    My prerelease experience.

I pretty much only go to prerelease events. I look forward to the 3 times a year when I have to the event with 100s of others. I was VERY concerned about this prerelease because it was going to be held at a small store. When I read the stores website it said only the 1st 24 people would even get a foil. I felt that a small store might have 100s of people show up and not enough space. I was so close in convincing myself to not even go.
I did go and the place was small. Not very well organized. I never played a FNM but could tell most everyone else did.
I didn't like that it was at a small store with just a FNM group. I enjoyed the older way with one big store holding the event and can see and meet many Magic Groups. It made it easier as an outsider to meet people if more people were strangers. ALSO.. at the small store there was absolutely no trading which I was disappointed in.
I did manage to get the foil. I didn’t know that the 1st 24 to sign up received a free pack! I believe over half the spots were already sold from the Friday night beforehand.
Unfortunately, this small store did NOT cap the game to 24.. I think we had like 42. I also didn't like that I had to wait till 11am till the first flight. I like it a lot more when there are several more flights in the day to have a little break to trade, eat, rest a bit, or find a 2 headed giant teammate.
This store only had 2 flights, with the 2nd one being an elimination. I would have played a 2nd flight but didn’t want to play an even LONGER 2nd flight with elimination. The 1st flight was actually cut short to only 3 rounds also at the last min.
I also didn’t like that this store didn’t go over any new rules to help explain what the new set is about. The judges and main judge were never introduced, I only assume they were the store managers.
If I remember correctly I was 19th out of the 42. Over the past 3/4 of 10 prereleases I have started winning a few packs. I felt the new prize structure was horrible. the 6 winners of 42 remember had a HUGE stack of packs.
I thought a prerelease is to help bring new players in, have fun, and like it better when the prizes are not only for the normal good guys who play all the time. If they stretched the prizes out more then beginners/casual players might have a chance.
I did get a chance to speak with I think one of the owners and was able to tell him all about my experience. I realize it was their first time to hold this event. I know its NICE to let the small stores make money from prereleases, and that possibly its hard for even large stores to rent huge spaces and organize it all... but I like the old way MUCH MORE!
I hope they will go back to it.
I was really tempted going to play in the release events this weekend but didn't.

I did get the white planewalker which was cool. I had her in hand 3 or 4 times but was only ahead enough to play her once, which she helped win the game easily.. didn’t get to indestructible though. I played Bant (GWU). Exalted worked fairly well especially since I had several more flying creatures. My losses were because others got out fatties by manipulating their mana base quick enough. I had a Bant Charm (the charms really were good), Naturalize (played with 1of2) and Dispeller's capsule because this set seamed pretty enchantment/artifact heavy. and a GREAT artifact was Quietus spike! I had it o-ringed by one opponent, which I then brought back into play by playing my o-ring. I didn’t really open up any cool fatty which I think is normally good to play in a prerelease. Oh well..
Overall.. even when the owner asked if I at least had fun... I didn’t really respond.. or said it was OK.
This new prerelease set up was not fun enough for me to play in a 2nd flight, go on Sunday, or even go to the release events.
I didn’t really have a long list of cards I liked out of this set, as I tend to only be interested in legacy. instead of going to play releases to get more cards I may buy a few packs but will probably just buy the few singles im interested in online.

I hope others had more fun than I!
and I hope prereleases at FNM are only during this block.

Thanks, it at least confirmed that the prerelease is in fact just at my local store.
Still sounds like a MESS when TONS of people show up and they dont have enough space, promo cards, and the sealed deck is sold out in now time.
I usually just try getting into the 2nd flight of a prerelease day.. but looks like i will have to try and be one of the earliest just to assure i get to play in the 1st of only two flights.
    grrr..
Sounds like either the small stores complained why they can't hold prereleases, it is too hard for big stores to mess with getting auditoriums, or something to that affect.
I dont think it will feel the same having a prerelease in a small little store with so few people.
    Thanks again

If the flights do fill up too quickly.. i hope locals and or employees don't somehow get signed up over new people attending.

I heard that there are some differences between previous prereleases and this weekends Shards.
I couldn't find a topic online so was hoping someone can help.
    What are the differences?
The best I can tell, It wasn't as easy for me to locate where the closest prerelease is to me (chicago downtown/loop), but it looks like that instead of one store having to rent a huge auditorium with 100s of MTG players attending, Wizards might have changed it to where each individual small store, like FNM, will have a much smaller limit sized round, and ONLY 2 rounds each day?
So that means... there is a very good chance that TOO many people show up at the same store and have to wait 4 hours to play in the next sealed??? So basically everyone MIGHT only get in one sealed round and if they want to play more have to play other formats?
I didnt find anything on two-headed Giant either.
Sorry if some of my terminology isnt correct, or if this info is described elsewhere. If it is please post the link.
    Thanks!!

