Yeah, the fact that I wasn't a big fantasy guy for such a big proportion of my life is a big part of why Nascent is the way it is. Although I guess it does have the nice side effect of being appealing to non-fantasy people (though I'd never really considered that).

Aug 5, 2009Mercer posted a message on Why I Do ThisThanks, Edghy. As one of my first (and by far my most vocal) fans, that means so much that any attempt to enunciate it will just sound sarcastic in print. So I won't.Posted in: Listless Shuffling

If you have the opportunity and can accept that the ending is the quintessential your-mileage-may-vary moment, I'd still recommend watching it.
@Edghy: Yeah, I was pretty proud of that moment. Glad you approved of it. -
Apr 5, 2009Mercer posted a message on (spoilers) Thoughts on Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry PratchettI love Good Omens. Easily one of my favorite novels. The jokes-per-page... be they subtle, plot-driven bits of humor or overt jokes... just about hits saturation, and every single gag lands. Probably my favorite novel by either author (presuming that we're exluding the Sandman).Posted in: Machine Messiah Blog

Mar 18, 2009Mercer posted a message on The Cell Number@Edghy: I've been in your position. I maintained this weird friendship with my first girlfriend for years... well, no. That wouldn't be right. I maintained this bizarre, mutually parasitic relationship with this girl for years where she got to pretend I was fine just being a friend and I got to pretend she might come around (or had come around), both of us held in a perverse orbit around each other and both of us using each other blue (and not in the good way, like you want).Posted in: Small Utopia, where things happen
My suggestion (and, you know, I'm just gonna put it out there. If you like it, take it, if you don't, throw it right back): delete her number. I think you'll be surprised how easy it is to find someone else when your not tethered, however tenuously, to your previous someone.
@Mystic: If your ex is hanging around just so that you'll get back together with him, you should probably cut him off, or get him together with someone else. Take it from one who's been that guy, he's going to complicate things all over the place. -

Mar 10, 2009Mercer posted a message on Attention Wizards: Get rid of Mythic Rares IMMEDIATELY.Frankly, I like the Mythics, if only for the fact that they make cards like duals and such waaaaayyyy easier to get. And if one or another is tournament worthy? Who cares? The market saturation isn't bigger than, say, Tarmogoyf, so I can still buy the singles.Posted in: Surging Chaos's Realm of Ruination

See, kids? Sucking up does work.
Although, see, color is the ideology is the color. Has been since Alpha (though it was way more lax back then).
To my mind, people who gravitate towards certain philosphies gravitate towards certain colors, to the extent that if you believe enough in concepts such as freedom and the importance of action before thought, you may be completely unable to use white or blue magic at all.
If that's the case, it would unthinkable to have a mono-green villain come up with too complex a scheme; that's not what mono-green does. If he starts coming up with an intricate, multi-layered conspiracy involving careful politics and setups, he's necessarily sliding further into G/W or even G/U. None of which, IMO, keeps him from, I dunno, plotting the person-by-person assassination of a group trying to raze the biggest forest on the plane. But there's going to be necessary limits before he starts color sliding.
Take, for example, the Cult of Yore, so hinted at during Ravnica block and likely a very Green-skewed organization. Their goal is to return the plane to something like it was before urban sprawl took their universe over. Now, they would certainly see it as heroic, but the citizenry, not to mention the guilded, would certainly see this as villainous. They might even call it a thing like "evil," even though that's a completely loaded word and the Cult would never see it that way.
Nice find. I really like the composition of that cover (which, sadly, is about all you can make out. Damn you camera phones!! Be as good as dedicated digital cameras!!)
Noted, though I'd argue that black has the longer history, and villainy has splashed into most every color (except green, and I was a bit sad that the Cult of Yore concept wasn't expanded to make them the villains of Ravnica. Maybe next time. . .).
I've never understood this line of thinking. What constitutes a "traditional" feel for a game that, by definition, changes constantly? I mean, I guess I could consider Mirage or Visions traditional, as that's when I started and some of my fondest Magic memories are from that time period, but others' concept of traditional Magic goes back further than that, and for still others traditional Magic is Invasion.
I keep hearing this "traditional Magic" argument, but I don't get it. It's like trying to argue for breeding programs to restore the majestic red penguin. It doesn't exist. Except for Alpha, possibly, but I don't think that actually plays like anybody remembers it. . .
Also, tribal's been over since Shadowmoor came out. Neither Shadowmoor nor Eventide had tribal effects in.
ANYWHO, I'm all for Magic to "go big" for a block. The concept was touched upon briefly in Scourge and Saviors of Kamigawa, but I think the concept still has a lot of legs (and neither of the previous sets really explored the space properly, IMHO).
Question is, will Alara go that route? Hard to say, I think. The card names and relative size of the creatures wouldn't seem out of the ordinary in, I dunno, Time Spiral. I guess we'll just see.
