posted a message on [[BNG]] Intro Pack Decklists
    Quote from Crimson
I wonder if they even make a profit with Intro Packs. They're so BAD.

Surely, they must be turning a profit or they would change the formula!
    Quote from Modest Ohmu
Whether the card will actually make much of a splash or not, they are hyping it as the new Bob. Putting it in one of these would probably mean they sell alot less boxes off the bat. Why crack packs for your chase rares when theyre in the intro deck? This would also mean the intro pack that had it would be stupid money, potentially like Rats Nest (had umezawa's jitte). Again, thats assuming Pain Seer is as good as the hype (which I dont think it will be..)

That would have been cool though, I wish we saw more powerful cards in these, but that never seems to happen

A very insightful opinion with that good old exemplar "Rats Nest".

Does everyone recall how none of the BOK decks sold, but people would hoard "Rats Nest" and then resell it at, like, 2 to as high as 10 times its original price? That was a pretty dark period in the secondary market as well as in Magic.
    Quote from Master Moja
The thing is though; Wizards doesn't need to put bad cards in them just to sell them to casual and new players. They could make them moderately good, like the RG one I guess, and then have them appeal to both players who want to start into magic and players who want to get a couple of good commons, uncommons, and rares.
Yeah. I guess they don't have to put so much rubbish in these intro decks; I feel that Wizards are even cheating newbies.

I think that even more of a catch all is: "If you appropriate imagery, do it by hand, and cite your sources. Do not scan/photograph someone else's work and then mechanically reproduce it."

You're either intentionally missing the point or not, eh. Muh

    Shrugs

Eh, no one is going to sue fan artists or alterists.

posted a message on Looking for Youtube resources
    Quote from Nai
Specifically, I'm at a point where I'm actually considering monetizing my youtube channel. I've got a reasonable number of suscribers and views per day, I know of a number of games I can get permission to Let's Play, review, or otherwise work with, and I'd be interested in making a few dollars simply to buy the next game.

That said, I'm unsure of what the partnership would entail, if I'm ready for it, and the hurdles that would come next.

Anyone here already partnered up? Do you know of any websites or forums that I may be able to snag some advice and assistance?

I don't want to dissuade you from this if it is your passion, but the reason why I didn't reply earlier was that it is simply not very practical, due to the plethora of other YTers offering similar content in a similar manner. It is somewhat of a pipe dream. However, let's, for the sake of the thread, discuss it anyway.

For starters, becoming a YT Partner is difficult. Before you set out on becoming one, do familiarize yourself with the terms of the program and do some more research into it.

Actually, this guy discusses becoming and being a Partner rather well.

I don't know if this is up your alley, particularly with this confusion in posts #3-5.

By the by, Let's Play videos are also seen as highly unoriginal and irritating and, as Sapphire said, 'a dime a dozen'; Google even suggests that they are stupid, and that's based on people entering that into it. In addition to that, they are are legally gray and Google has been taking them down and suspending users that upload them.

To be totally clear, consider something completely original and do some research into media and IP law or consult a professional.

    This.

I've found Facebook to be useful for two things:

    1. Keeping up with groups/organizations you belong to/support;

    and

    2. Keeping "in touch" with people without actually having to communicate with them.

The second is why I've come to call it Fakebook.

The 'c' is a hard C; it is only spelled 'Facebook' for historic reasons. Smile

I guess I have to check her account the next time we meet since my settings isn't that really restrictive

Sorry, what? Wow, she lets you use her phone and to use Facebook while she is logged in. That is trust. Kudos, man.

Look, whatever the case with you guys being unable to see each other's profiles, if you value your friendship and how easy it is, don't add each other on Facebook. You already have phones, e-mails and all that stuff at your disposal and there's no need to add yet another dimension that all too often leads to complications and complacency.

Heck, don't even use Facebook unless it is utterly necessary.

