Here we come, Not Dead After All is the Feign Death/Undying Malice of the set and should probably replace some copies of it in that BR Evoke deck in Modern.
You bet, it's not like Scam needed another redundancy for its stupid plays anyway...now even more disgusting since if you manage to kill Griefer Elemental after eating double Thoughtseize (without life loss because FU)in T1, it will flip you the bird one last time by pinging you for 1...fun. Outside of Scam decks, a nice common for Limited.
Eh, I wouldn't take this over Duress so why even mention Thoughtseize? You have to either tempo hit yourself by playing a 1-drop so you can play this in T2 and avoid the serious drawback or 2 for 1 yourself in T1. A pretty underwhelming card in Standard, to say nothing of other formats.
So Faerie Vandal is the biggest winner of the Standard extension so far, instead of rotating out it has found its ideal partner in vandalism. T2 Vandal, T3 drop this guy (and pray nobody eats a removal spell) and there you go. I doubt Dimir Faeries has much of a chance in the format, but it seems like a fun FNM deck at least.
Maybe they played too safe with the Viper adventure being a sorcery.
Yeah, that effect is pretty underwhelming, I doubt this card will see play as an Izzet card, Monored on the other hand will probably find uses for it, I'd be surprised if this doesn't see play in red decks.
I don't play Modern since it's become too expensive AND rotating (thank you Modern Horizons!) but I think this announcement is quite disappointing. I wasn't really expecting them to ban The One Ring since it's moving packs, but no action against those stupid pitch elementals? Really? is T1 double Thoughtseize (without losing life either because FU) or nuke your board and leave a serious beatstick behind for B a good play experience? Makes you wonder what kind busted crap they'll unleash on Modern with Modern Horizons III next year.
Ok, besides the insanely cool illustration and flavor text, Fiery Inscription is a pretty solid card, maybe one mana too much to see play in a Modern deck though, wish it had been on Standard (yes, I play Monored).
I wish they'd print Shire Terrace in Standard instead of a straight to Modern set. It's nowhere near as powerful as any rare land, but monocolored decks without very intensive color requirements may play a copy or two for a little deck thinning. Same with Cast into the Fire, though that one may still see play in Modern, depending on the meta it could replace Abrade, and the same would happen in Standard/Pioneer.
Ok, this can be insane in Limited where most of your deck should be creatures. At 5 MV seems too slow for Modern, too bad it's not Pioneer-legal, maybe Gruul decks could have found use for it.
Seems that way, though Monored can put serious pressure on Esper, Lithomantic Barrageis hell on Esper, on top of all of the other burn cards to keep their creatures in check except her, of course. I'm a bit worried about Atraxa being in the format, even if there's no Fable to dig for her anymore. I suspect one of those two may still get the boot in August. I wouldn't have banned Bankbuster, but Fable and Invoke Despair had reaally overstayed her welcome, so good on WOTC.
Heck, there was a Standard where Emrakul, the Aeons Torn was legal with all the crazy and possible way to cheat him out as fast and possible, and still wasn't banned. It was an era where even banning cards like Jace the Mind Sculptor was considered extreme and outrageous because "standard shouldn't ban cards." and those were effectively years where bans were extremely rare in that format.
I really miss those times.
I guess you were a Caw-Blade player then. According to WOTC the attendance drops seen in that period were almost as bad as when the Urza Block sh*tshow. Due to power creep and poor testing (T3feri, Veil of Summer, anyone?) banning cards in Standard is more necessary now than in the past, even though less bannings sounds better in a vacuum.
Fable is getting the boot and Standard will be better off without it, I'd also love to see Invoke Despair go since only counterspells or Surge of Salvation can save you from it so good luck if your not playing Blue or White.
Atraxa was also a stupid design choice, that card belongs in Commander, not in a format with 60-card decks and multiple copies of the stuff you'd like to fetch with Atraxa, including herself so even if you kill the first Atraxa you can bet there's another coming up right away.
I'd give Reckoner Bankbuster a pass though, any deck can play it but not every deck wants it, and it's slow enough to keep its power in check.
Sheoldred is a fricking pain in the ass to play against so maybe they'll give her the boot because of that, even if she can be dealt with in many ways across all colors.
I'm not so sure about banning Sheoldred, there's plenty of answers against her, basically any non-damage based removal and even Red can answer her using Rebel Salvo, she is however, extremely unfun to play against so the game may be better off without her.Cut Down is just a very good removal spell comparable to Fatal Push, which didn't break the format back then. Invoke Despair on the other hand is a bigger problem, the only way to prevent that card from wrecking you is play either Blue or White and pray you have a counterspell or a Surge of Salvation in hand. Reckoner Bankbuster is ubiquitous but it's mercifully slow at least, and it's worth mentioning that non-Rakdos decks may not even play it
This is fantastic board wipe protection for phyrexian tribal, if that's a thing that makes it into constructed. Feels like it fills the role Siege Veteran plays in soldiers.
Agreed, great way of thinking of it. It's too bad the first ability only works with other Phyrexians though - probably means that it won't see play outside of dedicated Phyrexian decks, though leaving behind a 3/3 for 2 is maybe almost good enough on its own.
Sweet art, too.
Yeah, even standing on its own this guy is a good answer for board wipes, and if you fire a wipe with a Crawling Chorus and this guy on the board, you'll be staring down at a free 5/5 soon enough. The manabase for an Abzan Toxic deck seems iffy, so we may see both Selesnya and Orzhov flavors of Phyrexian decks in the upcoming months, and also after rotation.
for 3 mana, chances you're actually casting something from the exiled cards with this isn't very real until super late game.
seems like most of the time you're just hoping for lands.
and in super late game you're most likely hiting sonmething without all that much excess damage to spare... so, yeah
if it was straight up 3 mana deal 5 damage, draw a card, it would be a lot better, I think.
Agree, this is why I'd rather take the instant-speed Rebel Salvo or the 2-mana Obliterating Bolt in Standard. If this card let you cast the card until the next turn it would have been a different story, but it's not too exciting as it stands, if you find yourself hitting a 2/2 with your 3-mana sorcery with mana to spare casting more stuff you're probably going to lose anyway.
Hi Thundering Raiju, start showing the ropes to this little lizard guy, he's going to take over after you rotate out. I'm really liking this spoiler season, Monored is already a decent choice in Standard, and it's already looking solid post-rotation. This guy could make some of the Red battles actually Constructed-worthy, no need to waste 4-5 damage on a battle instead of a player when you drop this bad boy.

Yeah, as soon as I saw them I thought "Damn, looks like Mucha...guess I'm getting those".
