Everyone part of the conversation has seen the latest spreadsheet pricing, right? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1c0hrOZZ_6Jr4yBZL0q7CXUdHVnFWTg8LVhCeLqV_2cs/edit#gid=0

This is exactly what most Modern/Legacy/Commander players have been clamoring for, prices slashed by 20-50% for format staples. Who cares if you can't afford a sealed box of UMA, when the cards you need to play the game haven't been this affordable in years?

I'm going to take the opportunity next month to open 2-3 boxes, stash the a case for the future, and finish up playsets of Modern/Legacy cards. I like that WotC is careful to curate their reprints to maintain value of staples. I played casually and at LGS from '99 until '10, taking a long break before getting back in late '16. I had gotten my life in order during that break, and now have the disposable income when I didn't before. I might not have bothered if my old binder of cards hadn't appreciated in value during the interim. Whatever WotC is doing, it's enough to keep me invested in their game.

I'm optimistic they will walk back the Themed Masters thing pretty quick, less than a year. They took only about 4 months before walking back the FNM promo/token thing IIRC.

Reality Smashing Jace will be real satisfying but on the other hand getting TKS and Endbringer bounced is by -1 is ridiculously bad for us. Jace definitely makes our control matchup worse.

Also if there's a bunch of fast aggro decks popping up to get under Jund and Jace decks, that's bad for us too.

They can even play around that by having 5 mana, a Path, and a fresh card to discard after Brainstorming.

I need someone to explain to me a Modern/metagame reason why some people are so upset about the JTMS unban. I hear that the M25 connection feels shady and I think most of us are open to some suspicious speculation about this. But I also see a lot of dissatisfaction based on JTMS's metagame positioning or prospects. This is what I don't understand. How are people so sure this card is dangerous or format-warping? Have you actually tested it? I don't think we have any clue what this card will do, which probably means it will be merely good like many other powerful Modern staples. So where is all this confident hate coming from?

My reasons for disagreeing with Jace unban:

    1. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Modern is the one format they've done right the last year and a half.

    2. In light of Standard's failures, Standard's rotation backtrack, the FNM promo backtrack, the card stock quality issue, and crappy PR response to the judge/harassment issues, I don't trust WotC's recent decision-making. They should play it more conservative in the grand scheme of the game as a whole.

    3. Lantern hasn't caused rounds/tournaments to drag longer, but guess what does? Brainstorm -> fetch -> rinse/repeat -> fateseal.

    4. The unbans will likely reduce deck diversity in Modern as midrange consolidates around the unbans. Mardu, Abzan, CoCo, EldraziTron, RG Eldrazi, and Shadow are all at risk. What do you get in return? A tier 1 Jund and U/X/x Control. Not a good trade-off if you care about diversity.

    5. People will lose value on their cards/decks from Point 4.

    5. This is a blatant cash grab with huge financial risk if they have to ban Jace again.

EDIT: Meant RG Eldrazi, not RG Tron.

How are you guys sideboarding against RG titanshift? Been struggling with this matchup a little bit lately.

This is a tough one, and it's a matchup in which whoever draws better typically has the edge. As far as sideboarding, I like Dispatch for Prime Time, and Spellskite is decent as a hedge against Valakut. I've tried Blood Moon multiple times in the matchup and have had mixed results... It will slow them down, but they will eventually hit something like Reclamation Sage, so you have to try and win quickly if you're on the Moon plan.

Those are just a few of my experiences. I'm also interested to see what others have to say about this matchup.

I disagree on bringing in Dispatch if it's TitanShift version, I'd bet you'd rather have Galvanic Blast for the majority of the time to race. Finks or Baloth might not matter either if you have a flyer-heavy draw, so I think Blast wins here too. Of course, Dispatch is necessary against the Breach version.

Good SB cards in some combination are Thoughtseize, Spell Pierce, and Blood Moon. Don't run out Blood Moon until the turn before they can combo. Make them spend the time to get/have the Rec Sage. Play at most 2 copies of Blood Moon, don't rely on it.

