Icefeather Aven single-handedly sold me on Temur. Amazing artwork that I want a foil of, great body, flexible ability. They need to show more non-Gruul Temur cards.

Outlast is actually my favorite ability of the bunch, since it's very Spike-y (it seems I'm slowly turning into a Timmy-Spike). Do I pump my creature and bring it over the top or keep it as a blocker, not to mention save mana for other spells? Both creatures spoiled so far are going to make for some exciting plays even when you only have one of them.

Prowess turns all your spells into combat tricks, so it feels very URW. None of the creatures are that exciting, but I like that they present your opponent with difficult choices. The Elder makes you choose between respecting it and letting through or blocking it and risking getting it pumped, the Aven simply flies, and the Double Dragons can get really ugly if you don't block them - even if they don't have any spells to pump them with! Prowess.dec is going to be difficult to build, but when someone does, it will be a thing of beauty.

Delve certainly takes its sweet time showing its strengths so far: I'd like to see a Delve spell that costs 2 or 3 mana, not 7 or 8. But because of that, I'm even more intrigued by what the Sultai have in store, especially since they're supposed to spend other resources, too. Something Channel/Phyrexian mana-like, maybe?

Raid is both straightforward and intricate in that you can always easily trigger it if you want to, but if they've got better board, you're going to lose attackers quickly, so those Raid effects better be worth the trouble. And so far, they feel like they do.

Ferocious makes me wonder why it isn't on Temur Ascendancy - after all, it cares about 4 power, as well. I can't wait for their own version of Woolly Thoctar, and wonder how blue fits into the picture. Maybe we can finally get huge Simic monsters we didn't get that many of in RTR.

Loving the Morph overlay, and I like getting Lifelink fatties with a discount. Hopefully more creatures are going to be like this than like Thousand Winds.

I'm leaning towards calling it fake, too. It's never a good sign when we have both the artwork and the name, and then the card just happens to be leaked on the usual blurry photo. That, and the card itself raises some eyebrows.

Apparently, answering the quiz as a rational human being lands you straight into Abzan. Not like I'm surprised, but I wish some of those answers didn't spell "YOU PICK THIS IF YOU WANT TO BE THAT CLAN" so loudly.

Temur stays very RG with no U in sight, so I'm getting very close to going Sultai rather than my favorite three-color combo. There's still time before the release, but it's hard to resist the clan of snake people and cool cat demons.

Oh come on, that was FAR FAR FAR from a "no". Thats as close he ever gets to saying "yep, you got it :)".

This was a firm no on un3. He did say it in a way that leaves no doubt, for normal people.

Also, you shouldn't exclude people that don't fit your argument to try and prove your point.

I can "exclude people" who are either crazy, or who are writing crazy arguments.

I don't really want to continue this argument, especially since your side ended up right, while my didn't, but I honestly don't feel it was that crazy to look deeper into his statement. When a person is invested in something very much, it takes a while for him to admit that the object of his investment is no more (I think the stages of grief are vaguely related to it). When someone wants an Un-3 announcement very much, considers the possibility of it over three days, finds no concrete reason to doubt it, and then gets shot down by the man himself, one can't simply drop the idea right there, and tries to twist the statement so it confirms the theory instead. It all feels natural from such point of view, even if people who never expected Un-3 can't see how MaRo's statement could be read as anything but dismissal.

Basically, I can see where both sides were coming from, and hope you can do the same.

Nope, wrong. This would qualify as a lie. Forget about your careful word-parsing, this would be directly, and obviously, a lie. Maro never does that, and the community would never forgive him for it.

Since a lot of people don't think it would be a lie, it probably isn't "directly and obviously" a lie.

His statement: "Man, I wish it was about Un-3 : ("

Those people are all obviously wrong and deluding themselves in their wish to see un3. This was a firm no from Maro.

Just like this post was a firm "No" for Conspiracy.

MaRo is a writer, he knows his way around words. If he wanted to deny the possibility of Un-3, he'd have said it in a way that leaves no doubt, like with GDS3. But he didn't, people still hope for Un-3, and I don't believe it's just because MaRo wasn't careful with his phrasing.

Also, you shouldn't exclude people that don't fit your argument to try and prove your point.

