We already had Heliod's Mattress Emporium in the last set. I wouldn't look too deep into it. But a return to Theros would be pretty nice if it did happen
The sets are very different in nature, though. Usually, weird/offbeat cards in Standard sets are plants for upcoming mechanics/planes, yeah. Like the triple hybrid creatures from RTR block preceding Devotion in Theros. Heliod's Hall will not be in Standard with a possible enchantment set/theme in a future standard set. This dude will.
Wtf? Destroy all creatures you don't control costs 9 mana, but destroy all planeswalkers you don't control only costs 2? Except The Elder Spell is even better than that because it also puts extra loyalty counters on any planeswalker you happen to have.
Yeah, this card is literally and deliberately broken.
What's the last time you had a board state with 3 planeswalkers?
What's the highest # of walkers you ever saw in play, counting yours and your opponent's?
Now answer this for creatures.
Am I the only one thinking it's a bit anti climactic that Gideon went through a bunch of crap, got the Blackblade with whatever that ensues to his soul and his triumph is just killing a few eternals?
I think the art and flavor text of his Triumph form a hint that Gideon doesn't really triumph. I think he helps, and his motivation is the well-being of others, and he ultimately will be one of the casualties of the war. I think someone big in the good side has to die, and since we know Ajani lives (due to Chandra's comics), two new White walkers have been introduced and we still have Elspeth to rescue, I think Gideon bites it.
I don't doubt the veracity of that statement, but doesn't that give us considerably more blue walkers than any other color? Maybe I'm losing my mind, but it felt overwhelmingly blue before we had 4 more blue walkers spoiled one after the other. I'm not hating on it...just seems super weird.
Mark Rosewater confirmed that:
20 walkers are uncommon (10 hybrid, one for each pair, and 2 monocolored for each color)
13 are rare (with some being gold but not all pairs gets a gold one and not a single pair appears twice)
4 mythic (Gideon, Liliana, Bolas and Tezz)
Since Teferi is the UW Gold and Dovin the UW Hybrid, yes, Narset has to be Mono Blue. It doesn't mean Blue has more than the other colors, though - not considering the monocolored ones. I think with Bolas and Tezzeret being U/x, Blue will be one of the more represented colors, but not by a lot. Red also has quite a few ones: we still have Sarkhan and Jaya, just as Blue still has Narset and Tamiyo to appear.
I feel like we still need to resolve the Raven Man, so Lilly will live. Giddeon doesn't have much story reason to live though.
I would agree, but he hasn't gotten back to Theros yet to amend with his past, and I'm pretty sure he will be the one retrieving Elspeth from the Underworld. Probably as Ajani's last wish...
Of the current Gatewatch Gideon is the only one that is expendable as his story is done.
All five (counting Nissa here) still have story to develop. I'm pretty sure Chandra, Jace and Gideon will outlive this. Nissa is expendable, and Liliana is not (due to Raven Man) but the trailer points to that possibility. I wouldn't put any hopes in the end of this story being anything other than Gideon using Blackblade to end Bolas.

Yeah. If Chandra's Triumph showing a Dovin engulfed in flames was not a character's death, this could be just a loss of spark, not life.

Well it's basically Exaltedvoke, so it's fair to refer to either/both
