A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

Pretty excited to play with this guy. Probably couldn't have made a better card for this deck myself.

    The Gitrog Monster 3GB

Legendary Creature - Frog Horror - Mythic

    Deathtouch

At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice The Gitrog Monster unless you sacrifice a land.

You may play an additional land on each of your turns.

Whenever one or more land cards are put into your graveyard from anywhere, draw a card.

    6/6

I have been looking to include another wrath effect into this list and wanted to poll you guys on how you feel about Tragic Arrogance - anyone have any experience using the card? I like the fact that I get to choose what is left behind, so I feel like it allows me to setup a board that lets Aurelia pound into people.

I have had a lot of success with Tragic Arrogance in my Anafenza deck. Now, of course, Aurelia doesn't exile the creatures, but my build of Aurelia frequently has an artifact, creature, and enchantment in play, so being able to choose does seem very strong. If you are playing this and Cataclysm, it would give you redundancy to be able get out of a lot of board states that Boros has a lot of difficulty dealing with otherwise.

I've got a few questions about the archetype. First, how many basics do you think is correct? I'm on a single forest right now, but I'm open to playing more. Second, in regards to the total number of lands, how few is too few? And finally, in regards to artifact ramp, is there any ramp that is worth running? Currently I'm playing quite a few (Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Mox Diamond, and Chromatic Lantern) but I'm starting to feel like they arent worth it. Any feedback would be appreciated.

This is my decklist if you want to see it.

Here is my decklist, for reference. Please note, mine is not a competitively tuned list. I run 2 Forest, 1 Island, 1 Plains. I also run all 4 green fetches, Krosan Verge, and Skyshroud Claim, so it is important for me to have enough targets through the course of the game. Having more basics also helps to hedge against Blood Moon and Wave of Vitriol to some extent.

I think you really want to be at 50 lands minimum in this deck. With the Vancouver Mulligan in place, most decks will want to run 36-40 lands just to make sure they are able to start with enough lands. In a deck where our lands are our main value engine and win conditions, we should be running much more than other decks. My list runs 56, and here's why:

These lands don't produce any mana without help from Chromatic Lantern or Urborg:

    Dark Depths
    Flooded Strand
    Glacial Chasm
    Maze of Ith
    Misty Rainforest
    Verdant Catacombs
    Windswept Heath
    Wooded Foothills

Let's add the cards which aren't primarily intended to make mana, too:

    Krosan Verge
    Maze's End
    Petrified Field
    Slippery Karst
    Strip Mine
    Tolaria West
    Tranquil Thicket
    Phyrexian Tower
    Volrath's Stronghold

That puts me at 17 lands which are essentially spells. Subtract this from 56 and you have 39 "lands", which is about right for an EDH deck that wants to make land drops consistently throughout the game. Since I am playing the deck as a control deck like umtiger, I want to make all my land drops.

I would cut the artifact ramp you listed except for Chromatic Lantern. I run the lantern because it's too good to pass up, and I run Darksteel Ingot for it's indestructibility. I don't usually have a lot of uses for colorless mana in the early turns, so the others would mostly be cards that just get swept away with our commander's eventual death. I think Mox Diamond would be the next one to include if you just really want to ramp; it is the classic "lands" mana rock after all.

p.s. Your deck looks really solid. I think I will incorporate Crackling Perimeter into my build.

I need everyone's opinions on Recoup vs Mizzix's Mastery.

    Pros for Recoup:
    1) Can be used twice because of Flashback.
    2) Can be discarded and still get one use out of it.

    Pros for Mastery:
    1) You cast the targeted card without paying it's mana cost.
    2) Can hit multiple cards if Overload is paid.

I'm going to have to give Recoup the nod here, for the reasons you stated. I agree overload on Mizzix's Mastery is good, but it's not busted like it is in a Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind deck. The way I have built my deck, I am mostly relying on permanents to give me spell effects (Ugin's Nexus, Spine of Ish Sah et al), so I don't find myself with a 'yard full of instants and/or sorceries very often. Just my .02

    Hi,
really nice list! looks explosive and fun at the same time:thumbsup:
one thing i'm wondering, maybe someone already pointed that,
but why are you not playing scroll rack?
standalone it doubles your handsize, especially with fetchlands,
but the real deal is the synergy with land tax, most insane card draw enging imho!?

I play Scroll Rack in my build here. It's as good as you think it is.

Report from a friend at the GP:

    Shard of Broken Glass (1)
    Artifact-Equipment
    Equip-1
Equipped creature gets +1/+0, when it attacks you may put the top 2 cards of you library into your graveyard.

It is worth noting that they are still fab in EDH where getting duals with your Farseek is great. A lot of green ramp cards let you search out duals with basic land types and this may very well be the best budget duals that let you do that.

