stories, you risk dividing your audience up among them so that none ever really takes hold.

This is sort of a primitive comparison, but think of all the Marvel titles taken together, each with its own protagonist, then think of the X-Men, for example. In the first example, the guy who just likes Iron Man can just read that book and doesn't have to bother with Wolverine, for example, except in the rare crossover. In the X-Men, though, you have a whole cast of interacting characters, some who cooperate, some who clash. Good characters get better when they have others to work with or against.

And by the way, I think you mean loner, not loaner. Grin

The past several blocks have all been vaguely related to the whole Timespiral thing, and it's becoming both a little bit of a crutch to plots and slowing things down to a crawl. Let's move on a little bit from the time rifts and move forward, please.

Can you explain what you mean? The only thing that relates to Time Spiral in any way is Bolas's motivation, right?

I [...] really want her to some time in the future because all of her stuff is good.

I figured that's what you meant. I just wanted to take the opportunity to remind everyone that it's very, very rare that the reason your favorite writer/artist/contributor isn't showing up as much as you'd like is because we're failing to offer them work. Much more often it's because they're too busy, or they're burned out, or they've "outgrown" us. And occasionally it's because although they do great work, they routinely blow deadlines, for example.

EDIT: Jenna is awesome and doesn't miss deadlines. The stuff above isn't about her situation specifically at all; I'm just generalizing about the "Why don't you give _______ more work?" question.

It's absolutely criminal that she hasn't been given the chance to write a Magic book yet.

It's absolutely false. Working a full-time day job and then writing a novel on your evenings and weekends isn't something everyone wants to do and/or is capable of.

BTW, Richard designed the character in the comic's last panel, who you'll be hearing more from.

it seems like they just used the Kor on a whim

No, Jeremy was just being a bit glib. We weren't 'out of ideas,' nor was it like "hell, why not?" Once the world's identity was in place -- its verticality, its weird mana, etc., the kor were a natural fit (I'm the one who pitched their inclusion in this world). You'll hear more about why later.
