Two Sphinxes from Esper, each of whom offered a gift to the humans and vedalken. Tameron offered the Marble Chalice in hopes those who drank from it would live long enough to decrypt the sphinxes' wisdom, while Gorael offered the Onyx Goblet in hopes the humans and vedalken would eventually destroy each other to acquire it, leaving Esper to her own kind.
Tameron, Marble Sphinx
Legendary Artifact Creature - Sphinx
Flying
When ~ enters the battlefield, you may search your library for an artifact card with converted mana cost 3 or less, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.
Whenever you gain life, you may pay . If you do, draw a card.

Gorael, Onyx Sphinx
Legendary Artifact Creature - Sphinx
Flying
When ~ enters the battlefield, you may search your library for an artifact card with converted mana cost 3 or greater, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.
Whenever an opponent loses life, you may pay . If you do, draw a card.

Obviously, these two designs want to parallel each other in a couple ways. First off, each one can tutor for an artifact card of a particular cmc range, and since their respective artifacts each have a cmc of 3, it makes sense to include 3 in those ranges. Since white favors small, cheap creatures, Tameron tutors 3 or less, while Gorael tutors for an artifact with cmc 3 or greater since most Esper Sphinxes have a cmc higher than 3. Second are their life gain/loss triggers, obviously designed to work with their respective gifts. Tameron lets you pay to draw a card whenever you gain life, while Gorael rewards you in a similar way for hurting your opponents. Thus the two Sphinxes each synergize with their gifts in a couple ways while being flexible enough that you can build around them with other cards as well.

mosskirin posted a message on Taskmage cycle: New purpose for obsolete cardsI really hate the idea of obsolete cards. I like for every card to have some hypothetical use, no matter how small. It's especially bad when cards reprinted a kazillion times are obseleted. With that in mind, I created this cycle as a way to give some purpose for commonly reprinted, obsoleted cards.Posted in: Custom Card Creation

I think the idea of "sideboard slots as a resource" is kinda interesting. At first these just fetched cards from outside the game, but then I changed it to cards in your graveyard too, so you only have to run one copy of the signature spell in your sideboard. I think these cards would be kind of interesting in Draft, too.
Another idea I had was choosing between 2-3 spells per creature. For example, the Black one could get Terror, Raise Dead, or Mind Rot. But that might be a bit too complex.
I made them all Mercenary Wizards, because that's what a Taskmage is...a wizard who just has one specialized skill, and does it for hire. Also it's a little bit of extra cross compatability with the equally janky Mercenary tribe from Masques Block.

Manite posted a message on Pirate's ChestPirate's Chest was inspired by Dragon's Hoard. Originally it was Dragon's Hoard for Pirates, but I felt I should be more creative. To start with, Pirate's Chest costs 1, ideal for the cheaper, more aggressive Pirate tribe. Secondly, it doesn't produce mana on its own, but can convert plunder counters into Treasure tokens. Thirdly, it lets you spend plunder counters to impulse draw.Posted in: Custom Card Creation
Pirate's Chest 1
Artifact
Whenever a Pirate enters the battlefield under your control, put a plunder counter on ~.
T, Remove a plunder counter from ~: Create a Treasure token. (It's an artifact with "T, Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color.)
T, Remove a plunder counter from ~: Exile the top card of your library. You may play it this turn. -

void_nothing posted a message on [Read This] An Update, and a CallSo MTGSalvation will not be closing in July as expected. I know the news of the closure is still fresh in everyone's minds and this development has only added to the confusion. It does not help matters that the staff had very short notice of the sale of the site as well. Still, I, as well as the entire site staff, wishes the new ownership well; MTGSalvation is as important to us as it is to the rest of the community and we hope for the forums to stay online.Posted in: Custom Card Creation
That being said: Once the new site - which I can now say is to be called MTGNexus - is up and running, I will no longer be involved in the Custom Card Creation community on MTGSalvation. MTGNexus is the project of almost all of the current MTGSalvation staff, all of whom I admire and trust, and it is my firm decision to start the custom card community that has been a key part of my life for nigh on fifteen years afresh in newer, hopefully even more fertile soil on a wholly independent site. All future custom card contests I run will take place on MTGNexus and very soon all of the custom card discussion I take part in will be there too.
Anyone who wishes to remain here and try and continue the amazing work that CCC has done on MTGS has all of my love and moral support. I want custom Magic to thrive everywhere, not just in the site that I happen to be active in. But it is my great hope that as many of you as possible will come with me to MTGNexus's Custom Card Creation subforum. It will not have the weight of 15 years of history, but I know that as long as it has you - hands-down my favorite people on the internet - it will have a very, very bright future.
Oh, and I think some of the tools that are planned for the new site are going to help, too. But that's a conversation for another time. -