These duals are definatetly going up when BFZ stops being drafted. Not much probably but still a bit.

The Battle for Zendikar lands really have no place in modern. They are just going to be standard lands. Their price can go up but not too much. Your are looking at a top price of $8-9 per land and that's really it. That's only for the best lands in the best decks while they are in standard. Or the prices can just keep being low since this block is being opened like crazy for expedition lands. Once they rotate they will be $1-$2 lands. Their value will be more heavily determined by the lands printed in Shadows over innistrad than anything else. If the innistrad lands are better these may fall out of use. I do feel that the set has just been opened way too much for prices to go up.

There is no way duals with basic land types will go for a dollar. That is even less than what pain lands went for and these are a class above them.

Modern is not the only format.

I'm with this guy. I play EDH almost exclusively and the battle lands function like ABUR duals about 90% of the time.

On that note, what do people think of picking up foils? Are they something I should be grabbing now while they're sub-$10, or is there some obvious point where they will bottom out?

Here is my argument for using Puca, pretty simple and straight-forward: I ship out cards I don't need and in return I receive rare/valuable cards I want in exchange. Many of these cards I would not have received on Deckbox and certainly wouldn't have even been able to source locally. In addition to the cards listed as received here, I will be receiving an expedition Strip Mine shortly.

    As Eryops pointed out:

You have sent 234 cards with a total value of 108,762 PucaPoints and you have received 68 cards from other members with a total value of 106,355 PucaPoints.

Trading up is the best! I know my case may be unique due to the cards I'm looking for, but I wish everyone good luck with their future trading endeavors (on or off Puca).

Seems pretty likely to be real. Since most spoilers so far have been in the form of boosters, and this is just a random common, I bet the source has 14 or so other cards that they haven't revealed yet.

    That's one giant booster pack!

Does having a Gold membership make you look more appealing to others when requesting cards? Let's say 21 individuals all want a Lion's Eye Diamond, and they are all Silver or free membership, while I am the only Gold membership.

Considering the various factors, will a Gold member have a stronger likelihood of getting the LED sent to them over others w/o the Gold membership?

I wouldn't say I'm biased between Gold and Silver, but I'm definitely biased between Gold/Silver versus Common. I didn't used to be when I started with Puca a year ago, but when I have issues with sending or receiving, it's proportionally the common members that I'm having trouble with. I think you've got the nail on the head that those that pay for the service are more likely to take their trades serious and not mess around.

So to answer your question - if I've got the choice between Gold/Silver and Common members to send a card to - controlling for all other factors - I'll always preferentially send to a Gold/Silver.

Something else to consider is that Silver/Gold members are able to sort out disputes in condition or pay off bounties by sending points directly between members. I've sent a card I thought was NM before and caught flak from the receiving party. The card was cheap enough I didn't want to bother arguing, so I sent him 20% as if it were SP. With a common member, you're looking at dealing with a return process or having to involve the admins to send points (if this is even something they do anymore).

Glad to hear Chandra's been working out for you. The other night I ended up getting 2 wraths off of her, which felt incredible. Fellwar Stone and Haven of the Spirit Dragon have been in my list for some time now, but I am interested to hear about your experiences with Mirrorpool. I have cut all CIPT lands from my list recently. Is the creature copy worth it? It's hard to imagine the spell copy is. Thanks for the update, keep up the degeneracy!

I cut Valakut because it CIPT and might not get too many triggers off of it, so I replaced it with Mirrorpool. I haven't used it to copy a spell, but the copy creature I have used multiple times. Copying Battlesphere is pretty good. I even copied Oracle and got value. The possibilities are really good, especially with Wurmcoil and Blightsteel. I'd say its worth a shot to at least test with it.

I agree it does seem better than Valakut in this shell. I already shipped off my one copy on Pucatrade, will have to pick up another for testing. Copying Sandstone Oracle sounds like a cream dream.

On the subject of lands, I have been having decent success with Sea Gate Wreckage as well, might be something for you to test out.

After the initial excitement of receiving a few 100 point cards, I've yet to receive anything for the past almost two weeks solid, and have yet to receive anything of value for the entire month and a half I've been on the site. My list has various stuff on it (not just fetches and shocks) but so far it feels like no one is sending anything good out.

Sitting on almost 5k worth of points, out all the stamps/cards I've used to accumulate these points, and to be honest I'd warn anyone not looking for bulk rares to stay away.

Received a NM-/SP+ Revised Tundra last week. I'm going to keep grinding those points until the bottom falls out, I guess. To each his own.

Can anybody confirm this is the correct signature? Looks close, would prefer a confirmation before pulling the trigger on a trade. TIA!
