You get whatever you need for the situation. If you can't protect Karn and its going to die, get something that will have an impact otherwise. That's why I have a mindslaver, wurmcoil, oblivion stone, ballista and stuff like that as 1of in the SB. To not be laser focused on the locked. I find the lock happens more often against slower decks like take turns and control decks. They have few or no creatures.

That's also why I have 2 ballista main and 1 side, I tried 3 main and sometimes I couldn't find it in time in some matchups.

Jace still digs 3 deep and when you fetches it adds up to the number of cards you can see with him. I would agree with jayjayhooks, 3tef is too many and 1 Jace for starters. In UW I personnaly do 3 narset, 2 jace, 2 tef right now. I don't realy see a point to small teferi right now. Doing a sweeper at instant speed is fun but is never what makes or break my game. In my meta the hosing potential of narset against the decks I play against is a lot more useful than 1card + bounce then nothing relevant until I can do the bounce/draw again. Narset is 2 card out of 8 cards seen in 2 turns. I like that.

The point is not that Eldrazi's are good or not against mill. Its who the hell play's mill in any competitive environment and why would you spend a sideboard slot for it when you only have 15.

In a local meta or mtg, fair game I guess since those have weird metas sometimes, hehehe.

Wall is pretty good if you need more cantrips and a way to hold aggro or if you are more midrange.

I agree that maybe fetching a snow basic instead of a shock first turn to deal with a creature might be a problem. I just think its the most interesting in the new possible options. Very possible oust or condemn are still just better.

I won't touch Generous Gift personally. It sounds like a terrible idea to spend a card on a permanent and give them a creature to kill me with then have to kill that creature before it actually kills me. I am not sure how many cards all that requires, but it seems like a lot that I don't want to waste. Instant part isn't worth all that. I would rather find a sideboard card for the actual problem instead of a generic one that creates another.

We have path, on thin ice, oust, condemn and more for creatures.
We have field of ruin for problematic lands.
We have detention sphere and counterspells, teferi bounce for nonland permanents.

If something goes through, well tough *****, it happens.

I personnaly don't like angel much anymore. I play myr battlesphere instead now in its place. Same cost, faster beats. I would be willing to change it since Im not convinced yet. I don't play the deck enough right now to talk about it more than as an idea to try.

The part the saddens me is some people are trying to justify this. Like I said somewhere else ... its like validating mediocrity. Why be "ok" with cards like foil tokens (bad imo) or foil ruinous path (ok I guess) that will never see play outside of standard or some random commander deck because you need both hero's downfall and that one.

No ... lets continue aiming for the lowest grade reward possible instead of trying to shoot for the stars. Wizards doesn't have to spend a penny more to do stuff like Aether Hub foil (I love this one), foil fatal push, foil path to exile, foil serum vision, foil lightning bolt for god's sake cause why not? Its an overpriced common/uncommon and it would be a real price to work for and try to win.

edit: I have read some of the explanation on the mothership/reddit and I understand the whole thing a bit better but it just makes me think I might have to stop standard or more (will have to see) because I work on weekends. I can only play in store on thursday or friday night. I can't play showdowns where it seems it would be somewhat competitive vs fnm that seems to be aimed at "interested" players.

I still find it odd that to substract a part of their player base (engaged players/competitive) from FNM and hope they move to showdowns, they go as far as to offer lower grade prices while still hoping its enough to attract "interested/more casual" players. I guess there is no other way to do it.

@JonInWherever I don't like hour of glory maindeck. We have no data about the number of gods that will be played yet. I also don't like your pull from tomorrow/glimmer numbers with 3 gearhulk. You should at the very least reverse those I think. Imo I would do 4 glimmer 1 pull.

Also, I understand the gods are hard to get rid of but what is it doing in your deck? You won't have a lot of zombies and you won't have anything to exile. So I think you should start with 4 GH it is a tried and true value in a new meta and 1 god.

Everything else is pretty good I think.

To my previous list, the more I think about it the more I think port town might be better than prairie stream because the cycle lands have types.

Also, after watching the video of Micheal Major on UW Drake Haven vs Todd Mardu Vehicle, I think the correct number of Drake Haven might be 3 instead of 4 even more than yesterday. Now I just need to get my cards from the mail and actually playtest.

I agree on the Disallows, I still need to buy them dunno why I am so reluctant to pay 7$ (CAD) each.

So far the list I want to try is Esper. Although the black is only for Ifnir. I don't use black removal because of the double black taxe in everything (murder, grasp). I just have a hard time cutting the demon to be UW because its acts as a board whipe and wincon without having to do anything special. I am still missing a lot of cards to actually test it. I also think you need more than one drake haven in the deck. 3 might be better than 4 but gotta test the playset at first imo.

