Thanks for your reply! Shalai was, other than by the Bodyguard's ability, unaltered (so, a 3/4). After the Bodyguard's and the Trickster's abilities had both resolved Shalai's textbox did still read 'indestructible', but was otherwise empty.

I'll look into reporting it. Thank you for your help!

Edit - I've just realized that you can replay games (sorry, I'm a bit new to MTGO), so I've been able to retrieve screenshots of the moment it happened. The first one shows that the Dauntless Bodyguard's ability has resolved before I cast the Merfolk Trickster. The second one shows the Shalai, Voice of Plenty after everything has resolved with 4 toughness, 5 damage and 'Indestructible'.

Hey all, I just came across a situation in a MTGO-game that surprised me a bit. It's possible that I've just missed something obvious, but currently I don't understand what happened, so hopefully someone can clarify the following:

My opponent has a Shalai, Voice of Plenty and a Dauntless Bodyguard (naming Shalai) on the battlefield. I cast a Fight with Fire, targeting the Shalai. They respond by sacrificing the Bodyguard. I let the activated ability resolve. Then, with the Fight with Fire still on the stack, I cast a Merfolk Trickster. Its ETB trigger targets Shalai. I let the Fight with Fire resolve, but the Shalai doesn't die.

What I could find here, was that with M14 the following change was put in effect:

Previously, if a permanent was made indestructible by a resolving spell or ability (such as Withstand Death), and then that permanent lost its abilities, it would still be indestructible. This was because indestructible wasn’t an ability; it was just something true about the permanent. Now, the permanent will gain the ability indestructible, and it will lose this ability along with its other abilities.

I've added a screenshot of the game that I made a few minutes after the incident, but in the log the interaction is still visible (although not very detailed).

    Thanks!

I´ve almost bever had any trouble returning three lands with loam in non-fetch lists and the deck thinning is insanely marginal. As far as I'm concerned the reason you play fetches and duals over the rainbownlands is to preserve your lifetotal.

@Travinski, I think the one card that is really lacking from your list is Insolent Neonate. I feel like most would agree that at this point the core of the archetype is:

    4 Faithless Looting
    4 Insolent Neonate
    4 Narcomoeba
    4 Bloodghast
    4 Prized Amalgam
    4 Stinkweed Imp
    4 Golgari Grave Troll

That still leaves plenty of room for further development, but I do feel like these 28, alongside 16-20 lands, are mandatory.

I am definitely interested in testing results! The more the better.

Edit - @daviusminimus, I'm not sure that I agree with your reasoning for Voice over Wager. If you already have 2 lands in play, discarding lands can't be that big of a deal. I feel like with a T1 Neonate/Looting/Scour and a T2 Wager you should be able to find a Loam that you can dredge on the next drawstep.

After some more testing with Rites I may have come around a little bit, but I do feel like you need 18-19 lands to make it work. The biggest advantage of Rally, in my opinion, is that you can get away with playing 15-16 lands and running more 1-cmc enablers (inquiry, scour) making the deck a fair bit more explosive.

Oh, and I agree with Lectris and Xlapus on Steed VS Skaab. The difference between 1U and 2B is pretty huge in a deck so light on manasources and so set on being as explosive as possible.

    @OttomanOttoman,

I'm mostly on your side with regards to the Rites package. I definitely have encountered situations where Behemoth did the job Rally would not have been capable of (simply too many blockers for Rally usually), but on the whole I'm liking Rally a bit more. It just feels much cleaner. It's significantly cheaper, it requires far fewer slots and in many scenarios it ends the game just as well as Behemoth does. But I know some people in this thread do swear by Rites, so I'll leave it to them to defend it.

It is fun to attack people for 220 though...

I have also been very impressed with Conflagrate. Although I do feel the deck needs to be transformed a bit for it, like Li Shi Tian has done with his build (full set of Loams, Tormenting Voice instead of enablers like Burning Inquiry or Dangerous Wager that empty your hand much faster), so it is also a reasonably big comitment to go for the Conflagrate plan. I have to admit, though, that I haven't played with Conflegrate a ton in lists that are not geered towards abusing it. But so far it seemed quite weak there.

I'm also really happy with Skaab and like playing 2 in my lists. Having an instant speed Amalgam triggerer that you have a lot of control over and also is great as a discard outlet just has so many applications. For me this is enough of a reason to prefer a rainbowland manabase over one with fetch- and shocklands. I just really want red for the 8 mandatory 1-cmc enablers, green for Loam, black for Darkblast and blue for Skaab. In Tian's list I do really miss the Skaabs. After a Surgical Extraction on Bloodghast or a few Path to Exiles I often feel a bit threat light without them.

