The End of an Era

Yeah that's what KriggY was telling me, so I didn't counsel new players to build just to beat vial. Anyhow, I know of a geist deck and a krenko deck that I hope I can get out to the tournament, and I think one or two folks from a regular edh playgroup. I expect to see at least 8 people at the tourney, which would just about pay for the force of will. If you know anyone in the area, the new orleans comic-con is that weekend, so if someone is in town for the con, they can just head over to go4games for the tournament at 7pm.

Hm, what decks defeat it easily?

Oh definitely, I meant I would warn them to build keeping in mind that they might have to face vial. Like, if they can't hold off that deck's crazy control burn style then they need to build better. When is the january banlist announcement? It would be nice if it's before our tourney so some of the new players don't have to deal with vial (I'm into the competitive scene, but getting a spell countered by force of will and taking five damage from it is kinda unfun).

Thanks, for the thoughts folks. I think the word has been spread a bit too much to take back the force first prize now. I will definitely post heavily on the few facebook groups I know of, though. And, yeah I think I will send some folks to mtgtop8 and let folks know about vial smasher decks (which took first place in the first tourney).

Hey, I'm an edh player in New Orleans who, along with a few others in the area, has recently become interested in having competitive commander tournaments. There is a large number of edh players in the area, but obviously regular edh is not a format for competitive play. I arranged with my lgs to have a duel commander tournament, expecting to be able to attract the more cutthroat players to a format that is not too dissimilar from their normal play. Turn out was pretty poor, though, partially because of short notice and poor advertising, but also because many edh players were less interested in modding a deck for the format than I had expected.

My lgs (www.go4gamesnola.com) has committed to another $10 entry tournament on January 7th with force of will as first prize bait. Now here is the issue, if turn out is poor a second time with that kind of prize on the line not only will the shop eat a loss, but I doubt I can get them to host another duel commander tournament ever again. I want to avoid that kind of outcome, because it would kill this format which I've become pretty excited about.

I need advice about attracting regular edh players and attracting dc players from outside the area. My expectation is that once people build a deck for the format they will be willing to show up to future tournaments and the format will thrive. So I need to build a bigger player base in the area, but I also need for even people from outside the area to show up for this tournament. I don't have much time before the 7th because of the holidays, but I will try whatever people can suggest to get the word out and also attract the regular edh players.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me! Laissez les bons temps roulez!

This is late notice for folks in the greater gulf region, so I apologize for that, but it's likely the first of an ongoing series of tourneys so I thought I'd better start getting the word out. Go4games in Metairie Louisiana is having a duel commander tournament Saturday December 17th with a $10 entry fee. We wont be registering decklists until the second tournament on January 7th but I will post the top 8 commanders anyhow.

A friend was commenting that he didn't get why partner was exciting to people. I thought about it a bit, and it seems worth mentioning that it is as though, rather than just printing 15 commanders with partner, Wotc printed an additional 105 commanders. Now, some of those 105 combinations are lacking heavily in synergy, but still, 120 new commanders all together in one product is pretty freaking wild.

*edit* It may also be worth mentioning that playing Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis is likely to be how I come out to my edh playgroup. There's also probably a 25% chance it's how I end up not playing with them any longer. I am not looking forward to the "jokes" I can expect to hear.

it is a pretty complex and interactive card, but, honestly, would it be undercosted at even 4 mana? Just for the sake of argument, would it be undercosted at one black? like, what could really be abused with this effect?

What are the spoiled energy cards that represent a real payoff? So far I haven't noticed anything that looks like it works out of an all in energy deck.

An inversion of the old abilities?
Still not clear if the fused creatures will have normal card format, be double face, or have some new format (creature spells with Fuse would be cool, but doubtful).
If it's just a mashup of two creatures in one, i guess gisela might bring something like the ability on Goldnight Castigator, and bruna might bring...
Dang, just saw the art; that is seriously f-ed up looking. Any abilities the angels had probably have no bearing on this thing.

Over at http://hanweirchronicle.com/ it looks like everyone is having twins, and there was some letter about "coming together". Could be relevant to the weird use of the plural here, like people are fusing or something? Though, that doesn't really fit with established eldrazi effects.
