    I am fairly certain you can't, as the new bag of holding is seen as a different entity than the one you had on the field previously, so it would not consider the exiled cards to be exiled by itself. Someone will probably drop by with all the proper rule references though.

    This is probably one of the more frustrating rules of magic, because it seems counter intuitive and frustrating when you want to make cards like this work.

    In some ways, yes, but in other ways no. Let’s say you have two Bag of Holdings out, each with a few cards exiled, and both get bounced to your hand then your opponent makes you discard one at random. Which one was discarded? When you play the one in your hand, which set of exiled cards do you get? Because card can go into hidden zones, the rules have separate out instances of a card such that any time one enters the battlefield, it is considered its own new thing.

    It's also worth noting that the bag of holding is only an Artifact while on the battlefield. This is true of all cards. In any other zone it is an artifact card, or the idea of an artifact. It is therefore not at all the same bag of holding even in flavor. I find it much easier to remember those rules interactions when I keep that flavor in mind.

    Infinite Mana? Nissa only buffs the mana production of Forests and the Field isn't a forest... while not quite as sexy, Gift of Paradise plus Gauntlets of Light would do the trick (I think)

    Nissa makes the land a creature, leyline makes it produce one extra mana, soo you tap for W and get WWWG but ye, Gift and nissa with a forest also do the trick

    Ah yes, I'd missed the Leyline impact in there. Thank you.

    Edit, that won't work either as it's not additional mana.

    Fun with elementals like Cytoplast Root-Kin or Cytospawn Shambler that come in with +1/+1 counters on them and sit in the graveyard as 0/0s as well as any of the X/1s (Ligthning Skelemental, Spark Trooper and Groundbreaker all seem reasonable). Sadly, many of */* elementals will be either hidden from this guy while in the graveyard or too small to bother reanimating.

    I'm thinking:

    Turn 1: Hallowed Fountain
    Turn 2: Godless Shrine
    Turn 3: Float WW, Lotus Field.
    Brought Back.

    Well that seems like a great way to get a T4 Teferi, Hero of Dominaria online with access to a tasty land to untap with his +1. Sadly, I don't think it's right for Modern Esper as it needs to be reactive on the first few turns but while Big T is in standard, could be fun.

    So it's a fixed mini Second Sunrise. Given that the referenced card is a powerhouse and the spine of Eggs decks this should see some play. Now, bringing back 10 eggs is obviously more powerful than 2, but it's still loopable with Eternal Witness Viashino Pyromancer and Phyrexian Altar. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

    Does tron have any appetite for this? my feeling is that other than Ancient Stirrings and the baubles they aren't exactly rich in card selection/draw. That being said, it's a pretty tight list so I just don't know if there's anything that can be cut for it.

    If this were a land like some of the other forges, I would be laughing maniacally. as a 4 mana artifact, I don't see it. 4 is a really clunky cost for Tron, once we are paying more than the 1-2 for our land search/fixing, it really has to do some work. and this would have to replace one of the cards that can actually win the game, but it is worse than any of them. maybe a prison deck could use it, but 90% not Tron

    Yeah, that's more or less what I expected but when I see things like this I just want to throw it against the wall and see what sticks.

    Little surprised to not see any love for squad Captain as a way to break board stalls in limited.

    Squad Captain has a use for being a 2 power revival target for Alesha, Who Smiles at Death and Reveillark.

    That's another good point in it's favour. I could see an Orzhov tokens or Selesnaya tokens strategy enjoying the captain with Reveiilark. Also, could be helpful in a project-x sort of build.

    So this would be the play for Green/Red decks?

    T1 Stomping Ground + Llanowar Elf
    T2 Land + Blood Sun
    T3 Land + Lotus Field 7 mana.

    Would Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner or Nissa, Who Shakes the World make sense here?

    I was goldfishing the above setup and it didn't feel consistent, Have 3 Lotus Vale for testing, do we also 4 Rootbound Crag for the mana base?

