So Vraska improved her ability and can now turn people into gold and jewels instead of just stone!
That, or she's got a lucrative business going of selling hyper-realistic, life-size sculptures.

My first thought was that she's helping herself to their loot, since, you know, they aren't going to spend it. But now that I have the image of her setting up shop, explaining why all her sculptures look terrified, that's all I'm going to think of when I see this card.

This guy and Mind Over Matter are best friends.

    (1) Tap Izzet Chemister to exile card in graveyard.
    (2) Discard card to Mind Over Matter in order to untap Izzet Chemister.
    (3) Tap Izzet Chemister to exile card you just discarded.
    (4) repeat steps 2 and 3 as many times as you have the resources.

Just make sure you have a card in hand and two mana left so you can untap and activate his last ability and play all those cards you just discarded and exiled.

Such an elegant combo. It's potentially powerful, yet is very fragile and requires effort and investment.

I like the way you think Dance
There's a pretty good chance I'll actually start playing Commander now: Kess Control is just my cup of tea. I'll definitely try playing this combo, too, and maybe go all in on Flashback.dec

    Quote from Duke Daemon »
Wait how is it they have decided not to have masterpieces in Ixalan when they only just got bad feedback about the Amonkhet ones.....when did they start working on ixalan? During the release of Amonkhet?

He said that, while they were making them, they didn't like how the Invocations didn't tie into Amonkhet as easily as the Expeditions and Inventions did. It's likely they either decided to scrap the idea of Masterpieces being in every block then or they started putting Ixalan Masterpieces together, planning to pull them, if they felt they should.
This is pretty telling: he said they won't be doing Masterpieces unless they were "memorable," and that they didn't like the Invocations because they didn't fit with Amonkhet very well, so the absence of Masterpieces in Ixalan makes it sound like there's no theme to the set that evokes obvious, memorable Masterpieces that would fit in the same way that the Expeditions and Inventions did (making everybody immediately say "I hope they do this, this, and this"). Then again, whenever I read into MaRo's words I tend to be wrong more often than I'm right lol

What will happend to the story with this new model? We will go to a world and, for instance, only be there for 1 set. How is that time enough to set up a story for the world and then resolve it at the same time?

Most likely simply "return" to a place we know anyway and battle something out.

You really dont need apokalyptic level of destruction in EVERY block , it gets old.

Simply building something in a set, by invetigating, or finding some powerful artifact can be totally enough to carry the story forward, without the need to have a defeated super villain "every time" , which is terrible boring.

I do feel any story needs some kind of conflict, otherwise what will your story be about? Happy people catching butterflies? Doesn´t have to be some big bad wolf but there must be a reason we go to a specific place.

Not every conflict is Man vs Man. They could go to investigate a plane that's behaving erratically, with the cause being as simple as the inhabitants accidentally messing it up. You don't -need- some nefarious evil-doer to be behind everything. I think my favorite of the newer stories has been SOI, because Nahiri wasn't some pure evil trying to destroy a world because it's fun, she wanted to hurt Sorin the same way that he had hurt her.

If you look at new art for Push long enough, you'll hear Blue Bird playing faintly in the background.

You mean Green Bird? :p I don't know about this "long enough" stuff, I heard the song the moment I saw the art lol
I really want a playset and the name of an artist who can alter it.

  • posted a message on Counterspells in ahmonket

prowling serpopard was spoiled some time ago. Many people including myself thought that this meant that good counterspells were returning to standard. A lot of people even thought that this card could mean a counterspell reprint.

I'd like an ounce or two of whatever those people were on. Let's make it two.

Additionally MaRo has confirmed that counterspell will not be getting a reprint in ahmonket

Source? I don't doubt you, I just want to see the question and his response. If someone asked "Is Counterspell going to be in Amonkhet?" and his reply was anything other than a few paragraphs of laughter followed by the poo emoji, I'll be genuinely surprised.

is this just WoTC hating on control?
is this for hour of devastation where we do get good counterspells?

