So I live in Louisville and I'm playing in the Open next weekend. There are some other Modern decks I like that I feel are strong, like Storm and Living End, but I don't have the in person reps and time spent against a variety of decks for them like I do w/Burn, so I'm in default mode. That's ok, I win store credit basically every week w/my Legacy Burn deck too, so I'm fine being The Burn Guy
The above list was my starting point, but I haven't been able to get out for Modern in awhile and my SB isn't updated really. Last time I had touched the board was shortly after Vegas when Affinity was on a severe rise for several weeks. It's a good default board and heavy on things like D Rev and Smash due to the increases in things like Chalice in the format, plus all of Affinity. Electrickery kills most of Affinity, is a great defensive answer to Storm going the Empty route, also serves as an offensive plan against Lingering Souls decks.
So I started iterating on sideboards and while I'm paying close attention to all the decks at the top of the standings, I'm also trying to keep in mind that the first several rounds could well be random jank from left field. I opened up a spreadsheet and picked out 11 different decks that I figured would be things I would see over the course of a major 2 day event and came up w/SB plans for them all. Storm, Grixis Death Shadow, Scapeshift, Affinity, E Tron, Abzan, Jund, Jeskai Geist, Merfolk, Devoted Company, Elves.
Here is how my iterations went as I kind of explored how to change things up.
RIP teams w/Cage for a more focused GY hate and Fallout is just extra board wipes against things like Elves or Chord decks. Gets most of Affinity, which if it kills enough could also get the Etched Champion, but entirely likely it remains on the board.
Decided that Mindbreak Trap won't be that great and replaced w/2 Palm and 1 Lavamancer.
Thoughts? Am I on the right track? Going way too far down the rabbit hole? Only probably going to get FNM next week as in person testing prior to the event next weekend, but I'm comfortable walking in and playing no problem, but I'd like to solidify my SB plans against decks.
No biggie. Duress, Opt, Spell Pierce, Lightning Strike. Lots of interesting reprints in this set so far.
I have a dream of a Goblin Guide reprint. Goblin standing on a ship's prow in a downpour. Holding a lantern, pointing off the ship and shouting excitedly. Birds of Paradise would also fit very well w/the setting.
I want to believe that 3 damage + cantrip would cost less than 7 these days: Ember Shot, but 3 damage + scry 1 went from 4 (Lightning Javelin) to 3 (Bolt of Keranos), so I kind of doubt it.
Javelin came after Theros was printed. Frequently when they are shifting a card between more heavily colored mana and less colored, 2 generic is seen as about the same as 1 of color. So 1RR is equivalent to 3R in that way. Strike being back in standard has me unreasonably excited.
And this is coming from someone who owns a playset of Tarns in paper
I just finished buying a playset of Tarns over the last couple of months. The pain is real, but if the deck is more consistent w/the non-fetch plan, awesome. Caleb has a good writeup of the deck that he posted on the 11th, only change between article and the Open was swapping Cascade Bluffs for a 3rd Island. Still has the Snow Covered Island in both builds for the "Gifts for lands" edge. He got 12th with this tho:
I did finally pick up my 3rd Spree last week tho and snagged a set of old school Peek's yesterday. May be running it tomorrow night at FNM, we will see.
I think if you just love infect and can't give it up, you should just suck it up and trade for / buy FoW and Trops so you can play it in legacy ... where you also get to play probe and daze and brainstorm and ponder and berserk and invigorate, etc... It's beautiful.
And honestly if you get the 4 Force and 2 Flusters, just start playing w/Breeding Pools. That was my recent plan before I had more bills to pay and I only had $200 to drop on Magic instead of $400. Delayed that plan for later and worked on a different Modern deck instead heh. Legacy Infect is pretty awesome tho. You can always add the Trops along the way and you should be killing them before your life total matters too much.
If Shrine is to be tested maximally, should we have some free spells in the deck? Things like Gut Shot make more sense if that 2 life is adding a counter to your win con. It's the reach for those last couple of points of damage you need to deal when your opponent just stabilized and you keep topdecking lands.
Searing Blood not killing Leovold is probably relevant in a wide meta. You don't want to let them Ancestral off your burn spells. Not sure that Blaze does much better though as they draw two cards off it.
