Is anyone but Rudy calling for there being an issue? Its 2 boxes for Rudy had the issue vs however many by this LGS without the issue.
I mean I dont care, because as you say the set itself was super blah. I'm still sour over them holding back the Dom spoilers...
I know someone personally who sells product that had 2 pairs of duplicate boxes in a case now. An LGS is highly unlikely to come forward and confirm this because they'd lose so much money. And trying to sue wizards they'd lose a ton of money as well.
Rudy just confirmed with his patreons that he has opened more boxes and they appeared to be normal boxes. So this problem might be a batching issue.
Hopefully this is the case. We'll have to see when more box opening vids are released to be sure and hopefully Rudy and others can confirm multiple boxes within the same case in a video.
I think probably WotC is putting ink in the cards now that are toxic when our skin touches the cards and this will eventually cause us all to die which will indeed kill the game. It makes sense when you think about it since the card quality just happened to change recently. Also we should all definitely sue WotC for poisoning us and for not reprinting the Reserved List. MTG Lion with lead us to victory.
That being said, the only reason I could see to run Praetor's Grasp in a deck like that would be as a "just in case" card to deal with a card that absolutely hoses your deck similarly to how Sadistic Sacrament and Jester's Cap can do the same. TBH though I think in any scenario you're better off running Cap as it can also take out an entire potential combo from someone's deck and getting a 1 for 1 with Grasp in EDH is significantly less effective than other formats since it's multiplayer. Not to mention that 1 for 1 doesn't even impact the board. I suppose it's not terrible if you just plan to use it on whomever's playing black, but there's almost always a more efficient card to be putting in your deck in that case because you can just play something that has actual synergy with your plan.
Just curious how people feel about this in the general MTG community. I received a five minute ban from chat on Star City Games' stream chat for typing the words "white boy" in response to a commentator saying the words. Is this an abuse of power within the MTG community? I'm not sure what's wrong with the words, but I'm curious is there some offensive reference from magic's past that would warrant a ban for literally just saying "White boy"? What are other people's thoughts on this?
Overall, there's some awesome new art and some great new foils to spice up decks with, but there's no logical reason to buy any amount of packs of this set. The game stores that bought in the biggest are gonna get creamed almost just as hard as they did with Iconic Masters. This is all bad for the distributors as well. It's not really an issue for the players so long as they're smart enough not to go anywhere near this product until it tanks to sub $160.
Yea...looks like the set is a fail overall. Only 3 cards over $50 and hardly any others even over $30. The fact that even if you drafted rares for prizes in a draft and split a box between 8 people at msrp, and the top prize winner is STILL most likely to not recoup what they spent on the set is just ridiculous. Wizards should be taking this into account considering the fact that people drafting this set is what Wizards said the set was designed for.
EDIT: Unless the last rare is Grim Tutor this set wont be even remotely close to worth MSRP. Even with Demonic Tutor, I can't really see a box being worth more than $165.
The last thing I predict is seeing Grim Tutor. I know there's already 2 black mythics, but it COULD be a rare (which would be awesome). And besides, what ELSE do you really reprint from Starter 1999? Let's face it, that's THE card of that set by a landslide.
Maybe we will see Thorn Elemental downshifted to uncommon. He was iconic of the time.
Man now that you say this I could see them printing it at rare even just because a bomb uncommon seems unlikely for draft. OOF That's gonna be a hard fail if they bring that pointless thing back.
I think this is when we finally get are karrthus, tyrant of Jund reprint to present for "shards of Alana"
Would be awesome to see Karrthus with some new art!
For green mythics I think we may just see Tarmogoyf get rinsed again as it's the only mono colored mythic in green with absurd value still. I'm guessing it'll be accompanied by some jank card that needs new art.
Also personally think this set is gonna need a good land cycle to really go the distance. The fetches getting another rinse would be ideal, but I think doing something like shadowmoor filters would be appropriate as well. Although we already have 2 colorless mythics, I think Cavern of Souls could maybe come back since it's a land.

I don't know that anyone is necessarily wrong or right, but I certainly would've just scooped up my cards. Seems disrespectful to just keep playing. It's kind of like saying "We're not going to acknowledge your win, and all the hard time you put in to building and acquiring your deck was a waste."

That certainly is a viable solution. And the only solution if Wizards is gonna keep refusing to print a sufficient number of $30+ cards in the sets.
This is so sad and true, that it's actually kind of hilarious.
