Hello everyone. I figured since I picked up this deck recently and have begun to mess around with it, I should probably add my $0.02

First of all, here is the deck list that I am currently testing:

    And my 'board is ...

(Definitely not optimized. I plan to add Lifebane Zombie and Xathrid Necromancer.)

So I spent all of yesterday playtesting this build with a friend of mine who is going to GP Chicago with me this following month. For the record, he is playing U/G ... Monsters? I think that I would classify it as U/G Monsters. It's a homebrew that he made. But anyway, I played against this all day if it helps you understand some of my feelings regarding this deck.

So, personally, I am in love with Mogis's Marauder's. I really feel like he's a boon to this deck, as it helps you push for that extra bit of ground damage with the intimidate that he gives everyone. I don't know if I'd consider running less than 3 of him, as I was always glad to see him in my hand. Yesterday, he won me games. EDIT: And with Whip of Erebos as a 1 or 2 of, I feel like this guy might shine.

Second, the addition of Nighthowler is just something that I am testing. I decided that having my board wiped late game (which I know that we don't want to get into, but overall I felt like my games went into turn 6-10 more than I'd like) is crippling. I feel like he's decent recovery from a board wipe, and is a reasonably priced pump spell if you have a couple creatures already in your graveyard. That said, I probably am not going to have him in my 75, as the few times that I did have him in play I was pretty unimpressed with him. But hey, that's why we playtest right?

On Brain Maggot vs. Spiteful Returned, I'm really unsure as to which way I lean. I am flipflopping worse than a politician when it comes to these guys. On the one hand, Spiteful Returned helped me push for that extra damage that I needed, but at the same time, Brain Maggot is just excellent hand removal, and a lightning rod for punishment that would otherwise go to my 3 cmc guys.

After playtesting, I found out that Master of the Feast is really a superb card. The trade off is reasonable, and swinging for 5+ in the air is pretty awesome, creating a quick clock to close on the damage that you have already done. He didn't really blow back on me at all the whole time that I was playing him. I really need to have +2 more of him in my build, I believe.

When it comes to Herald of Torment, I dropped him down to 2 because I was starting to get a little worried about having a total of 8-12, 3 cmc guys in my maindeck. My thoughts are, when I did play him, I always wanted to play him out unbestowed, under which he felt a little underwhelming at times. I definitely would like to hear your guys thoughts on Mogis's Marauder vs. Master of the Feast vs. Herald of Torment, and what combination you prefer.

All of this being said (and I think that I touched on all of the major points that I wanted to mention), I am seriously considering a splash of either blue or white. I saw a really cool variant of MBA with a blue splash that added Duskmantle Seer for some more late game action, along with some more board disruption. And I am very curious about added Athreos, God of Passage and some other white utility. My only thought is that if I do, it's going to become a totally different deck entirely. But I'm gonna be honest: Supreme Verdict and Blood Baron of Vizkopa give me proverbial nightmares when I think about running this at the GP next month.

    Thoughts?

    Hey!

First off, congrats on Primer status. Smile

I just thought that I would mention a few cards I came across in my own browsing. I'm in the process of building a deck somewhat similar to the one in the OP, and literally just got done looking at every single red, white, and/or blue enchantment. And I found some that made me raise an eyebrow, if nothing else.

Spirit Mirror - I find this card interesting because it always throws out a blocker each turn. And, you can donate the mirror. AND if the opponent does some shenanigans with it, you can destroy it at will. I'm going to mull it over a little more.

Ice Cave - So, one of the main problems I see with the Enduring Ideal plan is that you can't play spells after you throw it down. That is, if I understand how Epic works. Which is a pretty all-in strategy. So when I was paging through cards, I was looking for enchantments that allow you to put your mana to good use even after you put it down. Ice Cave seemed like a decent choice (if your meta tends toward the r/w/u spectrum of things), as you turn extra mana into counters.

Being so limited may be a problem, but hey! I thought I'd throw it out there.

Knollspine Invocation kind of follows my thinking here. If you have extra cards, make 'em into burn and removal?

