Nice. I like to ask this kind of stuff because I believe even our opponents know that 6 mana + amulet equals hasty titan or titan + tolaria to get a pact, but on the rough situations people think in different ways, and that's when tight play is really rewarded. So I really like gathering as much information from experienced players and what their thought process was. Thank you for answering.
I agree with some things and disagree with other things, but I understand what you are saying. I'm currently playing 3 abrades on my sideboard, along with 1 EE (plus 1 EE maindeck) and 1 Firespout, but I'm not sure about the numbers. Sometimes we are facing spirits/humans with one or two 3 drops with another one or two 2 drops and a 1 drop and explosives looks awful in hand. And I totally agree with the 1/1 split between Relic and Tormod's Crypt. I still like Ruric Thar and Hornet Queen though, and currently dislike Obstinate Baloth. Tireless Tracker and Ramunap Excavator are also cards I need more reps with.
Really nice seeing amulet beat fast decks like kci and hardened scales! Did you not miss extra copies of Explosives? Also, may I ask who were the pros you guys played against?
First time posting here! I played Jund for the first time yesterday. I have already played Mardu and Traverse Shadow, but it was the premiere for actual Dark Confidants =)
It was a small 4-round tournament on my LGS. Not the best experience...
Round 2 - BR Hollow One - 0x2
G1: I was on the play and kept a hand with: O. Tomb, B. Cliffs, V. Catacombs, Goyf, Goyf, Trophy, LoTV, playing O. Tomb tapped on my first turn. Opponent cycled a Street Wraith into Faithless Looting into double Hollow One on his first turn. Nothing to worry. I played Cliffs and passed, planning to Trophy one of the Hollow Ones and having 4/5 goyfs to block. But before combat he played Burning Inquiry, removing Catacombs and two goyfs from my hand, and two bloodghasts from his... I tried to hold the game with Ooze + bolt, but that was not enough.
G2: 7 card hand with 5 lands. Mulled into a 6 card hand with Goyf and Anger of The Gods. Opponent had Flameblade Adept into pushing my goyf into double Hollow One + Gurmag Angler. It was definetely his night. On round 1 against affinity he had 3 Hollow Ones on Turn 1 on G1 and two on G2.
Round 3 - UW Control - 1x1
Some newish list with no Snapcaster Mages and 3 Rest in Peace maindeck.
G1: Long game. I kept 3 lands, bob, bob, Goyf and LoTV. He played RiP on turn 2, and I drew 2 of my next 5 draws were Oozes. I managed to stick a Bob on turn 3 that lasted for a couple of turns. He was able to estabilize the board with a Timely Reinforcements when he was at 4 life and I had an Ooze in play. The crucial moment was when I had a LTLH on 7 counters and went to combat before embleming. He bounced it back to my hand and tapped my ooze. I probably would have won if I had just -7ed her right away.
G2: Another long game. Once again he had RiP on turn 2 (my only discard spell was Brutality, and my choices were Path and Opt. Took Path to stick a Bob). He bouced a Kalitas back to my hand 2 or 3 times with Jace and Cryptic Command. We both had low life totals, he had 3 Reinforcements tokens and a Colomnade, and I had Kalitas + Ravine. We traded a few resources, mainly Planeswalkers, and a 9/9 Ravine ended up winning the game. But at this time there was only 1 minute left on the clock.
Round 4 - Affinity - 0x2
This guy is sort of a newcomer, he used to play magic years ago, and has been playing modern with us for six months or so.
G1: Mulled a 7-card 1 lander. 6 card hand also had only 1 land. I thought the scry would help me, but... I played IoK on turn 1 revealing Inkmoth Nexus, Spire of Industry, Arcbound Ravager x 2, Steel Overseer, Mox Opal and Cranial Plating. I chose plating. I drew my second land on turn 4, while he drew two more inkmoth nexi. When I was at 4 poison he sacrificed a bunch of stuff to ravager and tried to move the counters to one of the inkmoths during combat. I bolted it in response, but with 8 poison my only hope was Trophy or land into BBE into Trophy. My turn was land into BBE into... Ooze.
