Pauper Review: Dominaria

The Limited Archetypes of Dominaria
  • posted a message on BG Super Mario
Lost Legacy seems like it might still be important against U/W. If they can't manage to counter it, naming Second Sun can be key. I feel like Journey to Eternity should have potential, but it could be hard playing around their instant speed stuff, and exile effects which blank it.

Duress is definitely a good choice. I would definitely agree with Beastling on Vraska's Conetempt since Teferi is going to be a threat all on his own if they manage to keep the board clear. Teferi and Second Sun seem like the main win cons we'd see in those decks. Probably also Gearhulk? Cast Down could be a good answer there, although Siding in a card that only works against one card in the deck seems iffy.

Has there ever been a better card name than Excavation Elephant? Grin

Sounds like a Mega Man villain.

The synergy of possible T1 Elf, T2 Rhonas, T3 Steel Leaf Champion, swing with Rhonas seems strong too.

Overall, pretty neat. I'm a little disappointed that I really can't see a Saproling/Thallid deck emerging from what's in the set.

Hahaha, is that sarcasm? Or are you speaking specifically to a particular format? I think the prevalence of the theme at common and uncommon with actually useful cards could make it a potential G/b draft archetype. If nothing else, Slimefoot and their thallid buds will inspire EDH decks without question, with the DOM offerings for the theme giving those decks a lot of framework to build off of.

What makes you think the Saproling theme won't make a splash?

Oh yeah, for sure in draft. I guess I'm just having trouble seeing an actual Saproling / Thallid tribe deck for constructed. Though I should probably also temper my expectations since it's rare for a tribal deck to be super competitive.

Oh that's totally fair. I don't know that I see a deck like that taking traditional competitive environments by storm, either.

Edit: I was hoping for something similar to original Thallids. Something to make a stream of tokens that isn't a 7 drop.

Tendershoot Dryad probably isn't going to make a splash or make this deck competitive, but I think it's a fair supplier of Saprolings. More vulnerable than Verdant Force, but cheaper and provides a big boost for the swarm rather quickly. Perhaps Gwb with Annointed Procession? I doubt that's enough to really make it in T2, but casual constructed is probably all over it.

Edit #2: I actually really do like Slimefoot conceptually. I was excited to see that ... it? ... was a member of the Weatherlight crew. Even kinda made me want to make a myconid character in Pathfinder or D&D.

It's fun, I enjoy the character design. Its card is good times.

TBH I forgot all about the Dryad. Definitely vulnernable, but interesting. I'm thinking Brawl might also be a place for saproling shenanigans.

Edit: I also have to wonder if we may get Thallids in the new Core set since they have the leeway to do a lot of reprints. I'd definitely love to play a half decent Thallid deck with Slimefoot and the new lord.

Oh my, those Last of Us saprolings are so amazing they make me wanna play standard

Ok, good. I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking Last of Us with all these fungal depictions. Especially the Fungal Infection art.

Wow. The Black Cleric token and the Stained Glass Knight are really cool tokens!

Also, is the dragon our second legendary token (after Nissa's elemental from Origins)?

Maybe not totally relevant, but Yargle, Glutton of Urborg can come down the turn after and untap this guy. Plus, they have silly names.

I kind of want to cast Yargle, Glutton of Urborg the turn after Traxos, Scourge of Kroog. It's a combo?

Not totally busted, but definitely interesting. It comes into play tapped (and likely you won't be following it with a historic spell unless you cast it after turn four) and has to share Standard with Abrade. The drawback is very real against R/x aggro. However, if not answered, in the right deck, this could obviously be quite the beating.

I can't believe it says indestructible. It's very powerful.

Well I think it needs that part otherwise you risk getting blown out by a board wipe. And then you got no Lands which is basically game over.

You still lose to Golden Demise, Yahenni's Expertise, or Soul-Scar Mage with Fiery Cannonade, and get wrecked by Vona's Hunger or Settle the Wreckage (if you don't have enough basics) in Standard. In Modern you can get wrecked by Bile Blight, Echoing Decay, Biting Rain, Black Sun's Zenith, Drown in Sorrow, Declaration in Stone, Descend Upon the Sinful, Eradicate, Final Judgment, Flaying Tendrils, Living End, Merciless Eviction, Sever the Bloodline, Infest, Languish, or Mutilate. These aren't even exhaustive lists. The point is that even with Indestructible, you can still get blown out pretty easily, with your lands all being 2/2's until your next turn. Some of these cards are Instants, too. This card could definitely be strong, but it has to be played carefully.

Don't forget Settle the Wreckage in Standard. Granted if enough basics are still in your library it could be less of a blowout, but it could also just be GG.

    I didn't. Look closer. ;p

Ah, sorry! Missed it while skimming Gaping

Are you guys sure the portal is not broken

Let me just leave this here

1: a land soul ring and mana crypt then the portal

2: cheat blightsteel colossus then cast lightning greaves then equip the boots to the colossus

    Then troll face activated

    (God tier hand though)

Though at that point it does effectively function as a second Quicksilver Amulet so I guess it very, very slightly increases your chance of starting with that hand if you run both?

Looks like a Battle Toad, swings like a Battle Toad, dies like a Battle Toad (that game was hard, ya'll).