I don't think Spellskite is that good, since their best hate cards are Ancient Grudge and Anger of the Gods, which Spellskite doesn't adequately answer. Play Thoughtseize instead.

You are playing against a R/G Modern deck, so understand that you're not favored post-board and will lose depending on how many Grudges they have/draw. Maximize your best goldfish with the cheapest interaction available for the best chance to steal a game.

Eldrazi Tron is fine. Burn, Affinity, and TitanShift have good to great matchups, and they are all Tier 1 decks.

Get the foil stamp if given the option. Fakes are always getting better, why take the chance?

I'm fairly new to the deck (was on Titanshift for a while) so I'm unfamiliar with the sideboarding strategies. Based on the input I'm getting so far from you guys, it appears that cutting some numbers of TTB and SSG and leaving 1 or 2 copies is preferred against discard?

Also, fracturing gust is there because of my meta - I see lantern control and bogles and it's been proving very, very good. There's very little burn where I am that's why I avoid Chalice totally.

Any suggestions to improve the deck? Thinking of going up to 2 scapeshifts as a secondary wincon but not sure where to cut. I get hit by surgical extractions and crumble to dusts fairly often so I need a secondary wincon. Been considering worldspine wurm over scapeshift as well (since unlike Emrakul I can fetch it with pact).

    Thanks.

Yes, Simian Spirit Guide is bad against discard and control, and you don't have Chalice for free wins either. Don't be afraid to go down to 0, 1, or 2 copies for more relevant spells. I would recommend playing the 4th Farseek over the 4th SSG.

I think siding out 1 Breach is fine against discard, but would keep the 3rd in if possible. Discard will impact the number of lands you have in play to hardcast Titan, so Breach ends up functioning as a 1 mana cheat in addition to the normal combo. As long as you aren't flooding on multiple copies, Breach is still really good against discard.

Obviously, Breach is your strongest card against counters, so take out all copies of SSG before any Breaches if against control.

I don't see how playing 1 Gust will make a difference against Lantern. Why would they let you topdeck it or allow it to stay in your hand? If you need to hit multiple artifacts, why not more copies of Ancient Grudge?

Bogles is such an easy matchup if you go up to 4 Anger of the Gods.

Why not play Woodfall Primus? He's maindeckable because you can Pact for him; he will allow you to interact with artifacts, enchantments, and lands game 1; and still acts as an alternate win condition. You can also rebuy him by siding in Pulse of Murasa.

Pulse is another very flexible card. Against burn, you can side out a couple of Farseek so you can still ramp with fetches while gaining life. It's decent against discard, counters, and multiplies the number of answers like Primus and Reclamation Sage.

An alternate win condition fatty is better than the 2nd Scapeshift. The 2nd Scapeshift won't help you against Extraction or Crumble.

I haven't tried out Worldspine Wurm, but only because Primus does everything that I want.

Summoning Trap makes the deck too slow. The only reason to play Breach over Scapeshift is the extra turn afforded by SSG/Breach. Otherwise, Titan Shift has the advantage in consistency, fewer mulligans, and better ramp.

    @Utvara_Captain:

Woodfall Primus has been good. Modern is very diverse, so I didn't want to be caught without an answer to stuff like Blood Moon or Ensnaring Bridge maindeck. I used to run Reclamation Sage in that slot, but the Sage is a dead card if you don't have a target, whereas Primus is a valid threat. So sick with a Breach.

I've tried both 3 and 4 Valakuts, and you can make a valid case for both. I think the risk is worth it after playing more with the deck. Oftentimes, it doesn't matter. You can still sequence two CIPT lands first two turns and still Anger on turn 3, for example. But the times when you naturally draw 2 Valakuts in a slower game? It's devastating. Hardcasting a Titan with 4 mountains and 2 Valakuts is almost as good as the combo.

3 is good if you're splashing or want an extra fetch as additional green source. The latter was my best argument for running 3.