Shapeshifter's Marrow - I found this card to be interesting, albeit not particularly competitive? Personally I think I'm going to run it, but that's just because I like how interactive it is. For a casual game, it's bound to be a good time.

War Tax, Caverns of Despair, and Dissipation Field - MOAR PILLOWFORT!!

Impending Disaster and Planar Collapse - So, I feel like a jerk for suggesting the first card. A lottttt of people hate LD. Tutorable mass LD (in a multiplayer game) is just asking to become public enemy number one.

Planar Collapse seems like an interesting choice, though. If I'm not mistaken, if you have played Enduring Ideal and have Paradox Haze out, you could do something like...

First upkeep - 1st Enduring Ideal trigger --> Fetch Planar Collapse
Beginning of next upkeep -> Planar Collapse triggers (assuuming there's enough creatures), Wipe the board.
Enduring Ideal triggers -- > Lucent Liminid

And then next turn you can tutor for Eldrazi Consciption + Greater Auramancy?

Please correct me if I'm wrong because I'd probably attempt it otherwise. :p

Crucible of Fire and Where Ancients Tread - If you really really like the Dragon Roost gameplan, these two cards could probably go well with it. Pumps and direct damage for no extra mana? Yes please, all day erry day.

I also wanted to know your thoughts on In the Eye of Chaos and Invoke Prejudice. The former definitely seems playable, the latter maybe not so much. To me, at least.

And lastly, I stumbled across Energy Vortex, which to me seems pretty awesome. I am more than intrigued by it.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts, questions, concerns. I'd be glad to hear 'em.

EDIT: ALSO, I wanted to make a comment about Twincast and the like. The ability to get multiple EI triggers seems sooo powerful. What would you think about adding more cards akin to Twincast in the deck? I'm looking at stuff like Fork, Echo Mage, Increasing Vengeance, etc. etc.

I'm a pretty big fan of Ezuri, Renegade Leader. Elf themed tutors, big mana, internal overrun = just sick nasty.

Elf tribal is pretty beastly. Ezuri might be more suited for a 1v1 environment though. I'm not sure how he plays out on a 3+ person table.

Thanks man, I'm glad my Primer and Videos have been so helpful for you.

The absolute core is...well, each card is an essential role-player in the deck, so it can be very hard to pin-point a couple of specifics.

Do you want to dig around in the dirt more? If so, then cards like Animate Dead, Necromancy, Reanimate, and Dance of the Dead will prove absolutely essential, and are just too backbreaking in conjunction with a Sun Titan. I've heard some good things about Kokusho, the Evening Star, but I have not tested him yet (I did obtain a copy on MODO, however) so I cannot be sure that he is truly worthy of a slot -- it's dully noted however that creating a thirty point life swing spread out among three different players seems saucy, of course.

If it's 1v1, you can't go wrong with a Mind Twist, Iona, Shield of Emeria, Armageddon, and a Rakdos the Defiler. Cards like Duress, Inquisition of Kozilek, and Thoughtseize will prove their worth ten-fold here, but in multiplayer, they are very lacklustre.

If you have commanders like Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind, Arcum Dagsson, Ezuri, Renegade Leader, and Captain Sisay, then Linvala, Keeper of Silence will prove more than invaluable to you.

As for more of a generic core, bare with me because this is hard, but I think I would name Steel Hellkite, Bloodgift Demon, Rune-Scarred Demon, Rakdos the Defiler, Iona, Shield of Emeria, Angel of Despair, Yosei, the Morning Star Lightning Greaves and Hall of the Bandit Lord. As for your "supporting cast", don't leave home without your Swords to Plowshares, Demonic Tutor[/c], Terminate, and Return to Dust for sure. Sword of Light and Shadow is sure handy, but not what I would deem as absolutely required, however (as in, the deck will usually function just fine without it, but it has a plethora of additional uses that it can bring to the table too).

    Does this help you?

    Absolutely does.

I think that my meta could be considered somewhat casual, even though I know that this is a rather ambiguous term. I think (from off the top of my head), nobody really uses a "tier 1" general in my group. Namely, I remember Thraximundar, Rith, Momir Vig, Treva, Grimgrin and a couple others. I know that one guy has a Zur deck and another has a Rafiq deck, but I don't think they really play them as they get insta-hated on by 7+ people.

