Get those event decks at MSRP while you can my friends. I didn't even make it through the whole list before I ordered couple online at a pretty good price. Never before have I rushed to an e-commerce site so fast and hoped the price didn't change while ordering.

So it seems, for at least the BfZ storyline, they are going to be consistent in Jace's inability to directly battle the Eldrazi. Fine. I won't complain about that further. It appears he is going to strictly adhere to being the brains of the saviors. Good story. I find it humorous that he only altered Jori's mind enough to get to her to head back to the encampment but not enough to prevent her from eventually realizing what had happened. Nice, subtle and low key humor. Dare I say even a bit ironic based on her comments regarding Gideon?

I bought a fat pack at a national chain store because my wife works for the local school district and she gets a 20% discount off purchases and I wanted to see if that included MtG products It does. So not only did I get it for just over $31, but I got one of those rumored 3 mythic fat packs plus a foil rare. Mythics were Liliana, Heretical Healer, Avaricious Dragon, and Alhammarret's Archive. Foil rare was Hallowed Moonlight. Notable rares include Languish, Exquisite Firecraft, and Llanowar Wastes. So yeah, pretty satisfied.

You do raelize that again, this is in character for the color right? Jace is a blue mage and a planner but he needs TIME. The man planeswalked right into an aggro deck and didn't have the proper spell set up to answer the threats. Jace wasn't in the right mindset to fight. Now personally, I'd like him to go a bit Loki and go invisible and stabby stab the Eldrazi but this was a pretty pretty strong example of blue's weakness in combat. Jace is likely to fair better once he's studied a bit and has some specific counter measures in place.

In this premise Jace is pretty much dead any time he planeswalks alone into an unknown, hostile environment (there is an office building sexual harassment joke in there somewhere). Jace has prior knowledge of the Eldrazi and the situation on Zendikar. Blue mages are all about preparation and planned reactions. He should have had all the information he needed from conversations with Gideon (and I also refuse to believe he wouldn't probe Gideon's mind for any extra information with or without Gideon's permission). In this story it appears Jace thought he was planeswalking into the middle of some scholarly lecture rather than a plane at war on the brink of annihilation. Again, I don't expect a blue character to be a match for a white or red character when it comes to hand to hand combat, or even a green character's ferociousness and strength. I do take exception to portraying a character as experienced and supposedly powerful as Jace as helpless and paralyzed when combat is necessary without any warning.

I understand that this was a Gideon story, but could they have made Jace seem just a bit more useless in battle? Seriously, next time why don't they tell a story where he wets his pants when the Eldrazi show up and then spends the rest of the story mind wiping everybody to make them forget that he had an accident.

To be fair the Eldrazi are a bad match up for Jace. The drones are just organs, they don't have minds he can affect (as far as we know) and if he tried to affect Ulamog he'd probably go mad. His illusions won't work against the eldrazi either most likely for the same reasons. All he's got left is some telekinesis which is not his forte and the sword Gideon gave him (lol).

I don't expect Jace to be anywhere near the equal of a White or Red Planeswalker in battle. However, his Illusions can kill and maim (see his last encounter with Garruk). He can at least "Unsummon" creatures. Yeah, Telekinesis isn't his primary strength but please don't present him as some physically inept bookworm that is only valuable in intellectual pursuits.

As soon as the deck list was spoiled I clicked right over to Amazon and bought two for just under $23 each + free shipping. Same seller now has them at $29 + free shipping. Glad I acted when I did.

So Nissa spends like 2 hours on Lorwyn for her first walk (give or take depending on how long she was unconscious)? It feels like the author was closing in on the word limit and remembered "Oh yeah, I'm supposed to include some mention of her first walk to Lorwyn in this story." I guess she will develop her "Elves Rule" mentality as time goes on.

Yeah your brain has two parts, the somatic and autonomic side. Its the autonomic side that controls your internal organs. I wouldn't call it memory but reflex. One doesn't control their heartbeat, the autonomic side regulates the heartbeat through measuring things like O2 and pressure in the blood stream. You can't really stop the brain from reflexing

    .

You can't really draw magical energy from plains, swamps, islands, mountains, and forests. You can't really summon angels, blast people with magical fire, raise the dead, cause things to grow at exponential rates, or even counter the spells they really can't cast. You certainly really can't fold yourself into the space between worlds and visit any you choose. But, in a fictional multiverse filled with nearly infinite, seemingly impossible feats of magic and socery, your one point of contention is that there is no known spell to shut down the autonomic nervous sysytem? Buy the premise, buy the bit.

However, it is a bit weird, because technically it isn't part of Jace's repertoire. It's kinda like Chandra, a pyromancer, would summon a stone elemental.

Note, that I do not expect a fantasy setting to be 100% scientifically accurate, but I never consider it ideal, if you go "Whu?" when reading a story, even if the "Whu?" is tiny and negligible in the grand scheme of things. It makes you realize it is just a story written by someone who either didn't know better or decided to cater to the uninformed. It pulls you out of the narrative, even if just for a moment.

    To sum it up:
Is the story bad because of it? Not at all. As I said, the detail is too small to impact the story at large.
But could it have been better if the detail had been changed? Personally, I believe that.

Well, I suppose we all have our own personal MtG dogma that defines limits to the individual abilities of Planeswalkers within the disciplines of each color. If you personally believe a Red Pyromancer is incapable of learning summoning magic for creatures outside of fire elementals and phoenixes, than I acknowledge your right to your beliefs. However, it seems to me that any degree of scientific accuracy and fantasy setting are mutually exclusive. I believe it is more important to adhere to rules as defined by the setting. And in the the case of MtG it appears if one can draw enough mana from different sources after study and practice, there is very little that can't be magically accomplished within the color wheel.

We don't need more U/B badguys

Your sentiment is well founded. However, if a villainous character walks like UB and talks like UB, then he's UB.

Well, the story started off really cliched. A talented, seemingly brilliant boy misunderstood by his life-weary, yet pragmatic father. At school he is mistrusted by teachers and bullied by classmates. Then a whole new world is opened up to him by a wise and empathetic mentor. A bit too derivative in my opinion.

It did pick up from there though. Shouldn't Alhammeret be UB though based on his motivations in the end?

It did leave me wanting a bit more of the Jace on Ravnica: Year One story though.

4.5 mythics/box seems like a reasonable rule of thumb. It appears that you actually got lucky and never opened a significantly below average box with only 3 mythics or the depressing 2 mythics box or the infamous 1 mythic box.

Also, going forward, remember the statistician that drowned in a river with an average depth of 2 feet.