My logic there is that they are probably using using Leovold to block and kill something. Getting rid of Leovold is the goal and I'm generally willing to make that trade. Lava Spike is what comes out when sideboarding tho, and every other burn spell that isn't Flame Rift or Price can target creatures, so usually having something to point at Leovold is a non-issue.
Yeah, especially after the EMA set was released, Legacy Burn is cheaper to buy into than Modern. Friend of mine just finished Modern Burn recently, so I told him drop the $40 for the playsets of cards the deck uses that aren't in Modern and he will have a solid Legacy deck to run.
Your 60 is the exact same as my list and it's been feeling great lately. I had Firecraft in the board, but the general consensus is that it isn't worth having post-Miracles. If you replace them with anything, I would say pick any 3 cards from this list: Pyrostatic Pillar, Grafdigger's Cage, Searing Blood. Mindbreak is solid against Storm, but I don't own any. Pillar is great against Storm if you get a T2 and honestly it's good against most of the format. Blood kills everything that isn't a Reanimator target. Currently I swap Lava Spike out all the time since its the least flexible spell. Full playsets of Searing Blood and Smash to Smithereens make matches like Death & Taxes completely different. Play with the sideboard and see what you think of it, you'll get plenty of feedback here if you have questions.
Here is the list I have landed on for local Legacy events. I think we had about 12 people last night. $5 a head, paid down to 4th. I got $10 in 4th b/c I lost to a friend making a 20/20 Marit Lage token on my T2 endstep 2 games in a row. Last week I mulled to 5 in match 1, game 1 and never saw a mountain before U?R Delver killed me. Lost game 3 to lose that round. Won all my other 3 rounds each night. Went 3-0-1 the week before that. Not really scared of any deck down there, altho Turbo Depths having the nut 2 games straight was tilting as hell.
Check Pile and Maverick were actually son and father respectively. I love doing things like siding in a set of Searing Blood, watching my opponent tap 4 for Gaddock Teeg and then killing it on end step, so I can burn and Fireblast next turn. He must not have been thinking about Price bc I watched him tap 4 to cast something, tapping his ghost quarter and I went ahead and Priced for 6 since he couldn't save himself at that point. PoP is so good in the format right now.
I won game 1 vs MRSA completely on the back of Sulfuric Vortex. Game 1 and 2 he had Chalice on 1 and 2. I won game 1 from Vortex damage and Rift Bolt. We were both at 5 and he ultimated Chandra for her emblem and started to cast SSG. I pointed out that puts him at 3 and he realized I would just kill him in response. So I let him not kill himself, let him drop to 3 from Vortex and when he tried to cast something else I Fireblasted him. Game 3 he just got flustered and screwed up some Chalice triggers, but this was the only game I had Swiftspear down first so all the cast triggers still helped kill him anyway.
Not enough people to win much money at the local Legacy events, but $20 and $10 in store credit is ok. If we had enough to pay down below T2 last week I would have cashed there too. Saving up for other things. Slow and steady. Funny thing is, the kid playing Czech Pile got 1st last night. My breakers sucked from the R1 loss, but I guess everyone ended up at x-1 or worse after the 4 rounds. Turbo Depths must have run into trouble after me bc he wasn't even there by the time we were starting R4. I'm sure his drop didn't help me out any either.
So I took the list I had posted a few above (the 20 mountain version) to a small Legacy event tonite. 9 people, bc the first round bye won out, we still had 2 undefeated in round 4. I beat Eldrazi 2-1, then Eldrazi 2-0, then I stole a round vs Sneak & Show 2-0. It was a $5 tourney and cash split between top 2, so we decided to split and play the round for the extra $5. He was on Mono Red Sneak Attack and beat me 2-0. So I won $20 and was pretty happy with things.
SB plans:
Every round side out Lava Spike since it's my least flexible 1cc spell.
vs Eldrazi and Mono Red Sneak Attack sided in 2 Smash and 2 Bridge.
vs Sneak & Show sided in 2 Bridge and 2 Pyrostatic Pillar.