With regards to landcount: As far as I know, most people either play 15-16 lands with ca. 14-15 1-cmc enablers (like iostream's list) or 18-20 lands with fewer enablers overall but more utility such as Conflegrate or Rites as well as some 2-cmc enablers.

Thanks for the interesting list, Chilli_Axe. What is your reasoning behind the Copperline Gorge and Mountain? I understand a basic is usefull against Path to Exile and Ghost Quarter, but don't you feel that in a deck so light on lands, every non-Dakmor Salvage one should be able to cast any spell in your deck? You yourself mentioned how the deck can operate on one land, but you do have 8 relevant cards that you cannot cast (or activate in the case of Stitchwing Skaab) if that one land is a Copperline Gorge and then the Mountain doesn't even cast Life from the Loam.

Concerning Lee Shi Tian's article, can anyone enlighten me on this quote of his:

"Provided that you have a Dredge cards in hand, which is the better turn 1 play [Insolent Neonate or Faithless Looting, ed]? Most of the time it is correct to cast Faithless Looting. This is mainly because of the chance of bricking if your first Dredge with Insolent Neonate, which results in you not finding another Dredge card. Not only will you be wasting your draw step in turn 2, you will also draw one less card from Faithless Looting."

Why would you draw one fewer card from Looting this way? Personally I feel like starting with Neonate is usually better in a hand with Neonate, Looting, Dredger and at least one land, since it allows you to dredge immediately and at least puts you in a position to never draw a card for the rest of the game. But perhaps I'm overlooking something.

    Hey everyone,

I want to resleeve my paupercube and I've been looking into the different brands. So far the KMC Hyper Mats seem to be regarded quite highly by the community. My only slight worry is that they are often recommended to use as the outer sleeves for double sleeving. However, I'm not planning on double sleeving, so I'm slightly concerned that the sleeves migth be a bit too large for the cards to fit in neatly. Can anyone with experience in this regard give me some advice?

    Thanks,

    That makes sense, thanks.
On a similar note: what happens if I redirect a Lightning Bolt to a Jace, the Mind Sculptor with four loyalty counters on it, while Dack Fayden´s emblem is in the command zone? I assume that doesnt count as targeting the planeswalker?

Hey guys, I have a question about the emblem produced by Dack Fayden's ultimate. If I cast a Lightning Bolt on my opponent's Grizzly Bears with the aforementioned emblem in my commandzone, the stack becomes [top]Emblemtrigger-Bolt[bottom] (correct?). So, does this mean that, after gaining control of the Grizzly Bears, it's considered a different card because it has changed zones (maybe the battlefield is just one zone? in which case this is a false assumption) and is therefore no longer targeted by Lightning Bolt or does Lightning Bolt resolve regardless and kill the bear that has only just come under my control?

    Thanks, mrsqrrl

  • posted a message on [[Pauper]] Synergistic commons
    Hey all,
about six months ago I started working on a pauper cube and so far me and my friends have been having fun with it. However, by now I do feel like it's mostly a pile of magic's common allstars rather than a cube with a real idea behind it. I realized that what it probably needs is more synergy over raw power and I was wondering if any of you had suggestions for 'build-around' commons or commons that otherwise derive most of their power from context (that is to say: the synergistic possibilities). Maybe there's even a thread on the subject already that I overlooked?

I can post a list of my cube on request, if that helps.

    Thanks in advance,
    Leander

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm going to have a look at how exactly I'm going to approach this project.
I was wondering, flatterguy, how would you guys compose packs for drafting? Just, as normal with cube, fifteen random cards, or would you manually construct packs with a set number of rares/uncommons/commons?

    Hey everyone,

I have been trying to come up with a way to enjoy my favorite expansion set's limited environment without having to buy boosterpacks all the time and was intrigued by the idea of building a cube with one copy of every unique card from a specific set (probably proxying the more expensive cards).
Obvious problems you would face would be the ratio of rares/uncommons/commons, which would't be 1/3/10 as in normal boosterpacks but more like 2/2/3.

So, I was wondering if you guys had any thoughts on this idea. Would the low number of commons disrupt the balance of the set? Are there other obstacles I have overlooked? Maybe even a completely different way of reaching the named experience? Anyone with experience with this concept or an otherwise relevant background? Help is appreciated Smile
