May 2, 2018Gerrard's Mom posted a message on All Sets Are Good: Legendshyalapterouslemur broke the mechanics down well, but interestingly, the flaws we might find with Legends are almost all due to the incredible shifts in game literacy and game design theory that we have seen in the decades since this set came out. There are many cards here that are not fun because they slow down play, hose really specific strategies, or seem cool but are not efficient enough to play in most formats. Many cards break the current color pie and there are not really any cohesive themes that make the cards play together in fun ways as a set. Sure it's a bit of a fallacy, but it's totally valid to look back and say this set was all over the place if we accept a modern design standpoint.Posted in: Articles
Nobody is denying that there are powerful cards, flavorful cards, or design innovations that had a big impact on sets to come - this article is talking about what is good about the set, after all. In the spirit of this article series, please feel free to share what you love about Legends, but recognize that the article's point is not to say that Legends is "bad".
Anyway, I'd say Born of the Gods is probably your next best bet for sets people like to dump on. Maybe Dragon's Maze. -

Top 5 - Metamorphic Origin
Time passes, and things change. Though things had seemed constant for many years, a metamorphosis meant that the heroes would see more worlds, albeit in briefer glimpses. The very core of what they had known would be lost, but this would be an opportunity to reflect on the origins of their fellow planeswalkers, following the transformations in their lives that came about through the spark. And as timelines twisted, creatures with the power to change forms showed that change itself could change over time. With hindsight, we can tell that some of these monumental changes would proceed, while others would be reversed. What have the gathered heroes learned from the changes in their own histories?

This is a great way to build on experience and give a boost to the commanders that use it. It merges so well with flashback.
Subject16
Neat references to Ugin-related stuff. Flashback is thematically great for his character, maybe a more interesting flashback cost involving the manifests would be cool.
Eventide Sojourner
Seems a bit on the cheap side but there's a fun churn through lands there. I don't think the offer's drawback is strong enough - ramping you one is a small price to pay for drawing 4+ cards.
Artorias
I'm not sure if this is more elegant, or if it's more interesting to have the life gain be varied for each player, like highest power among creatures they control. The flashback doesn't add much here.
Cardz5000
I wish there was a sweet flavor treatment to show why everyone has to take the offer the second time. It's a bit confusing to read but I think it would play pretty fun and it seems balanced.
IcariiFA
It looks really flexible but it's pretty swingy. Without having built up a lot of experience, it's really bad - you have to pay 8 mana to get a couple tokens or pumps. That said, it could be pretty good later on in a Daxos deck when you double your experience twice.

Really interesting stuff going on here. I like how you can get rid of it if your commander is out of commission for a while, but it encourages you to try to get the commander out and get synergizing.
netn10
Wow flashback to force someone to cast the spell is innovative. It seems like this is basically not flashback but a different ability though, and the parts are slightly awkward.
Algernone25
Mage tribal is flavorfully cool and the effect is nice. It aesthetically scales well as something you might want to do before your commander comes out followed by a more powerful effect with the commamnder.
Hemlock
The flashback cost is certainly within white's pie but it kind of feels bad that I can't myriad out all my creatures when I use this the second time.
kwanyeegor
This is a cool effect but undaunted and flashback don't particularly add to it as far as I can see, and the color swap is doable but I'm not sure why it's happening from a flavor sense.
Jimmy Groove
This is also fine but doesn't seem to take much advantage of the mechanics.

Round 2 - Flashback to Reality
The heroes have gathered from across time. Some old friends greet one another fondly, while others recall past slights and trade insults or even nearly come to blows. In the ethereal space around them, years play out in moments. The heroes recall planes they may have traveled through themselves in the years following the original call - a fairytale land caught between day and night, shards of worlds forced into convergence, a wild plane faced with an ineffable threat, and a pristine metal world corrupted beyond recognition. A master of temporal manipulation appears, reminding the assembled of their first visit to a plane of monsters and darkness. Around the same time that this mage first appeared, helping the heroes remember their past with a magical skill that was itself drawn from the distant past, new heroes had also first appeared, commanders for a new generation. To face what comes ahead, the heroes will need to recall the legacy of these pioneers.
Challenge:
Create a spell with both flashback and one of the following mechanics introduced in the Commander series. Stay within the color identity of your Round 1 card.
Deadline:
Tuesday, June 11th, 11:59PM Pacific
Critiques until Thursday, June 13th, 11:59PM Pacific
We'll do a top 8 cut after critiques. Make sure to get your critiques in for Round 1!
Round 1 - Ith This The Real Life
In the face of impending doom, heroes gather.
For over twelve long years, these heroes have heeded a call. A call that reaches deep within their hearts and minds, bringing forth powerful spells from a thousand worlds. They have journeyed across planes, overcome great challenges, and battled one another for a place in the annals of history.
Although they look forward to a new home, a promise from the void, the only certain thing is that they must say goodbye to their current home.
For this final gathering, each hero must call forth a commander from across time and space. Ancient ideas have appeared again over the horizons, giving rise to new forms. As they have often done, each hero will begin their final journey here with a legend, and at the same time respond to the call that first brought them together.
Challenge:
Create a legendary creature with suspend.
Deadline:
Wednesday, June 5th, 11:59PM Pacific (shooting to begin Round 2 and start critiques around this day)
I understand that not everyone cares about leaks, I just want the information and discussion on this site to continue to be usable for those who do.
Sorry can't pull the image on my phone but I guess this is a Japan-only promo version of Cast Down that will be included in Corocoro Aniki magazine. Art by Ittoku.
Liliana is saying something about how people worry about being remembered after they die, but not to worry because death belongs to the nameless. As long as you have a name, bear it proudly!
Scryfall has the card image up already, here you go.
Just some notes but almost 2 of 3 abilities on Serra, from last May.
Not very close on Windgrace but I guess his ultimate is in the vein of "creatures destroy artifacts". I would have made him Mardu colors anyway.
Can't wait for Daria to come out
As is this just seems like Gideon looking for the Blackblade.
