I'm not really convinced this is the best selection from my collection and was hoping for some opinion, obviously I could go and buy some new cards but I'd prefer to use what I have first.
So would any of the following be better options that I should switch in?
So I have been building a cube to use for a casual 5 Player multiplayer (star/FFA) format. I'm hoping by posting it here to get some feedback, even if it is some people simply drafting it a few times.
I am limited to what cards I actually own and not looking to spend a lot on cards if I can help it. The theme if it has one is a 'road down magics past' for fun casual multiplayer with friends who haven't played a great deal of magic.
As a completely casual player for nearly 20 years; (No tourneys, no trips to store to play, don't care about standard, legacy or modern) just a guy who has magic cards and plays with his friends over some drinks and snacks. I'd have to say the majority of my spending on cards is basically wait until a couple of sets have come out or a commander release. Check what has been released maybe buy a commander set maybe not. Note down a few cards I'd like that seem cool, if I can get them at a reasonable price buy some and probably add a couple of boosters for kicks.
With these cards I have collected over the years I have built a cube for my friends to play and its a lot of fun, occasionally breaking out a commander/edh session.
My opinion with today's magic:
The new mechanics are on the whole pretty cool and fun, although it would be nice if they released some sets where new mechanics were not introduced at all. I feel that the new commander products are especially guilty of this as that is not a place for new mechanics, it should be a place for theme and flavour to be the focus.
The artwork remains really good if a little too stream-lined today, some quirkiness here and there is always nice to look at.
The Masters series, Archenemeny and Conspiracy are completely irrelevant to me. The masters series are overpriced and frankly I'd rather see the core set return instead of this, I don't play Archenemey & Conspiracy much like some of the commander product is too obsessed with creating mechanics for a format which don't work elsewhere in magic, which is useless and a waste for me a casual player. Sovereign's Realm is a really cool card with nice artwork, but I can't use it outside of a draft.
The themes MtG are coming out with currently are really great. We as a group have liked the exploration of zendikar, the return to Ravinca, lovecraftian, invention, and egypt so I have no issue witht he theme.
Creatures dominating is becoming a little stale, fortunately I can alter my cube to combat that so not as much of an issue for us, but I could see it being a problem for others.
Just wanted to pop in and say as a first time buyer of sleeves despite having collecting magic for quite a long time I went for KMC Hyper Mat Black Sleeves after much consideration and I am very pleased with them
Started a new playgroup and they don't have any cards so needed a way to protect mine for a 5 player cube. I read through this thread and other sources, so if your not sure like I was I just want to add my voice in support of them.
For storage of the cube I got a a4 sized PU leather office storage box. Will get a photo for later.
What did you want to know about it?
If there are some cheap improvements I'd definitely be interested to hear them.
- Ball Lightning
- Dragon Egg
- Feldon of the Third Path
- Goblin Rabblemaster
- Guttersnipe
- Hellfire Mongrel
- Hurloon Shaman
- Kolaghan Forerunners
- Manic Vandal
- Viashino Sandstalker
- Wall of Lava

A few individual comments and questions
I'm mainly looking for thoughts on my cube mana base and suggestions for adding a few cards that could improve it?
Also any opinion on the blue section would be great.
Some cards are in for nostalgia they are highlighted.
You can just buy the 9th edition version for cheap if you really need it, art isn't as good though.

Anyway just my thoughts.
Art is nice, flavour is high but damn if it does next to nothing.
That should be faux leather. link: http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-pu-leather-a4-storage-box-brown/p1809226
Easily has room for a 560 card sleeved cube + land, tokens, boxes and spare sleeves. Interior is faux suede which is good too.

Next time you meet up everyone plays another persons deck for that evening. So he gets whatever you play maybe and someone else gets his control deck.