Only reason to really consider keeping in Firecraft is that it's great to kill off Batterskull. Of course, it's only D&T and *Blade decks that runs that card, so probably fine to let them go. The question is what to replace it with? Harsh Mentor, Pyroblast, Tormod's Crypt, Ashen Rider, Volcanic Fallout, Searing Blaze are the things I am considering for the Firecraft replacement.
Trying to remember what else was there tonite. I remember Food Chain. I'll be honest, it was a small local event, I didn't really care about scouting everything out. I know some of the folks there have decks to switch between. For example, I know Food Chain was playing Sultai Control a few months ago. I know a guy who runs Omni Tell when he shows. We have a resident Pox master (and he has the expensive cards from Legends that I lack) who shows up sometimes too.
Thoughts?
PS Also, already bringing in 4 Blood and 1 Sudden Shock vs D&T. Sulfur Elemental kills 14 creatures in their deck. Worth keeping in the SB for this matchup or replace w/a couple other cards?
Lots of decks run Leyline of Sanctity in their 75. That card alone is plenty of reason to run D Rev instead of just Spree and Smash. I sometimes run 1 Spree and 1 Smash on top of my D Rev compliment
So is Exquisite Firecraft not worth bringing in vs Shadow assuming they are making us discard it and we won't find it topdecking? Getting those last points past Stubborn Denial seems solid.
I ran Vortex in the main in Louisville and it did great work. Currently I don't have Lavamancers in the list, but I'm still considering them. Here is the list as I have it right now:
I have a friend desperate to play the Team Open in Atlanta next weekend, so apparently I only have to pay for my food and share of the gas, so I'm going to be in the Legacy seat w/Burn. I played Burn at GP Louisville in January and I still love the straightforwardness of the PSulli list from the first team event in Baltimore. Here is the list he was using for reference:
I know Firecraft was mostly for Miracles, but with Miracles gone, there are even more U/x decks now and not getting countered is still really strong.
The questions for me are:
1) 20 mountains or run fetches? Obviously, fetches make Blaze and Lavamancer good, but the deck works quite well w/o either a large percentage of the time. I have 11 red fetches if that is the route. Not against the fetches/Plateau/Palm in the board plan either as I can borrow a Plateau or 2 if needed.
2) The Flame Rift slot. Casting Flame Rift is really great and another spell in the deck that can take them down by 4 is always a good thing. I can also see a couple copies of Sulfuric Vortex making it into the main in place of a couple of them. Obviously, if I run fetches, having some number of Blaze main makes sense, altho those are just dead against a deck like Storm.
3) Pyrostatic Pillar seems solid in the board w/an increase in combo. Sulfur Elemental I ran as a 1 of in Louisville, but could see as a 2 if more folks are running D&T post-Vegas. 1 Chaos Warp as an answer to an indestructible 20/20 or just run Bridge (I own 2) ? Is some number of Faerie Macabre worthwhile w/the increase in B/R Reanimator?
I've been posting in the FB group w/the changes I have been making to the deck. I will first list the most recent version, then show the version that I played locally and got 6th out of 29 a couple fridays ago, 2nd going into final round.
Here is the latest build and it's basically Esper Super Friends at this point. This version is currently built at home and I was going to play Friday, but my 3 yr old son freaked on me, got super clingy and wouldn't let me leave the house. I had so many games w/the first version of the deck where I had 2-4 walkers ticking away, but I couldn't close games. The 4th Souls, an Elspeth KE and 2 Ajani Steadfast will help that. Don't own any Gideon, Ally or Trials yet, but Gideon, Ally will likely start making an appearance soon.
This is the version I used to get 6th locally. I beat U/R Delver, Grixis Death Shadow, Tezz Thopter/Sword. I tied w/Eldrazi and Taxes (after an epic 38 minute game 1), then lost in the finals to a R/W Control deck. Game 1 Blood Mooning me when I hadn't gotten a basic or a fetch put me down a game, but he didn't win game 3 until T2 of Turns.
I had been playing the deck late last year/early this year shortly after Neo started popularizing the approach. I've been one of 2 people on the FB forum to spark interest in the deck again. The numbers on some cards in the deck look weird, but with as much card draw as it has going on, the deck has been very consistent for me.