From what I'm planning, I think that I'm going to make a total of 3 decks (if I have the funds). I'm probably going to be making a Kaalia deck (1v1 orientated, with multiplayer option), a Xiahou Dun deck (multiplayer orientated), and a Zur deck (1v1, and because he is and always has been my favorite general, despite the hate).

One question, though. Have you thought about Seizan, Perverter of Truth? He fits the theme, and I think that in a multiplayer setting he is a good option.

Hey guys, not to interrupt but I wanted some advice. I'm getting back into Magic after selling out a few years ago (I used the money gained to take my ex-fiance on a vacation), and I'm looking at making an EDH collection as opposed to just ... er ... you know, buying cards. 1 of's are a lot easier to get than 4 of's.

Anyway, Kaalia is one of the generals that I have really peaked my interest. She just seems like a complete house, and just generally suited to my playstyle of combo/aggro (I'd say).

I'm going to be joining a group that plays all together in multiplayer games, and I wanted to ask you guys what you think the absolute core cards of this deck are? Like, what could you not do without?

Oh, and 3drinks. I read the primer and watched a couple of your videos on youtube. Kudos, man. They were all interesting. Smile

Wow, thanks a lot for sure timely responses guys. Smile Seriously, kudos.

Alright, so first to answer a few questions...

Are you looking at building anything else (modern, legacy, etc)? $1600 will get you a lot of product. You could probably build just about any mono-B deck you were after, as long as you don't want it foiled out or anything.

There's a group at my college who plays EDH once a week. So, besides playing with them, I also am thinking of playing T2 (is it called modern nowadays? Wow, leave for a year or two and things change). I figure in this way I can kind of have a good collection for EDH, and gradually work on a more substantial collection as time passes. Plus FNM is a blast, no?

I'd check out the Chainer, Dementia Master Primer if you want to play mono black commander. I love the deck, and it really utilizes Xiahou, you could basically run him as the commander there anyways.

I've actually taken a look at Chainer. While I think that he's really awesome, something just keeps pulling me back to Xiahou Dun. From a flavor standpoint (which, is somewhat important to me ... somewhat), he's just awesome.

Although for the sake of argument, I'll go and look at the primer and think about it more thoroughly.

I also loved playing Zur, the Enchanter, but (and I don't think I really have to say this but I will) he gets a lot of hate at the table. So I prefer something more innocuous and diplomatic.

How many EDH decks did you used to have? Atleast 4-5 im guessing, since you sold your last collection for 1800

At my peak, I ran about 4 or 5 decks. My favorites were Zur, Xiahou Dun, Rafiq, Intet, and Uril. None of them were fully tricked out, really. I had few gems, but many cards. I collected since I was about 10, so I had about 9 years worth of accumulation. I also had a generous donation to my collection from an older family friend.

how competitive do u plan on being? prob wont need to drop too much $$$ in a deck if u just casual. try getting the commander boxes to start off. ya they've gone up in price, but i still see them at the local store at a 'fair' price.

No too competitive. Even before I quit I was a pretty casual player. Smile Among my friends I could pull a win pretty easily. I'd consider myself kind of between casual and competitive, if that makes sense.

    welcome back!!

    Thanks!
    ----

Now, I wanted to talk about how I feel about revised duals.

I know that they're staples. Believe me, I do. However even when I was playing before, I didn't have but maybe two? And truth be told, I rarely missed them. I looked at Card Kingdom and Starcitygames, and some of those duals reach into the $120 range I've found.

If I was to buy one of each, that would be a substantial portion of what I have to spend. And in this instance I'm wondering if it would still be worth it. I'm a great trader, and have a track record of trading up pretty consistently. I'm sure that if I was able to establish some sort of collection I could probably trade for the ones that I needed.

    Thoughts?

    Hey guys,

I sold my collection a few years ago for about $1800. At the moment it was alright, because I did it to please my ex-fiance by using the money to take her on a nice vacation. But, like I mentioned, things didn't go too well, and we ended up breaking things off.

