I've been told by a few to go mono G since it's the better option for cheaper play. I just really hate getting blocked (and I understand the deck has things like rancor and apostle's blessing to deal with blockers) which is why I like blighted agent so much, so would simic be just as reliable?
Granted this still has some spendy cards (inkmoth nexus and pain lands, and spellskites), but that's more manageable compared to the fetches and hierarchs (and thoughtseize to replace duress while I'm puking up over $600 for 8 lands)
How viable would something like this be in modern, and infect in general?
I have yet to try a standard tournament, but I feel like it would be more fun compared to modern/legacy as far as constructed goes. I'm currently trying a standard izzet deck against my girlfriend's modern decks (she's a big fan of angels from avacyn as well), which feels like a huge handicap for me due to all of her cheap white removal (which is also strong in standard with Chain to the Rocks. Is there a good way for RU to answer to enchantments in standard? Right now I can only think of counters like Syncopate, Izzet Charm, Negate, etc.
On another note, what personally got me interested in magic were the infect creatures in new phyrexia/scars/mirrodin besieged. The artwork and flavor around all things phyrexian is just so cool.
Yeah I've heard good things about boros and monoblack for standard. Journey to nowhere for W sounds really good. What's a good way for r/u to respond to enchantments? Since right now all I have are syncopates and negates, which feel clunky. I really do like izzet charm however, what with all that versatility.
I've played casual magic on and off since I started buying mtg cards when scars was released, and I've been wanting to get into standard. Looks fun, and I don't want to face broken modern/legacy decks. Plus, the card pool to draw from is much easier for me to wrap my head around rather than EVERYTHING legal in modern and/or legacy. I'd also like to try booster drafts or sealed someday, maybe before standard. I foolishly bought red/blue shock lands and I decided I might as well put them to some use, so here is what I was able to come up with:
I mostly just wanted to know how something like this would hold up in a local FNM standard event, what kinds of decks I would be facing, etc. I'm expecting to be completely destroyed in my first match, but I just want to get a feel for what tournaments on a local level feel like. Any tips are welcome as well as criticism on the deck
Well, I wanted to post a link to a good thread on how to format decklists, but apparently I can't post links until I have made 5 posts!
Either way I'm new to the forums myself and have been buying magic cards since scars, but never did much with them until recently. I'm trying to get into standard, but EDH looks hella fun from what I've heard.
Hello all,
I've been interested in mtg since the release of scars, but would usually just buy booster packs and kinda mess around with my girlfriend attempting magic games and we both had no idea what we were doing. We've slowly learned how the game works over time, however we never did anything beyond really casual stuff. Recently some of her coworkers decided to start doing weekly casual games at a local card store, and we have started joining. I noticed they all like to play standard-legal decks, and my girlfriend and I only had some modern decks (which, after many games, starts to seem unfair for them).
TL;DR I've been tempted to get on the standard bandwagon and try my hand at making a deck and trying local standard tournaments. I expect to be utterly destroyed, but I mostly want to experience what competitive mtg on a local level is like, meet new people, learn some tips and tricks, etc. On a whim I picked red/blue and made the following:
I realize that investing in shock lands when I don't even know if I can go the competitive route yet was foolish, but hey, I like them. I mostly just want opinions on how a deck like this might hold up at a local FNM standard event, and what types of decks I would most likely be seeing (I've been told boros decks and monoblack decks are doing well right now). Of course any good criticism on the deck is welcome as well.
I do not, however, like shelling out for 8 fetches and 4 noble hierarchs.
How viable would this slight variation be in modern?

4 Llanowar Wastes
4 Yavimaya Coast