G2: Mulled a 7-card 1 lander. Mulled a 6-card 1 lander. Kept a 5-card 2-land + IoK + Brutality + Pulse, and scried IoK to the top. IoK on turn 1 revealed Inkmoth Nexus, Spire of Industry, Mox opal, Arcbound Ravager, Ornithopter, Vault Skirge and Whipflare(?). Discarded Ravager. He played spire, mox and ornithopter and said go, signaling spell pierce. I played IoK into the pierce, and on his turn he played Darksteel Citadel + Vault Skirge. On my turn, my hand was: Brutality, Pulse, BBE. I played Brutality discarding BBE to kill skirge and discard his whipflare (if I drew any bobs/oozes I would like them to stick, and I was not casting this BBE anytime soon). On his turn he played inkmoth and cranial plating. I drew Fulminator Mage. He drew Arcbound Ravager. I drew Ooze. He drew Overseer. I drew BBE and died to inkmoth and cranial plating with pulse and fulminator in hand.
TL;DR: 3 matches, 6 games - I saw a total of 0 fatal pushes, 0 abrupt decays, 0 K. Commands, 1 a. trophy, 1 pulse (uncastable). Probably not the best sample of playing Jund. The one "cool" match was against UW control, where BBEs and Raging Ravines really showed their power.
I play Knight of Autumn, but not main deck. It's flexible, but does not help with our going all in on combo gameplan. Maybe you could play it, but I still like Ooze as my one-of flex slot.
I've been working on a build with 4X Tidehollow Sculler in the maindeck, but have been struggling to make the mana work since needing B/W turn 2 and GGGX turn 3 for chord is a tall order, especially with Gavony Township in the mix. Sculler is just good against everything right now and I'm trying to figure out if this deck can be configured to support the casting cost.
I played with 4 scullers maindeck once. The only change in my manabase was including a blooming marsh. If you want to chord on turn 3, you probably have a mana dork in play, and that provides W (and maybe B) for the sculler. Or maybe you should try playing Kitesail Freebooter instead. I never tried these, but they seem like a nice (and less mana intensive) alternative.
What was your SB plan against KCI? I think the matchup should not be that difficult actually, between discard, removal, GY hate and Kambal the matchup feels okay to me.
KCI is actually a deck I still could not beat with Mardu. We do have discard, removal, GY hate and Kambal, but they have trawler/retriever/buried ruin to get back things we discarded. But both times I played against KCI the card that felt like the one that won the game was Inventors' Fair. My opponent was able to search for another KCI after I discarded the first one on G1 once, and also tutored Wurmcoil Engine on G2 more than once.
I'm gonna say some pretty heretical things, so please at least hear me out.
The deck has 2 major flaws:
1: Too many weak creatures
2: Mana flooding is very real.
I haven't been playing with coralhelm for a while. I basically play a straight "bant value" deck, or bant company, or whatever you wanna call it. The reason I chose bant over any devoted/vizier combo is exactly because I think this combination gives us the strongest creatures. Voice, Reliquary, Tracker, Courser, Ooze, Queller, Jace, Clique, Reflector Mage, E. Witness, all of those are good value guys. We have most of GW company's value, with counter backup from SB, Jace, Nissa and a little main deck disruption (queller, meddling mage).
Also, I play 22 lands/8 dorks, and I suffer more from mana screw than mana flood.
It's not my first deck choice, but I believe it's the best Collected Company deck out there (or maybe elves?). It's simply not the best time for CoCo decks.
I agree. It was the last card I chose, because I wanted a 3rd Marsh Flats but did not have one. I also already managed to get 2 Goblin Rabblemaster to put on my SB. Besides that, deck felt a blast to play. Really solid.
Played this deck for the first time yesterday on a small 3-round tournament at my LGS. I had to improvise a few cards, so that's the list I ended up registering:
Round 1 - UR Wizards - 2x1:
A guy around here owns basically every playable card in modern and likes to brew. That's what he played yesterday. The deck is based around 1 and 2 mana creatures and a few cheap spells. I ended up losing game 2 because I got stuck on two lands and did not draw any 1 mana cards, so I had to cast one spell per turn, and a Remand on my Liliana was enough to put me behind. Games 1 and 3 went as expected.