Sorry Im not sure I understood your last sentence about the acceleration. You mean increased winrate by cutting them or keeping just those as is without adding more? Either way, Ill keep practicing and try Worship. It looks fun in my meta, not a huge amount of removal.

In particular Merfolk and Tron. I either died too fast (islandwalk is rough) or they "combo" me with Tron. Im currently trying to figure out how to improve this. I guess not drawing the hate didn't help either. Other than that, my meta is agressive (infect, affinity), UB Mill or janky random brews.

My mana base is missing some misty rainforests, otherwise its close to CalebD list and I would say I never had any color problems.

If I try to add 2 birds or 2 walls, what should I cut? Maybe 2 Phantasmal images?

Im a bit confused about bant spirits. There are a lot of 3 drops in the deck (not even counting CC) and I rarely get Noble in my starting hand (I mean, 4 accelerant is not a lot) should I mulligan more? What's the points if I am often stuck at 3 mana? The last 2 fnm I played was a similar experience. I always feel to slow or don't have enough answers to what is happening. That's why unless I just don't get it, I might try UW. At least I might have more counterspells/interactions and feel less naked.

What does this have to do with the fact that Soring has best synergy with Lingering Tokens (multiple and efficient/cheap creatures)? Merfolk, Suicide Zoo and Eldrazi was mentioned, for which it is assumed the meta to face is aggro heavy. Therefore 4 Lingering Souls is needed in my oppinion. Yeah you can surely run sorin with 3 copies of Lingering souls, but the meta has to be right for that. Different metas require different card selection, I count towards the people who cant stress this issue often enough.

You're blocking islandwalk creatures with souls? or Temur-Battlerage-ed Death's shadow? I've never run 4x of that card (or Lili for that matter in any BGx I've played) and haven't felt like I missed the 4th copy. Yesterday I had one in hand against burn and got wrecked. I much rather have had anything that gains life.

And Ben Rubin made it to a GP Finals with a 64 cards deck once ...

You're blocking more creatures if islandwalk or temur battle rage are not in the equation, you're gaining time to draw your other answers and to reach your 4th-5th land drops, I drew Tarmogoyf instead of my lifegain vs burn and lost yet I won't state that I'd cut goyfs down to three.

Anyway consensus is that 4 Souls is the right number in this deck for aggro matchups, control and the mirror, the card has proven it strength already and there's no debate around it, as far I as read it still has the best synergy with Sorin/Vault of the Archangel, IMO only Bitterblossom is more synergistic with sorin.

I completely agree. Can't say more really, Sorin is best when run along 4 Souls in Abzan, and we don't have to argue that Souls is our best card against aggro and probably the best card in Abzan as well. It has often been stated that Lingering Souls is actually the reason to run Abzan in the first place.

@Draken: If running 3 Souls work for you its completely fine, like I said, certain metas require certain tweaks to the decks. But by saying that you lost to burn because you had lingering souls in hand is like saying I lost to burn because I kept drawing lands and eventually died through that. So according to your argumentation I shouldn't play lands then? This is not an argument against Lingering Souls to be honest.
And for the merfolk/suicide zoo case, what would have helped Siege Rhino #4 in that situation? (Note that I suggested to swap the fourth Siege Rhino for Souls for example) I bet overall, over time and over many games Souls would perform better against these decks than Siege Rhino. I clearly don't know what you are you trying to tell through all this, if you simply don't like Souls its ok, everyone has one's own playstyle.

I don't hate the card. I like it quite a bit. I just don't see the need to blindly play 4x all the time just "because it is the consensus." 3 has always felt right and the above poster shouldn't be told "anything less than 4 is incorrect" becuause, for some people, it is. 4 copies may be more popular but people do have success with 3x

    And @Aliyuss
Certainly you can't say Souls is the only reason to play Junk>Jund. Yes it is a fantastic card, but path gives Junk a better way to deal with things like Wurmcoil, for example. The addition of white SB is also a reason to play this style deck.

If you play Junk to have Path against threat like Wurmcoil, imo, you are on the wrong path (lul). Junk is still very very bad against Tron.

I had the chronicles but I don't like white border when I can avoid it so I use the BB Antiquities now. I use the same art for each playsets. I use the pulley for mine, shore for tower, sphere for power plant and sunset islands from mirage Smile love it so much. I also have some of the other tron lands BB Antiquities (like bug power plant, etc) but those are the ones in the deck. When I only need 2-3 basics in my decks Ill use unhinged; more than that and Ill try to find some older cool arts like Mirage, Onslaught, Odyssey.