    If I'm not misunderstanding your steps, how are you playing 2 lands on T3? I get to 6 Mana on 3 - T1 land and Elf, T2 Land and Blood Sun (lave the turn with 3 mana) T3 Lotus Field, so land, land, elf, Lotus Field - 6 mana, which is still great on T3. Play Kiora, minus her, drop a giant monster and draw a card. then you've got 10 mana on 4. I feel like that might get us something.

    Edit: I feel like the new Dragon Legend is exactly what you want to ramp into here, so T3 (christmas land perhaps) Kiora, Samut, Tyrant Smasher, t4 Hasty 7/7 flying dragon with buit-in 1 sided Wrath. Seems like fun. Sure, it's a little glass-cannon ish but no risk - no reward right?

    Disclaimer: Following comment is based on what i understand thusfar in regards to the "(For example, 2B and 1BB are different mana costs.)" explanation and understanding of the current modern format

    When comparing this card to Tarmogoyf you have to do so in the context of eternal formats and mainly modern midrange, since that's where that card is played most.
    The modern format is also one where 4toughness is a very important feature to have on a creature to be considered playable if it doesn't come with protection or some way to gain value from it before it gets removed. Otherwise it has to be cost efficient so that the 1v1 trade into fo a Lightning Bolt, for instance, is worth it.
    With the current speed of the format, curve is also of some importance and considering these factors, this guy has to land on curve with at least 4 different mana costing nonland cards in the yard.
    To my limited knowledge, only RBx based midrange decks can do that (easilly) using loot/rummage spells. But the decks that run those, don't run Goyf.

    I've tried to sequence T1, T2, T3 in existing GBx midrange shells. In those existing decks, my own traverse list could potentially do this, but often this is not the best line of play and heavilly dependent on the opponent's game plan.

      Sequence i.e.:
      * T1: Thoughtseize/Inquisition + Mishra's Bauble
      * T2: Traverse + Path
      * T3: Demon with 4 counters.

    The card definitely has some build around potential but imho this creature will hardly ever be cast on curve as a 4/4 and should be considered a fininsher for the late(r) game. It then can enter as a 4/4 or bigger deathtouch/flying threat, depending on build. Which is very, very good.
    I can see myself trying out 1 or 2 of these in my list, but to do so, i want to cut on the top end.

    Add faithless looting and surgical extraction and this demon 6/6 on turn 3

    It's also worth remembering that black is the color of Liliana of the Veil, StreetWraith and a few other tasty tidbits. It should be relatively trivial to get this guy to a decent size in Modern, maybe a T4 play rather than a T3 play as I think I'd rather Lilly on 3 and use her discard 2x for control and demon chow.

    Honestly people are really sitting in Magical Christmas land with this guy... the only way his ability can be used with even remote frequency is if you mill yourself. But then we are in a catch 22. In order for his ability to have the most oomph, you need a lot of legendaries. But in order to use his reanimating ability with any frequency, you need to fill up the yard, but thosevery same self mill cards are rarely legendary... meaning you need to stock up on more non-legendary spells.

    This guy is a big old catch 22...
    Not really? At the start of a game he's useful because he cheapens your overall deck. Five drops on four and so on. If you get into a late game with him then you have resources to burn out of your yard.

    Also not a catch-22 because you can just run Dredge with him and be gross that way.

    Have to agree with you, even if the reanimation ability is basically just trinket text the cost reduction is the real value. And late game the reanimation is a reward for playing redundant copies of legendary cards in 60 card magic.

    This card now works well with the new Lotus Field that was revealled today.

    'buster

    I think it depends on what you are trying to do and how you support it. Since you need to sac 2 lands to the Lotus Field and spend 2 and sac another land to this effect you're down 2 and at parity for land mana production. Now, maybe that's okay if you're playing Wrenn and Six or Lord Windgrace or Titania, protector of Argoth or even Exploration and Crucible of Worlds then you're probably laughing. But, there are plenty of times when the two are dangerous (to yourself) together.