Round 2 - Gr Tron - 1x2:
This guy has the best draw skills ever.
G1: I was on the play. Turn 1 IoK and I saw something like: Urza's Mine, Chromatic sphere, Ugin, Oblivion Stone, Sylvan Scrying, Ancient Stirrings, Pyroclasm. Sphere out. His first and second turn draws were: Expedition Map and Urza's Tower. He -2'ed Ugin to exile a pyromancer and a token, and I double bolted his planeswalker. The issue was that he found Karn, which was a little annoying, and World Breaker, VERY annoying. I killed it twice, with Liliana and Terminate, and managed to stall the game a little bit, but ended up losing.
G2: Turn 1 IoK taking Nature's Claim. Turn 3 Blood Moon. Turn 4 Bedlam Reveler. And that was almost NOT enough. I drew 2 Thoughtseizes and 1 Lightning Bolt on the following turns to kill him in 4 turns.
G3: He mulled to 5, and played turn 1 urzaland #1, pass turn. Turn 2 draw, play nothing, pass turn. I kept my 7: 3 lands, Inquisition, Looting, Molten Rain and Surgical Extraction. I Iok'ed him on turn 1, his hand was O. Stone, Nature's Claim, Wurmcoil Engine and Chromatic Star. I chose the star. Then on turn 2 I played looting, drew a second Extraction and thought "i dont even need this, the first extraction will keep him off tron for the rest of the game. And I need instants and sorceries in my GY to fuel my reveler". I discarded surgical + l. souls and played seize choosing o. stone this time. Then he played another tron land and a relic of progenitus. On my turn, molten rain his land and extracted it on his draw step. Then I realized: both the lands he had in play were the same. He plays different arts on his Urza lands (God I hate Tron players). On the following turns he drew the second urza land, and stirrings for the third urza land and pyroclasmed away two pyromancers and played a Thragtusk. I molten rained his last tower, and drew and played two K. Commands on the next turns, shattering an O. stone, making him discard an ugin and returning both my pyromancers. So I played the first Pyromancer, the second K. Command gave me a token to block tusk for a turn. I was at 5 life, he was hellbent, and my hand was: pyromancer, pyromancer, reveler. I attacked him for 2 and played two pyromancers, so next turn I could play reveler and generate a bunch of tokens. He had 4 lands. Guess what? He draws ballista, kills both my untapped pyromancers and my life total as well.
Round 3 - Infect - 2x0
New guy, playing with a new deck on a really bad match up. Nothing to say.
Anyone know list Kelvin Chew is playing these days?
This is what he sent me after GP Sydney where his personal record was 6-1-1 but I believe his team failed to Day 2. He'd also mentioned he'd gone 6-2 in Kyoto prior but not sure if this is the exact same list.
Interesting list. Some points I'd like to discuss:
1) Jace started as a 3-of, now it's just a 1-of. I never liked too many Jaces/Nissas, it felt like we were going off our route too much.
2) I'm not sure I'm ok with 3 lands that only generate colorless (Ghost Quarter, Field of Ruin and Gavony Township). I would probably play one of the land destruction spells on the sideboard and exchange it with something like gavony township when bringing it in. We need so much colored mana to cast voice/reliquary/queller/Jace, and some hands can be very awkward with all 3 lands main deck.
3) Is Eternal Witness better than Courser of Kruphix right now? Besides the obvious interaction with Knight of The Reliquary and Tireless Tracker, Courser is a lifegain source, a nice blocker and card advantage source. I really like Eternal Witness as a card (used to play 4 when playing abzan company), but i can't see her beeing as useful here.
4) No Qasali Pridemage. I'm quite reluctant on not playing Qasali Pridemage. I have one over the second Meddling Mage, and the reasons are the same: Both of them can be grizzly bears sometimes, but they also can be useful.
I agree with some things and disagree with other things, but I understand what you are saying. I'm currently playing 3 abrades on my sideboard, along with 1 EE (plus 1 EE maindeck) and 1 Firespout, but I'm not sure about the numbers. All in all, congratz once again!
