    What are your wincons?

I used to run a pair of lingering souls which is a real win con against most of the decks in modern surprisingly. Now I'm just running the man lands, surprise kitties, and a single grave titan because I play slowly. Once I'm more comfortable with my list, and therefore able to play faster, I'll cut the titan and replace it with either a snapcaster or another cantrip and work a creeping tar pit back into my mana base. Some people like to add a bunch of walkers to their deck which I still don't think is correct in an open meta game, it's too easy to die in modern while so many combo decks are running around.

RE: Why isn't this deck topping?
Well for all intents and purposes, it's new. Previously all esper colored decks just pretended to be control but were midrange or combo decks in reality. Decks like teachings, super friends, and gifts are just not close to good enough for modern while a pure control deck in esper colors hasn't even been bothered with much at all. In time with more people running it, you'll see it at the top I'm sure. But of course the real reason that you don't see it a lot is that I can't afford the $800ish to buy it on modo =P

Woo getting fancy as hell with the slaughter pact tech I see and cutting the leaks no less. I'm glad to see somebody else running pact, it can be so good in our list. I imagine that makes your combo/twin matches a little better with it being easier to tap down low and have protection up.

Glad you approve. It's nice tech indeed. What do you think of the optimized list?

Like I said before, your combo match up looks absolutely atrocious but the list should be solid if you only play against fair decks. If that's what you usually play against then it seems fine. Knots and pacts go a long way to help it out.

I can't imagine how much more I'd have to add to shore up my combo match ups. I haven't had significant issues.

Your list looks awesome. Really. This is definitely the direction to go. It's very versatile and can attack from multiple angles. You're right; it is like a budget Rock. The only recommendations I have right now is considering Smother and Utter End. Utter End was strong in my 7-1 result. Smother hits all the important stuff and manlands too. I really like Blood Baron here too. What do you think of my list?

I agree with TheNoob completely. Also, people honestly need to shy away from utilizing only WSZ as their only win condition besides Colonnade. This is too much of a gamble in Modern. Too slow. Too unreliable, especially in a field with Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek. I tested this style and I just hated the fact that when I was in a position to win, I was just dragging it on, digging for my win con and hoping my opponent didn't regain momentum. Not my style at all. Versatility is key.

Congrats on the 7-1! Is there a reason you're not using bobs? Have you found the deck to be smoother with sign in blood in his place? Did you ever get mana screwed with the BB and WW?

I'm not running Bob first and foremost because I haven't been able to afford them, so I designed my deck to generate more power at the higher end of the curve. Because of the higher curve, Bob isn't as ideal. Sign in Blood at 3 has felt just right. 3 is enough because we're midrange and to smooth out your draws, while tying the deck together. I've had no issues with mana. It can also be used as a surprise burn spell to finish off an opponent. Nice top deck when all you need is 2 more damage to win. Only other land I'd consider is Fetid Heath or 1-2 more fetches. Thank you!

Thoughts on 3x Snapcaster Mage with 2x Resto and 1x Batterskull?

That is fine. I ran something similar. 3 Snapcaster, 1 Vendilion, 2 Restoration.

    Thanks for the work, Stok.

Interesting that you went a different route from a 'usual' sideboard - you just sideboard in more counterspells against their comboes, or more removal, which in part makes sense because the deck runs a lot of drawing power. Theoretically, it is a 'soft' way of hedging your chances against a deck, but I have my doubts that the main deck is that powerful against the 'unfair' T1 decks that a potential versatility of the sideboard can be favoured against 'bullet-type' sideboarding, i.e. something like a leyline of the sanctity in opening hand can outright win against burn and provide an immense edge against B/G/x type decks; or the counters + some clock cards are enough against tron (If we are supposed to be the beatdown, ought we not have few more threats in the mainboard, despite it being against the idea of the deck), or a stony silence against affinity, and no graveyard hate seems to be a liability. But I would really like to hear how it goes in practice.

As a sidepoint - If no secret, why do you like the gravy train so much?

It's a beautiful inclusion and one that will be overlooked for a while. Grave's impact can not be underestimated, yet the 6 cmc is uncharted territory in Modern outside of ramp or rites strategies. In this deck, Grave Titan represents the epitome of a finisher. He is a 2 turn clock and played when your opponent has exhausted his/her resources. If he ever plays Souls alongside Grave as a finisher, he's a 1 turn clock. Lastly, as a Black finisher, he dodges Doom Blade/Slaughter Pact and he still leaves 4 power vs PtE. Great choice.

Agreed. Great list, Stokpile. I was surprised to see some choices and how often they excelled vs certain matches. I'll be taking several of them into consideration. I absolutely agree with the direction of more Walkers. 4-8 is where it's at.

Stokpile, very nice looking deck. Strong removal suite. Love the Grave Titan!

Thanks, Stok. My meta has more Decay than Remand, but Esper Charm is excellent here for emptying out their hand before dropping the Walkers. I've also considered Spellskite to protect Ashiok, among having other uses. If I do see Remand, Teferi is very good at nullifying them. I'm considering Condescend, Logic Knot, or Negate > Mana Leak. It has been the weakest link.

On the topic of Tamiyo, I tested her as a 1 of and was impressed when she locked down threats and forced overextension. If you do decide to run her, limit her to 1. Her second ability is good with Lingering Souls.

Very good points, but why are you on Slay when you can go with something more versatile like Smother? This hits all man anlands, including every significant 2 to 3 drop like Dark Confidant and Tarmogoyf.

@Stokpile I completely agree on your points about Utter End and Ashiok. I'm considering going with a second Utter End. As for Tron, we have enough board cards to at least grind.