I don't understand the fascination with un sets. Aside from the nice looking lands they are useless and contribute almost nothing to constructed magic.

Because Magic is not just about Constructed play (or tournament play, for that matter).

Guess I'll just go and ask MaRo, myself.

    And GDS3 is out.

The more I think about it, I think we can also forget about Un3. It could happen someday, but it will not be announced Monday, Wizards is simply never going to undercut the hype of a Fall set like that.

Thing is, there is no way to announce Un-3 without undercutting whatever product is being in the focus right now. Doing it right before the Fall set might be the best idea simply because of the sheer amount of info we get right afterwards.

I vote for something about core sets or standard.
Core sets are becoming clunky and the whole end-of-standard-with-two-core-sets business is just weird.
Rotation comes too fast and a whole block going at once is just bad for later sets in block.
So by extending the rotation deadline, rotation is coming to fast, and by including the extra core set, it makes it weird?

You realize that rotation has been whole blocks since, like, a long time?

    Anyways, I'm calling Un-3.

Maro said it would not be un3 on blogatog

No he didn't, he said he wishes it was about Un-3, which is a fine wording to weasel around.

The date stamp on the card looks like it is only a single day, so I'm glad this is not a possible pre-release promo most likely and is instead the release event card.

Well yeah, it'd have to belong to one of the clans to be a prerelease promo.

This might be the most flavorful take on a throne in Magic so far - and it's in a set with no kings or kingdoms. Don't see it as fake, mostly because the artwork is new.

Forum doesn't want to give me clean quotes, so pardon the manual tags.

technically magic already has a sixth color (in an unset, known as pink).

It also had hazel, gray and other eye colors. On the other hand, they seriously considered adding the sixth color in Planar Chaos.

No, this is confirmation that Un-3 is not happening. MaRo never blatantly lies. He misinforms us unintentionally from time to time (usually through outdated information), but I really doubt he would be out of touch with whatever news he has for us next week.

The announcement being about Un-3 would not contradict "Man, I wish it was about Un-3". Considering the context of a humorous set, I wouldn't even consider it a lie, though the line between a lie and a joke is indeed pretty thin. And I would certainly prefer something no one called over something that's on everyone's mind, like Un-3.

Depending on your point of view, this post have either confirmed or de-confirmed the Un-3 announcement. And honestly, I'm leaning towards the former.

There are basically four points to consider while discussing this matter.
    1) It's an article written by MaRo. Not only is he the lead designer of Magic, but he's also the face of Magic, the color pie guru, the historian of the game, the Un-set enthusiast, a banana hater, and so on. There must be a reason he's the one who's dishing out the goods rather than, say, Aaron Forsythe.
    2) It's the weekly column, not an Arcana or a feature article. Making Magic is usually about, well, making Magic, but it's sometimes used just as a platform for MaRo to talk about anything he wants to. But since he expects every member of Magic community to be talking about it, I'd say it's probably related to Magic's very core.
    3) It's bigger than anything else he's ever announced before. Remember the article about Lorwyn-Shadowmoor block structure? How about the M10 core set revamp? Did he preview those articles with "Every single one of you is going to be discussing this for days?". I believe he didn't. Now, mind you, everything he says causes some waves over the social networks, but there must be a reason for him to stress it even further than usual. That, or he's just exaggerating.
    4) It's something that they don't want to reveal after KTK's release. The most obvious reason I see is that they're afraid of this announcement drawing all the attention from KTK - if it really is as huge as MaRo implies it to be, I wouldn't be surprised if it's even bigger than the first set in a brand-new block. Then again, the same can happen even if they announce it before the previews, but at least we get three to four weeks for it to be overshadowed by the new cards and world info. It might also be something that they want us to know about KTK before we get to see the main bulk of info, but why do it in a weekly column rather than at a con or in an announcement?

And because of all those points, I'm thinking that Un-3 is the most likely case here. If it isn't, I hope it's something bigger than GDS3 or MM2, something that no one could ever predict.

It's absolutely no surprise that the clan mechanics we're seeing are as simple as they are. Khans of Tarkir is going to be a dense, complex set, and part of a dense, complex block. Trying to pack more depth and complexity into the individual keywords is just asking for trouble. Don't look at these keywords in isolation; that's not how they were designed and not how they will be played. Simple pieces exist in the context of a larger whole juggling many different elements.

