I sadly have to concur with Unified Will getting shut off (or forcing me to play suboptimally to switch it on) too much for my liking. We're going back to Negate.

If only you boarded in negate against my gut shot to the face for the win! Wink

Just kidding, man. Thanks for the good game. I was lucky.

What do people think of using 2 or 3 spreading seas in the side instead of fulminators and/or molten rains against Tron/Eldrazi/Valakut and possily BGx decks? Way easier to cast and replaces itself. I've had great success with it - loved it in Merfolk, love it now.

This may seem like a strange question; but I've been looking for a solid '50/50' deck like Jund or Abzan... that isn't Jund nor Abzan. A deck with a fair chance across the board that is not a flash in the pan. Is Grixis Death Shadow that deck, do you guys think? If so, could you tell me why?

I only recently upgraded to my first non-budget magic deck (after having played tokens and neutered merfolk for a while) and decided on Grixis Delver. After completing it, I fell in love with Grixis Death Shadow and decided to take the plunge. Alas, because I had already splurged so much I had to settle for a relatively budget sideboard. Could you please critique my deck choice?

I have a feeling this deck will perform very well in the coming days because Fatal Push does not hit Tasigur, the Golden Fang and Gurmag Angler... About time for Modern to get more love for Grixis Delver!

Yet it seems Grixis Delver has dwindled from a 3.2% MTGO metashare to a mere 0.3%.

Sooo. [[Fatal Push]] just got spoiled. That's an amazing card for us, I'm thinking.

After getting bored of Magic a few months back, having Elves, Merfolk and B/W Tokens decks, I thought I was done with the game for good. Turns out I just needed some Grixis delver in my life! After having proxied it for a bit, I bought the Caleb version with the budget mana base (3 flooded strands + 2 bloodstained mires instead of scalding tarns).

What an unbelievably fun deck with its complex decision trees. I think you could play this deck for months on end and still discover new lines of play. I have to admit, right now I suck at it. But I believe many people here when I'm told to just stick with it.

I think in the end I'll enjoy the deck and variations of the Grixis themes for years to come. If only because I hope new cards will elevate the deck to Jund-esque levels of competitiveness.

Aside from CalebD's and Ari Lax's videos, are there any other good series you could recommend? In the Merfolk thread I was always a fan of Nikachu's videos. It's a shame not every deck has a streamer as dedicated as he is.

I've been playing stompy for about a year, to see if I liked the format without a big investment. Now that I know I like the format, I would like to buy a better deck that suits my play playstyle better.
What I'm looking for in the deck:
-not super aggressive nor super controlling, I like middle grounds, tempo and midrange (the more interactive, the better)
-t2 or better and resilient to meta changes, my main concern is getting a better deck that will last a long time.
-not jund nor abzan, they are out of my budgrt

tribal!! good old fish or elves Smile

I have both elves and merfolk. Elves are super aggressive and not very interactive at all. Merfolk are still on the aggressive side, and also on the lower end of interactivity (albeit better than many decks). They're both good decks and resilient to meta changes and budget friendly.

How about Grixis, starting with Delver? Much like Jund and Abzan, Grixis colours can always rely on getting a new good card every two or three new sets (opposed to Merfolk or Elves; who did get Harbinger of Tides and Shaman of the Pack, but that's much rarer).

I haven't been playing modern in ages, but I regularly read Modern Reddit. It had a thread about budget Midrange decks, and this deck was mentioned by the person who is deaddrift here I believe. I've read posts from the last 20 pages and I've een playtesting this deck on cockatrice with surprisingly good results (although hardly ever against tier decks).

I'm considering purchasing it. I've been playing B/W tokens and this deck is basically a souped up version of it. That said; I'm wary of buying a deck that's not even classified as competitive by MTG Salvation. What is the honest opinion of you guys? Will this deck ever compete against the likes of Collected Company Combo, Merfolk or - dare I say it - Affinity, Delver and Jund? Because that's basically my FNM location. The one good thing about where I play FNMs is that it's mostly all tier decks (even visited by some pro tour players), but never seen ANY tron there! Lucky me, huh? \

tl;dr: Do you think this deck will ever become a tier deck again?

I have the entire B/G stock elves list minus the playset of Cavern of Souls. Do you reckon the deck can still be competitive with a playset of Blooming Marsh?

Chalice of the Void on 1 really wrecks my best friend's Soul Sisters deck. I really don't find it to be a bad matchup if I manage to dismember their sister turn 1 or vapor snag their pridemate.

Something strange that I have noticed here: everything is played, from fun vial knights builds to all the tier 1 decks and everything in between. However, nobody plays burn. I've literally never been matched up against burn in an entire year. It's like there's a bit of a taboo against it. Furthermore, very few tron decks.

    WellPlayedSir, well played, sir!

My story is similar to yours - bought the deck two weeks before the GP Copenhagen win. I'm glad I did splurge, as the deck became much more expensive afterwards. I was also planning to go to the Dutch qualifiers... but I overslept. I kid you not. Alas, I am glad at least one Merfolk player made it to the nationals. Good luck there! I hope you keep us up to date.

edit: My friends (who know of my passion for our fishy friends) did update me about a Merfolk player doing very well. I'm assuming that must've been you then.

Is it just me, or is CoCo elves falling off the radar again? Was it just a flash in the pan, or what else is happening?

Reason I ask is that I am building CoCo elves right now, and my finances are too tight to get a deck that won't compete. My meta is relatively Grixis and Jund heavy, too - and I understand that is one of the weak matchups. That said, elves just look too damn fun.

Question - I'm thinking of getting into CoCo Elves as I'm nuts for good tribal decks. Problem is I only have 2 cavern of souls and currently can not afford more. Do you reckon this will be a huge problem? I solely play FNM, but our FNM environment contains some very competitive players. Mostly Grixis (Twin and Control), Jund and Abzan. Some Merfolk, Zoo and jank. No burn at all, funnily enough.