    Quote from soebek
You have forgotten your mythology. Romulus and Remus were most certainly Italian, if not Roman (as Rome didn't exist). Their mother was the daughter of the king of Alba Longa (a kingdom in Italy); when her brother seized power they were cast out, only to be found and raised by wolves.

And if you want to go even further back, the Romans believed that they were descendents of Aenied, who fled Troy (on modern day Turkey) after its fall rather than the mainland Greeks.

It's a Roman myth, and nothing to do with Greek mythology. It's hardly a big deal, but it's a bit of shame given Wizards have been very good so far in not getting the two confused. They've explicitly said they wanted to avoid Roman mythology, because there's enough flavour in Greek mythology alone that they don't need to add the former (and it means they can save it for its own block at a later date).

Due respect, but this could not be more incorrect with regard to the small things as well as the big things and, in some places, irrelevant.

    • Italy and the Italian identity were not in existence then. Then, there were Italic tribes, the Greeks, and Etruscans. All of these flourished until the rise of Rome and, later, its empire. Italy itself was not a unified country until the 19th C, and the Italian ethnic and cultural character wasn't really shaped until much after the establishment of the K. of Italy. (Similarly, while this could be rather pedantic, one who is of 'German' descent prior to the unification of Germany but not the fruit of the loins of any recent German ancestors would more aptly describe him- or herself as being of Bavarian, Prussian, or whatever descent.)
    • Roman identity was not in existence then either.
    • Romulus and Remus were purportedly descendants of Aeneas, the titular character of Virgil's Aeneid and thus of partial Trojan ethnicity. However, in those times, ethnicity did not refer to the same concept as it does nowadays. More importantly was one's hometown and parentage, as reflected in their names with their clan/gen names.
    • Indeed, R&R are said to have been the children of former Vestal Virgin Rhea Silvia, who was a descendant of Numitor, King of Alba Longa and a descendant Aeneas, and the god Mars.
    • R&R were reared by one she-wolf (Lupa) and a woodpecker (Picus), both of which were sacred to Mars himself; Picus, in fact, attended Mars. They were then found by a shepherd who adopted and raised them with his wife.
    • Troy being part of modern-day Turkey is absolutely irrelevant, except to provide some idea of where it is. However, it would be incorrect to state this to imply that Trojan culture is remotely similar to Turkish culture (which spans thousands of years and encompasses prehistoric Anatolia and Thrace, classical A&T, Eastern Roman Empire, the Selçuk, the Turkmen, Ottomans, post-WWI Turkey).
    • Obviously, being one foundation myth for the Romans, this is a big deal in Roman mythology; however, this is part of Greek mythology as well (and, really, the two overlap considerably anyway and co-opt myths and so on from each other). It simply isn't as significant there, though.
Correct me if anything is wrong or you know better. I haven't seriously studied Roman and Greek mythology since Fifth and Sixth Form (aged 8/9? Jesus, it's been so long), though I later did Latin and Greek. Cheers. Smile

    • Now, although Rosewater has said, "It [Theros] is Greek inspired and not Greco-Roman inspired. I explain week one of my previews" [Tumblr], he has previous stated "It's more Greek than Greco-Roman but as it’s influenced by pop culture’s take on Greek mythology, a little Roman sneaks in" [Tumblr]. Take what you will from this, but I take it as they don't exactly have it all together. How sloppy. Slant
    • With the one of the more recent Tumblr posts, "Guy:Isn't Raised by Wolves the Roman Genesis story (Remus and Romulus)? Rosewater: It is. After preview weeks, I have a two-part card-by-card set of columns and I talk about it in that.", really, they need to get their story straight!
Raised by Wolves is vaguely inspired by the myth of R&R. To be faithful and do justice to the myth, either the card should produce one Wolf creature token and that's it or the card produces one Wolf and one Bird creature token.

An ok, if not good, card but really poor effort.