Looking at Prowess specifically: Why does it not have a variable? It didn't need one. Just like Unleash, Evolve, Exalted, and other similarly templated mechanics, the depth of the mechanic doesn't necessitate it. Yes, you lose the opportunity for "Prowess 2" and so forth. That is giving something up. But what you gain is the streamlining of a mechanic that is living in a densely packed environment. You don't need to remember which of Jeskai's creatures have different sized Prowess bonuses; Prowess means the same thing on each card it's printed on. Understanding and evaluation is streamlined and smoothed. Why is it a keyword and not an ability word like Heroic? Again, it doesn't need it. Heroic was one of the central mechanics of its entire block, it needed enough space and depth to carry a lot of different designs across three different sets, in all colors. Prowess appears in only three colors, will likely only exist in this set or this and the shared small set, and shares space with (at least) five other mechanics. It's not going to be explored as deeply as Heroic was, so it doesn't need to be as flexibly templated. It is designed and templated to fulfill the job it was designed to do, without anything superfluously added.

I wanted to write pretty much exactly the same thing, so let me just agree with this and repost it from time to time as the block goes on.

My trip to Japan is as close as ever (I take off on this Sunday), and I'm starting to feel that I need some more specific plans for it. So hey, if anyone got any advice on various things an otaku can do in Tokyo, do share them. And yes, I am going to visit Akiba and Comiket.

(I hope Stuffs sees this post while I'm still here...)

Can I be friends with you guys?!

    But of course!

    Hello
I used to be an avid MTG player who is now returning. I remember seeing you guys back a year or two ago , when I was with the Izzet clan and I decided to give this page a check. Good to see you guys are still in business.

Needless to say I would like to join. If there is one word that describes me it would be "otaku".
So a little bout myself to break the ice.

    My name:
My real name is Mike, but I would prefer to be called Lethal or Rayne.

    Why am I here:
    Anime is my religion.

    Favourite animes:

    1. Madoka Magica
    2. Outbreak Company
    3. Dangan Ronpa
    4. Akame Ga Kill
    5. Majutsu no Index / Railgun
    6. No Game No Life
    7. Date A Live
    8. CLANNAD
    9. Steins;Gate
    10. Log Horizon

Hello and welcome! Nice to see people still joining our ranks despite a relative lack of large-scale activity.

I've been thinking of moving to a new thread, though that's probably not happening until I come back. In the meantime, feel free to post silly anime cliches as ideas for the new thread title. My current idea is "It can't be helped. [MTGS Brigade] will have to use THAT!".

Even though I'm a URG player through and through, it seems that the clan has much more Gruul than Simic or Izzet in it, so I'm a bit disappointed for now. If everything goes wrong, I can still go GUB and become a Sidisi fan.

Well, they're certainly not going to be Izzet since the clans are all about their main colours (in this case green) and we've seen nothing so far to suggest they aren't strongly UG. Those colours aren't just about evolution vats and sharkcrabfrogpeople.

I know that much, but I just don't see anything blue so far. Blue is about seeking knowledge and perfection, and neither of those are really associated with savagery or bear-punching. On the other hand, we've barely scratched the surface of the world's setting, so I'm not going to jump to conclusions here, however important first impressions might be.

Stinky, as I posted earlier, just like the Shards of Alara were designed by what colors of mana are missing from the Shard, so too are the Clans of Tarkir.

Abzan values Endurance, as you point out. That means that they don't have Blue or Red mana, which are the subtlest colors in Magic (and, BTW, the least amount of Endurance).

You can see this with all of the Clans/Wedges.

Red is about as subtle as a rock. Black is much more sneaky, it's just that UR is about crazy wacky shenanigans (which don't have to be subtle at all).

Also, Alara was designed around the lack of colors because it's literally what the block's story was about. We still don't know how the clans got their colors, but I have a strong hunch that it's going to be explained later in the block. In any case, saying that they're defined by what colors they aren't makes about as much sense as saying that Orzhov are defined by the lack of blue, red and green.
