So, I just ventured into my first night of MTGO Play Lobby, my collection is small so I joined the Just Starting lobby thinking there would be other players in my same situation. Sadly, all the 4 players I encountered had dual/fetch lands and rares/legendary creatures/spells. There was nothing just starting about their decks. I mean, I even missed a turn of playing a land because the interface is so new to me but those decks were ridiculous.
What is then the best lobby to go play for people just starting?
I have been looking at things to do with my 2 youngest boys (16 and 11) and after getting a builders toolkits (M15) and a big box of random cards from eBay we were able to make a deck, and then some, for each one of us.
We played our first FNM a couple of months ago and we discovered we had been playing the game almost completely wrong, lol. It was hilarious for the store owner - who was awesome and sat down with us and explain the basics of gameplay and deck building to all 3 of us!!! We were playing Modern.
Anyways, I mostly play mono black; my 16 y/o plays Black/White Warriors and my 11 y/o was playing a Mono Red Dragons deck. So my deck was doing pretty good - I went 3-1; 2-1 and 3-1 on my first 3 FNM and my 16 y/o went 1-2 in all of them. My 11 y/o however could not win. So I gave him my Mono Black and he went 1-2 the first time he used it. I played a couple of drafts and was able to build a black/white Ally deck and bought some singles to buff it up (Drana, Liberator when it was $5 - it's like $15 now).
We have been watching our 11 y/o and he mostly misses mechanics and card synergies. I was wondering if a mono red burn deck would be better for him. I have done some research and I can get him a mono rad burn deck for about $25 with a couple of Planeswalkers (one of the Chandra's) on eBay.
Do you think that would work better for him since it's more spells-direct damage oriented? He's a really smart kid but I don't want to put him in a place where he gets too frustrated and doesn't want to play the game anymore. My 16 y/o is really getting into it and this game is something we all look forward of doing Friday Nights, along with Burger before and Frozen Yogurt after.
I was playing standard.
I like the Pauper and Duels suggestions.

Thanks,