Alright, all joking aside, the running theory is that Amonkhet will be crammed with goodies for Selesnya 'slingers, then Hour of Devastation will give Grixis the spotlight. I'm trying to stifle my cynicism long enough to buy into that, but we blue mages have been crippled so badly that I can't remember how to cast it.
As for Counterspell ever being printed in Standard again... I'll eat a copy of each unplayable counterspell from the two blocks prior if C-spell is ever printed in a Modern-legal set.
(Oh, who am I kidding? It'll happen eventually. Probably a set or two after they print a one-mana artifact with "This can't be countered. Spells you control can't be countered. Whenever an opponent casts a blue spell, you may slap them across the face. If you don't, they lose 3 life, then slap them across the face anyway.")

  • posted a message on Next setting after Amonkhet?
    From today's story:
I watched as Ajani stalked away from us, pulling his cloak closer and vanishing in a flash of light. My mind followed after him briefly as he disappeared from my reach, his thoughts fading within the impenetrable Blind Eternities. Behind me, Gideon cleared his throat, and I turned and gave him a quick nod. "We're in the clear."

"Let's move quickly then," Gideon replied. "And you're sure you know of the place we are to meet him after, Liliana?"

Liliana raised an eyebrow, a languid hand drifting up to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "My dear Gideon, I've traveled to countless worlds in the Multiverse in the centuries before you were born. I know many places, and I know the place Ajani spoke of especially well."

"We'll trust you to navigate, then. Both to Amonkhet and to our rendezvous after." Gideon flashed what I'm sure he intended as a warm smile at Liliana.

So the plane after Amonkhet is a place that is familiar to Lili and Ajani, but unfamiliar to Gideon, Jace, Chandra, and Nissa. That should narrow the possibilities down quite a bit.

  • posted a message on Return to Lorwyn?
You know, I opened this thread thinking it was completely unlikely; in my mind, the "any type of counter" cards in Aether Revolt are for Undying / Persistent mummies, or possibly Infectious Phyrexians, in Amonkhet. Then, as I hadn't yet returned to the game when they came out, I had to look up the mechanics for Lorwyn and Shadowmoor. To my surprise, I found that not only did it have Wither and Persist for the handful of "counters matter" cards, it also had Champion and Evoke: Revolt enablers.

I, for one, would love to take a trip to Lorwyn, if for no other reason than dealing with the Great Aurora will require a better story than "Gatewatch smash!" Or maybe we'd be better off not going back, so Wizards can't find a way to turn the Aurora into a punchable problem.

As soon as I saw him riding the horse from Refurbish, I thought to myself "it would be a flavor win if he reanimates, but at 3 cmc there's no wa- Oh."
Aether Revolt's looking like it's in serious contention for the title of best set for Modern, thanks to the titular mechanic. There's no way that R&D aren't intentionally pushing the mechanic with the format in mind.

Damn, I was certain it would be Planar Gateway. Oh well.
I thought it was a strictly worse Planar Portal for a second, glad to see they didn't take that route.

I think it's what is behind Tezzeret in Battle at the Bridge as well. It is a legendary artifact so it makes sense.

That'd mean that Bolas sent one of his minions to Kaladesh to destroy the portal for whatever reason. At least that's what Dark Intimations seems to be implying.

God, I hope not. I would literally give one of my legs to see the glory of Phyrexia brought to Ravnica.
Actually, I'd think it's more likely that Bolas had Tezz get the blueprints, before destroying it, so he can rebuild it later and control the only one.

Could just as likely be Pia's something
That would put it alphavetically before Pithing Needle at #44.

We're also missing #43, though, so I think that one's incredibly likely to be "Pia's Object."

#45 though, I'd bet is "Planar Object," since (I'm pretty sure) "planes" isn't an adjective. Could be "Planar Gateway" or something like that, there are tons of synonyms for "portal".

Is it just me, or are we missing two? Maybe they just aren't loading on the page for me, but I'm only seeing 22 cards, not 24.

    Edit: I'm not seeing 43 or 45.

    Daaaaaaamn
    I need those Shackles.
Seems like every single one is a staple in either a tier 1 or tier 2 deck in Modern, Legacy, or Vintage. IDK about EDH, but even the ones that aren't constructed staples are cards that you see in nearly every cube.
Extraplanar Lens is the only one that I wouldn't be thrilled to pull, all the other choices are phenomenal IMO.

That said I want to see cards that care about having energy or having a certain amount.

Like what? I think there's a good chance we get a card like:
    Control the Spice City
    Enchantment
(At a certain phase of your turn?) If you have 50 or more energy, you win the game.
