Carrion Ants costs twice as much and has base P/T 0/1.

Nantuko Shade was once a Standard powerhouse, is base P/T 2/1, costs BB, not 1B, costs B to activate, not 1, and has no exile effect.

This thing is, on the one hand, kind of crazy, and, on the other hand, probably just a bargain bin rare...

Yes, but the ants are much older, and once upon a time I remember them seeing some play in my local meta. But, I couldn't find anything else that did the Shade thing for 1. While Nantuko Shade was played in mini black aggro in it's day this could make it into something. I'd love to see Surge Engine, Evolved Sleeper and this with a whole whack of powerstones and control be a deck.

I might squeeze this in as a 1 of into my Jeskai control list. It's a nice pay off for nearly creatureless.

That Nantuko Shade ability is not nothing in this powerstone rich environment.

(I guess technically it's Carrion Ants but that reference seems really dated)

They really want to support Soldier tribal. This one leaves little blockers when it attacks, and then converts any late-game stragglers who you don't want to attack into card draw.

Who said anything about not attacking? It's stupidly easy to give your soldiers Vigilance.

I was referring to Lord of Tresserhorn's comment.
You get an 8/8 if you pay 4GGGG.
Who seems to be misunderstanding how the card works.

And yes an 8/8 for GGGG or an 11/11 for GGGGGG or a 5/5 for GGWW with 2 other creatures getting +1/+1 counters each definitely is Mythic. How Lord of Tresserhorn was describing it would have made it no better than a common.

With that said it also has ZERO keywords on it. I am going to have fun playing an 8/8 for four mana but it dies to every piece of removal under the sun and the puniest 1/1 token can chump block it turn after turn. Would have been truly mythic if it would have included something like this.....

If 4 or more G are spent casting Clay Champion it enters the battlefield with a Trample counter. If 4 or more W are spent casting Clay Champion it enters the battlefield with a Flying counter. Or something like that. As the card stands it is cool but not particularly powerful outside of limited and Standard. It could have been a Rare imho.

Yes, I think the lack of keywords really does our this card into the "that's neat" realm. It's probably complexity more than power which made it Mythic. But, with some support it could do work.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but for Clay Champion, you can just pay GGGG and get an 8/8? Is that good?

That is how I read the card as well. If not its phrased poorly. Should have been for each GG spent on the X cost put three +1 counters on CC.

Frankly a 5/5 vanilla creature with no abilities for 6 mana at mythic??? That could literally be a common and not even a particularly good one either.

It has to be as you and me are thinking. If not it is the biggest bust at Mythic ever!!!

Based on things like Crypt Champion there is very clear precedent that 4 and CCCC are not the same thing. This is an 8/8 for GGGG or I am very very confused.

Ok this as commander promotion as it gets

now Commander decks can be built around legends already printed

Other forums seem to believe that these will be dirt cheap and for entry level purposes. I think using reprints is a fine strategy for that, a clear signal to experienced players "this is not for you". But for my 13 years old nephew, maybe it's perfect.

yea I wouldn’t hold hope for that

Knowing wizards there will be atleast one chase reprint card inside These and those alone will like prevent it from being dirt cheap

For example the Gisa and geralf deck could end up having something like Rot Hulk or Sidisi, Undead Vizier as reprints

Sure, that's possible. I would hope that if they do they print scads of these and tank the price. I don't see a good reason for Rot Hulk to be a $30 card other than insufficient printings.

Look, an unblockable 3/2 for 3! That you can play on 2, so it can swing on 3, that can pump itself more, and draw cards later.

Well, looks like Blue will also get on theEvolved Sleeper train as well, these kind of cards always end up finding a home, dropping this guy and protecting it feels like a solid plan, a 5/4 unblockable creature wins games fast.

With this, Combat Research, Ledger Shredder, and Spectral Adversary, mono blue tempo might not even want to be a Delver deck anymore.

I agree that Surge Engine looks really good but it's not Blue's first crack at this particular Pinata and I'm a little leery as I really expected Ascendant Spirit to do more work so I'm not sure what to make of this.

I think Ascendant Spirit suffered in part because it missed both Curious Obsession and Combat Research. Pioneer spirits runs it and I think a standard with enough other support for mono blue tempo would have seen more of it.

That is probably true. I suspect they felt that since it came with its own Ophidian effect it was strong enough not to warrant more but a Curious Obsession certainly would have helped.

Kind of weird that you can choose what to look for. This means you will always know what exactly to search, with one or two backups in case you've drawn it already. This makes it less into a "how quickly can i find a card matching the criteria" and more into a "how quickly can I find _the_ card I'm looking for." Would have been better if an opponent chooses.

You are forced to choose the hunt at random (you may rig which Scavenger Hunt goes into your Attractions deck so you can always find a card of any possible hunt on it), and it looks like you're forced to shuffle the found card back into your library.

I think Nicol Bolas, Ugin, and Angrath fit 2 out of 3 hunts for this card, though.

3 of 3 when looked at from Emrakul's perspective.

I feel like there's some sort of combo that involves Roon of the Hidden Realm, Elvish Archdruid a haste enabler and this that ends up being the takeaway from the whole set. But, then again, Elfball probably should already be Acorn. :p

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the English name is not Ancient Silverback which is interesting as that card is clearly Ancient Silverback in Portuguese while Ancient Silverback is translated as Ancient Gorilla of the Silver Back.

In any case, good green beater is good.

yep I think the right answer is “Silverback Elder”

I'd been wondering about Silverback Ancient but Elder is better.

The English translation is clearly missing "this turn" on the tax. And,since a huge amount of blue should be playing on your opponent's turn this is basically downside only for your opponent. Not being legendary is really nice, allowing blue mages to have more then one of these on the battlefield is dangerous. As a blue player, I approve.

I'm afraid I'll have to agree with this post instead:
Symmetrical feels meh and having your opponent get first crack at the extra card feels even worse. Hard pass for me in Standard, Pioneer and Modern.

Too many opponents with pretty much no hand/with only lands in hand/in the late game with many lands on the battlefield/also playing the instants game will gladly draw that extra card.

For sure there's a risk to this card, and maybe the risk is too high but I'm willing to give it a try, at least on the board against stompy
