The End of an Era

Hey fellow folk! I've got a new video up on my channel with Tempest Djinn instead of Merrow Reejerey!! It was super fun. Some learning points though:

    -Don't overextend into Engineered Explosives.
-Pick your battles with Spell Pierce (especially against Storm)
-Hold onto Merfolk Trickster instead of treating them like Grizzly Bears when not useful at the moment.
-Flying in a Merfolk deck is pretty sweet!
-Use one or the other of Dismember/Gut Shot....but not both!

All matches are timestamped...my pick of all 10 matches is probably Match #2 in the first league against Hardened Scales Affinity. Honorable mention goes to the Mono-Red Steam Kin match-up, which was surprisingly fast!

    4-1 in the first league!

Please don't hesitate to follow me on Twitch, Twitter, and YouTube all @MoonTimeDweller. Thanks for the support folks!

Hey there fellow Modern Burn players! I've just started up a Discord for all Burn players throughout the vast MTG world of formats! Pauper, Legacy, Standard, MODERN, and even EDH as I remember a friend having a really fun Ashling, the Pilgrim deck haha!

Tell us your stories of success (or bad beats!), tell us what decklist you use, why, and how you came about playing certain cards.

Read about other decklists from other formats and possibly look at getting into them! Enjoy!

Hey there folks, I just started a Burn Discord channel and want to grow it as big as possible. I'm planning to involve all formats, even EDH if there is a good direct damage EDH deck haha! I know that Standard Mono-Red Aggro does have a good amount of burn spells in it and that most standard formats have a version Red heavy deck that is always at least competitive. I'm not as well versed in Standard Burn personally, but I feel I can at least hold a good conversation with Pauper, Legacy, and Modern. I hope y'all have a great rest of the week...thanks for the support!

Hey there folks! I'm a novice Twitch streamer, but a longtime Legacy Burn player and am going LIVE on Twitch tonight at 9pm EST. Please join me if you'd be so kind!

I just played in GP Richmond and went 4-3 after the 7th round, dropped, and enjoyed the rest of the weekend. 6-2 and better were the only ones making day two, so I was as satisfied as my record could allow me to be haha!

My only differences than normal Legacy Burn lists are 3x Flame Rift in the maindeck and 2x Skullcrack/Volcanic Fallout in the sideboard.

I like both of those options. I just think if you're more afraid of Thoughtseize and the like, Spell Pierce is better...but, if you're worried about being more aggressive or seeing Collected Company-based decks...Mistcaller is probably a good idea.

As for Merrow Reejerey, I think 4 of him is really good in most matches and should be considered part of 'stock' merfolk. When you have two paired with a stacked hand...Merfolk can be pretty much unstoppable outside of a Wrath of God-type effect.

Hey Cricket, I like your decklist...but, I'm a bit wary of Phantasmal Image at the moment. I've certainly gotten a 5-0 or two with it in the past, but I don't know if it's better than Merrow Reejerey outright. I like Reejerey as a 4-of my deck. Some people have been cutting Cursecatcher, but I think it's good in the right build around it. It's great against Thoughtseize-type cards and Living End among several other good uses. The only thing I don't dig about the sideboard is Deprive...but that's a personal thing again. I haven't enjoyed it whenever I played it and I felt like Spell Pierce in the main and/or having a more versatile Counterspell package would be better. Using things like Disdainful Stroke, Spell Snare, Negate, Unified Will, and Dispel.

As for newer counterspells, I played a league last night live on Twitch with Wizard's Retort and was very happy to see it every time I did. Sometimes, I found myself loathing my decisions whenever I drew Deprive. Retort was very strong in most instances and especially in Match 1 of the League. One more 8-Seas Twitch Stream...this one had a pretty terrible result, but taught me a lot about how healthy and fast Modern could be. I got 5 lords and 2 other critters (and a Mutavault) out by Turn 4 against Burn and it still wasn't enough to win. Incredible.

Yeah, I'm ok with Deprive now as of the stream I did last night. But, I still prefer a counter versatile counter package of more than four. I feel like you kinda need to have 3 or 4 Spell Pierce in the main to go with it.

I think Conclave would be good in a more aggro version with 8 one-drops. It lets you play it on turn two and three without much drawback and really not care about getting it late game...that's the way I see it at least.

Yeah, I feel like you have either go full 8-Seas or just keep the regular 4. I've always hated Faerie Conclave and Deprive, especially in the same 75. But, Deprive can be ok because it can take out anything. Conclave fits in a more aggressive build I think with at least 28 creatures to go with it. It's fantastic against control decks and other Wrath of God effects....but, that's about as far as it goes in my opinion.

I just think that Dismember, Gut Shot, and Echoing Truth can take out just about any flying creature I'd potentially want to block or possibly open the field for an alpha attack with Truth, or maybe even get the random win with the opponent at 1 life via Gut Shot.

Almost landed a 5-0 with 8-Seas Merfolk tonight...if only I had played Merfolk Trickster correctly in the 5th match against U/R Wizards, it would've been an easy 5-0. It's lessons like these that teach you things forever haha!

Here is my live stream with 8-Seas from tonight, some really good match-ups against Scapeshift, Grixis Control, 8-Whack, Bridge-Vine, and U/R Wizards.

I did a stream with this deck tonight on Twitch for anyone interested in seeing how it works. It did ok...2-3 in a league that could have easily been 3-2.

Basically, the matches where Spreading Seas is incredibly good...Sea's Claim makes it even better. Anything like Eldrazi, Abzan, Burn, Jund...it's very good and can be backbreaking in pairs or groups of three.

I just did a video with 8-Seas Merfolk a couple of days ago. Check it out if you'd like! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ql9rGTxaL1s

Rothgar13 inspired me to do a stream last night and bring back the UG list. I probably should have gotten in touch to get something closer to his list as it's got a lot more reps than mine did for sure. It did well anyway, 3-2. I did cut Merrow Reejerey even though it's one of my favorite cards in the deck and probably bonkers in the UG build. I just figured it would be easy to cut a lord to add a lord in the Merfolk Mistbinder.

Anyway, here is the video. Please like, share, comment, and/or subscribe to me on YouTube or Twitch for more content like this. Thank you for your time and support!