    Hi Tom,
Just a remark on one thing you said in the show.
I TOTALY agree with you that Legacy sounds more encompassing than Vintage! I still prefer the old Type 1 and 1.5 better.
But the way I started to remember it is:
Just to think about the words in alphabetical order. L comes before V.. so Legacy has less cards that Vintage. Not sure if that might sound logical to everyone but it works for me.
    Smile

Fav Promo Card: I have almost exlusively went to only Pre-Release events over the past few years... So I would say Allosaurus Rider. I got it in Kyoto Japan! The only sucky thing was I was expecting the promo to be in Japanese! Oh well! Smile When they went to give out the cards the judges seamed a little happy that they would be able to give me the english cards. But I insisted that I wanted the Japanese cards. I pulled out every creature and tried playing the creatures as if they had no abilities. LOL Luckily the guy I played against was nice, didnt know any english. but it was fun to try and play. I played a creature and he played a card and motioned that my creature was dead. I didnt win but ended up with the Japanese cards I wanted. Smile

I really enjoy the Podcast!! Keep up the great work guys!

Why was this card taken off?
I saw it up awhile ago today.
    Knowledge Exploitation

    UU5 Sorcery Rare

Search target opponent's library for a card and remove it from the game. Then that player shuffles his or her library. Until end of turn, you may play that card as though it was in your hand without paying its mana cost.

I saw this card opened within the celephane packs of the 10th promos when they were handing them out on Game Day. I thought I would have seen this card that night all over the boards but this is the first time i found it. When I saw it I assumed that they stuck one in there for each location to get one.. but I now guess it might have been an accident in how it got in with the 10th promos.
Just wanted to verrify that I saw it. It, or one of them, was opened up in Austin, Texas.
I felt that the card store should have just given it to the next lucky person to get a promo, or add it to the winners items.. but the guy kept it for himself. So that kinda sucked. oh well

Evoke is a TERRIBLE keyword and I hope that this is just a well crafted fake. Remember channel from Kamigawa block? This is the same thing except that channel was instant speed and the ability was uncounterable, whereas these spells can still be countered. Yes Evoke can have more powerful abilities because they're slower and counterable, but it's nothing new.

    Great show!
I've been listening to the show while at work for several weeks now. It is enteraining, knowledgable, my prefered method for news, plus it helps my tuesdays go by quicker.

At first I didnt like the radio sound of episode 62, but towards the end I didn't even notice the difference. Hopefully the upcoming show with SKYPE will sound better.

That was a hilarious comment (and reaction) that Tom & Gavin had about having the "Dumb Down Time with Dom".

As with Tom's comment "is it [Lorwyn] a Wizards conspiracy to bring Tribal to the next level?" I totaly think he is right.

Just wanted to post up a few comments but should get back to work.
Next time can you post up times for the live show.

I too like the idea of a "Type II Generations" segment.

Magic History: Started just before The Dark came out and have only gone to pre-releases since Mirodin. Before then I only played casually and would buy a few packs each set. I only really look at Legacy decks but have a new interest in Peasant Magic.

Thanks again for a great show,
    Adam

It doesn't sound like many others feel a little outraged that others have the actual cards before pre-release??

The fact is they have the cards, and I am at least great full that they shared the cards with everyone else instead of waiting a day or two to slowly leak the info. I feel if someone has any new card info they should be required to post it to others ASAP and not dictate when the information is released to the community.

    This is just my view.
Screw the store and praise the collectors, even though they should report the store name to Wizards, even though that would suck for them.. because common think of how much fun they had playing a week before the rest of the world.

    Quote from Sweeney
Considering that the store charged $10 a booster, I think they may be aware of that.

I'd just hope that Hasbro's lawyers don't see this in the same light as the guy who posts about a bunch of cards that "fell off of the back of a truck".

I understand what you're saying blue, and I appreciate your opinion, however:

Here-in lies the contradiction: Most people who view spoilers (here) have knowledge of the full set before the PR and enjoy it because of what they have seen, I have heard both camps claiming to have enjoyed the PR either with or without full knowledge of the spoiler, so much so that I'm not really convinced one is correct more than the other.

It comes down to a matter of personal preference, and WOTC would do well to remember that some of their loyal (READ: 11 YEARS of playing MTG) customers like to have a full spoiler before the PR, and those who do not, needn't worry about it.

WOTC makes it seem like people have no choice when we (MTGsalvation) spoil unauthorised cards early, like people have to come here and look at them against their will, the truth is completely the opposite, ONLY those interested in spoilers seek them out in the first place, and we happen to be the place that gets the info usually first unauthorised or not.

WOTC claiming that our spoilers indanger sales and the enjoyment of a set is ludacris: Everyone will know all of the cards in the set through official channels by the time the cards are available for sale two weeks after the PR, all of this talk of Hydro's Purple symbols two months early and R_E playtest cards is a bunch of baloney with regards to the $$$ they made, it doesn't make a lickin' difference to their bottom line, and they all know it.

And MARO, I know you know that I know it too. Wink

Simply: If they make a crap set, it won't sell so great, no matter how much unauthorised or authorised spoilers we give or don't give people online. *phew*