I have regretted selling my collection ever since.

So, I saved up my money, and I have amassed somewhat in the area of $1600 that I'm willing to sink back into the game, specifically, the EDH format as it was my favorite.

My challenge to you guys is to tell me how you would best spend it?

My only condition is that I am able to at least have one completed deck of the commander format. Chances are, I'd like it to be based off of Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed

    How would youstart my collection?

Thoughts on this? I can imagine there are going to be some comments about the Kor duelists, but I like them because equipped with anything in the deck they are just completely amazing.

My only thoughts are, in the u/w build, countermagic MD or SB. Personally, I used to play them MD but now I think I'm liking them more in the SB. On this thought especially, I'm really interested to hear what people have to say.

You know, the more I think about this deck, the more I feel like the W/u version would be better off as a midrange deck. As it is, it seems like it needs a little more 'omph', you know? I was thinking of maybe adding a duo of sun titans to the deck just for that. What are your thoughts on that? He recurs every one of our creatures, either letting them trigger again or letting us get another artifact dude for the Riddler. I think he might be a solid add, because I think it would work better as a midrange deck. I hate to say it.

    alternate win-con options:
    Quote from Albus Severus

    A. kor outfitter - stone forge mystic.
    B. painsmith
    C. 4 etched champion, 8 0cc artifacts and tempered steel?

Leaning towards C. in a UW build it was explosive last night! Like diarrhea! BIG Red could not handle it even with a rdw sb.

    ornithopter glint hawk.
    ridlesmith ornithopter memnite 18
    etched champion ornithopter 14
tempered steel U open for turn aside GG

opponent went mountain Goblin guide 18
    mountain everflowing chalice 16
    mountain koth 10

Hmm. C seems like a pretty decent option.

Also, I cooked up a decklist in class today when I was bored and the prof wasn't saying anything new.

Any thoughts on this? I'm thinking its pretty solid, but I could use some input.

I'm satisfied with that answer. lol

What about other forms of artifact distruction targeting the liquidmetal coating, though? With SoM somethings bound to pop out that runs some sort of maindeck artifact distruction. In that case reverberate or ricochet traps don't work for you.

I'm just playing devils advocate, lol. I honestly wanna hear what your thoughts are on this.

I know your not picking on me bro I appreciate the thoughtfulness of your answers and agree with you on quite a few of points. I actually quite enjoy your responses.

    Likewise.

Jace would be at the top of the curve. He is not necessary as in other u deck types so I would say brainstorm once if it dies it dies. He should give you the missing pieces to get our combo anyways. If not then nothing else will and your already #$%*ed at that point. Not the best logic but I think a uw deck needs him to be taken seriously.

In almost every other situation I prefer mana leak. Negate works here because our deck is faster than all permanent based decks out there.

is there another black card i overlooked that would fit in here? I can't justify WUB anymore if painsmith is the only black card.

Uhm, i would usually agree with jace but if he's only gonna get to brainstorm once and (most likely, jaces = removal magnets) die, then why not just play some more draw spells? That way you can draw + do more on your turn then just playing, in the worst scenario, a 2U brainstorm.

    Just my .02

Otherwise when it comes to mana leak vs. negate I agree with you. If I was to jump down off the fence I'd land on the negate side. In UGW polymorph I ran mana leaks but that's because it was better for slower midrange decks.

But wait, weren't we just determining we were gonna be that if we went WU over WW? A midrange deck, essentially?

And to be truthfull I haven't the faintest idea what i would run if i played black outside of painsmith. Nothing I could justify messing with the weakening the mana base. I'll look, but I can't say i'm hopeful. The only thing remotely B that I'm gonna play is nihil spellbomb.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I think the countermagic issue is probably bigger off than you make it out to be dude. What if someone is smart games 2 and 3 and counters your coatings? That's what's seems a good player would probably do, at least. What do you do instances when that happens? Cuz with R/G i almost guarantee it will happen.

    Edit: Maybe Nature's Spiral?
