Hey all! A bit late to the discussion with this one, but what are some thoughts on running Mikaeus, the Unhallowed? He makes for some really easy infinite combos with a BUNCH of cards I'm already running (Triskelion, Workhorse, Murderous Redcap, Pentavus). He synergizes really well with the vast majority of the deck, which abuses ETB effects - double Fleshbag Marauder, Siege-Gang Commander, etc. He protects from board wipes, he discourages attacking us...But he's hard to cast and hard to flip off Grenzo.
It feels wrong to NOT run such a strong combo enabler; it's like playing Niv-Mizzet without any Curiosity effects. But is it worth the slot in our deck?

Secondary question, what do people think about Nim Deathmantle? It goes infinite with Workhorse or Ashnod's Altar + half of our deck. It can protect Grenzo (or any important creature) from removal and increase his power. It's a cheap artifact that can be sac'd with Goblin Welder...But it's a hefty mana sink when we already want to spend any spare mana on Grenzo activations.
Same problem. It works REALLY well with a ton of cards we're already running, but is it worth playing?

Notice it doesn't say the best possible turn 0/turn 1 winning hand. I think a hand with Leyline of the Void, Leyline of Sanctity, and a way to protect them only has to worry about a couple of cards. Tendrils, Oath, FlashHulk, Dredge, Painter's Servant, and a few others have an extremely hard time winning with those 2 cards in play.

Are you using cards that you own or are you planning on purchasing this list?

Your list could definitely use a copy of Rift Elemental. Repeatable time counter shenanigans and, with enough mana, can even deal decent damage. Aeon Chronicler could also be a good option for plenty of card draw and a solid creature.

Since you're already running Deadeye Navigator, you could run something like Izzet Chronarch or Mnemonic Wall to return counterspells or bounce to your hand every turn.

  • posted a message on Nin, the Pain Artist questions
After way too much thought, I finally decided that my next EDH deck will be a control deck using Nin, the Pain Artist. The deck will mainly be used in multiplayer games, but the occasional 1v1 game could happen. I'd like to build the deck on a budget (trying to avoid $10+ cards).

    1. My main question is about win conditions. Most of the decks I've seen rely on infinite mana + Nin's ability to win. Some rely on causing the opponent to scoop to a 30 card hand with a dozen counters. I'm trying to avoid infinite combos and I don't like relying on concessions. Are there any other solid options? (bonus points if it's not just attacking with a Maro-type creature)

    2. Is it worth playing cheap and efficient draw spells like Ponder or Preordain with Nin as the general? What about expensive and powerful draw spells like Recurring Insight?

    Thanks!

  • posted a message on 1vs1 Commander Question - Vendilion Clique
I've been out of the game for a few years. When I was last playing, I remember the number one "god tier" deck in 1vs1 EDH being Vendilion Clique. It was basically Clique, lots of instant speed draw and bounce, and 30+ counterspells...and had something like a 90% win rate against everything. I've noticed that Clique is not banned as a general AND Clique is not dominating the 1vs1 format.

So I guess my question is: Why is this deck not crushing everything else? What EDH decks/generals can beat endless counterspells + hand disruption + a fast-ish clock on an flying creature that ignores life totals?

On a related note, why are some of these other generals banned? I can easily see how powerful Edric, Spymaster of Trest or Oloro, Ageless Ascetic can be, but I don't see how they could fight Clique.

On another related note, is it now possible to play general-based commander decks in 1vs1? I remember extremely powerful generals - Azami, Uril, Zur, etc - becoming mediocre decks because they could never resolve.

    Thanks!

Sorry if this is a dumb question - I'm just getting back into the game. But isn't Cloudpost banned in Pauper?

As for the deck, I like it. What do you think about Samite Censer-Bearer to stop things like Electrickery? It's not completely devastating, but it still kills half the creatures in your deck. What about any changeling cards?