Perverted mythology and inconsistency about the theme of the block. Nice. Cool

Initially, Theros block was said to be mostly Greek, with some Roman mythological or cultural aspects, or essentially Graeco-Roman. Now, Mark Rosewater is stating that it is Greek-only.

Indeed, Romulus and Remus appear in Greek mythology as well, but they, understandably, aren't a big deal there. However, the card's design isn't consistent with the myth. If this is a bona fide allusion to R&R, then only one Wolf token should be created; there was, after all, only one she-wolf!

posted a message on [[BaseSpec]] I think BNG and Theros are Probably the WORST Sets in History
You are entitled to your own evaluation and the thought that Theros and Born of the Gods are probably the worse sets in history, sure, but...

Holy Crap Spoilers ive seen ... so many crappy rares and mythics, uncommons are good enough for standard, but its all

Only Elspeth PW and Thoughtseize are really GOD cards, and the last one its a reprint from a modern staple

I feel fooled by Wotc, i want my money back Thumbs Down
Is this will be or are the worse sets?

Anyway, how long have you been playing Magic? By what you're saying and how you're saying it, I get the impression that you haven't played or followed for long and you're not that old either.

Some of the older people here will know of an expansion called Homelands (I followed the game since 6 Ed. but played from Masques/Invasion and stopped a few years after). I am not being hyperbolic when I say this: nothing can be worse than that. Look it up and you will understand why.

    Quote from IcecreamMan80
Yay! Another violent crime happens, and the focus goes right to WE NEED GUN CONTROL ERHMAHGAWD!

    ...

If only the government had the guts to stand up to Anheuser-Busch and all those alcoholic beer chugging lunatics!

Bloody bonkers! We need more car control, or alcohol control!

No thanks, I'll keep my second amendment. I have never even drawn any of my guns on another human being. I hope that I never have to. But you know what they say, better to have one and not need it than need one and not have it.

Are you serious? I am asking because you do not seem to be expressing yourself very reasonably or rationally. I feel like utterly stupid for taking you, well, seriously.

An individual who fails to play fair and by what are very sensible rules loses his or her liberty and his or her driver's licence. Similarly, gun control laws - and, yeah, no law will be perfect - aims to adversely affect those do not play well with others.

It's not at all analogous to suggest that a car or alcohol is like a gun (comparing the makes, models, and features of and purposes of alcohol, cars, and guns, really?) and it is, but for misinterpretation of the text, completely unreasonable to presume that the 2nd Amendment permits people to possess guns. However, regardless of what lawyers and law-makers believe, there is too much momentum in favour of guns to effect any change. So be it.

Anyway, this is beside the point of this thread and you know it.

For the record, are you some sort of constitutional law expert?
    Quote from Rust Golem
If you're a politician running in a district or state with any amount of rural religious conservatives, being seen as anti-2nd Amendment will mean the end of your career. Hence why we have so many southern and rural Democrats who are staunchly pro-gun. And why every politician during a campaign has a picture taken at the rifle range, carrying some ridiculous rifle one of their aides passed them and trying not to look like an idiot.

It's really unfortunate but I don't think it will ever change.

    Jesus.

So, then, will there be a day when this is no longer shocking and we no longer discuss people - random people or known people (or their singular counterparts) - being shot?

If not, why the damn hell won't things change? What's up with the culture where the gun is supreme?
    Quote from god of cyanide
9909, THIS is one of the reasons we can't even start the discussion in the US. As soon as someone hints at the prospect of regulating guns even a little bit over the current mess of state regulations, the pro-gun crowd acts like that person wants to take every single gun away, even if that's not remotely near that person's actual stand on guns.
    Oh, my question was answered.

    Thanks, goc. Smile

    Thanks, BS.

It's cracked.com, so do you seriously expect me to click on the link?

From what I got from the URL, there are six (and six things only) things that gun lovers and gun haters can agree on. What could that be? Agreeing to disagree isn't even something that can be agreed upon.
