Im actually playing a W/G mana build right now that seems pretty good based on limited testing so far.... It started as a G/W take on Elves, but turned into a deck with some pretty decent matchups.

Im still working on the SB, but I'm pretty happy with my MD choices...BoPs will become Noble Hierarchas soon as I can get them. Anyone with any input about SB strategies, id love to hear some input. The only card Im not completely happy with is the Warhammer, so those may get the axe, and I also may try to find room for PtE if I can squeeze em in somehow. The Warhammers will most likely come out for the 3rd 'Thresher and 3rd Colossus.

Ill be taking this deck to a Standard tournament tomorrow at my local shop... The meta is lots of BoatBrew, Swans, RDW and lots of other decks, so Ill have to do some thinking to tweak the SB correctly.
So far I'm thinking something along the lines of:

Thats just off the top of my head... maybe PtE's instead of Purges, but this isnt set in stone... Primal Command prob doenst make much sense when I want Teeg to stick on the board to shut off Cryptic Command, ***, Ajani, Elspeth, Sarkhan, Cruel Ultimatum, Banefire and lots of other things.

I will actually try very hard to be there...

My local store in Brick, NJ stopped holding ANY constructed tournys what-so-ever so I have kind of fallen off the whole T2 bandwagon, but Im definitely gonna have to get back into it to attend this event...

Now if only my local store would start alternating between Standard and Draft at FNM instead of Drafting week after week after week, I would be set.

Anyone in Ocean/Monmouth counties looking to get some playtesting done, or knows where else some good sized constructed tournys are held please send me a PM...

i know that in big tournaments mana weave could get you in trouble, but you can do it in fnm if you shuffel afterwards

I don't think thats true. Mana stacking or weaving or whatever you wanna call it, is definitely illegal in just about any tournament setting, even if you shuffle afterwards. At most FNMs Im sure you could get away with it since no-one is checking decks to ensure randomness and proper shuffling, but its still something that you should avoid getting in the habit of.

In terms of tips, I would say one of the biggest tips I can give is to take notes. Write down what your opponent plays. Everything he plays. If you get a chance to see his hand or look through his library during the game for some reason jot down notes about what you see (dont sit there copying down the full titles of every card but take clear notes ot yourself). This really comes in handy more than you would think, especially if you write down your own SBing strategies. After FNMs you can go back and re-read your notes and have a better understanding of what happened when, and how you can fix things etc...

I also agree with what other people have said an Ill add a few more of my own...
-Be confident, being nervous will likely cause you to make more play mistakes.
-Be familiar with ALL the cards in your deck (this may seem dumb, but you may be surprised).
-Count your deck, and make sure you DE-SIDEBOARD after every match.
-Bring a pen, paper, die and counters.
    -HAVE FUN!!! Smileup

Yeah Im dissapointed... I came home from college and was hoping to get a few drafts in tonite since I have a whole heap of packs sitting on my account...

I even skipped my FNM because I was planning on drafting all night on MTGO:mad:...why did they choose the weekend I come home to take v2 down?

I guess we can all just hope that v3 goes live next week like they say, but with all the delays in everything we do, Im not going to be surprised when the server remains offline for 3 weeks. I hope this is all really worth it.

Augery Adept seems absolutely fantastic. While there arent many U/W decks running around nowadays, should one pop up on the radar this guy seems an Auto Include. Life-gain and an extra card a turn seem great on a 2/2 for 1:symuw::symuw: Like a W/U mana Dark Confidant. They are really pushing card draw with W/U mana in this set... I like it Thumbs Up

Sheild of the Oversoul isnt as exciting, but is taking the hybrid concept to a new level for sure. The card could end up being a high pick in limited, and even a house if BGW Elves are strong in Block or Standard... Either way the ability to make green critters indestructible seems too good to not play in Limited (the +1/+1 and flying to a lesser extent).

I'm sure I'm not the only one waiting for midnight so I can see Monday's preview card. So my question is, how do you pass the time when you wait for previews, etc.? Discuss.

Personally, Im usually doing any of the following:

    Playing guitar
    Drafting LLM on MTGO
    Testing Block on MTGO
Watching DVDs (lots of Arrested Development lately)
Browse trade threads in the Trading Post

I recommend any of them wholeheartedly

I actually think it is better as one forum.

That way people, like me, can have one thread for sales and buys... Like Saph said, the search function is easy enough to find only the sales threads.

While threads of this nature are inevitable for EVERY new set release, and several have already popped up about this Rumor season, I think that it has been a bit of a slow Rumor Season.

Since none of us are waiting for the Rumor Mill days of yore, with the giant lists of leaked cards from R_E, I dont think its wrong to say this Rumor Season has been a bit dry. There havent been any magazine previews, when by now we usually have had at least 1 foreign magazine with a few tidbits in it, and really no real amounts of credible information other than what Wizards gives us and the great work the 'Millers do with the Orb...

However I dont think it is anything to really be worried about. I think WotC has realized that the spoilers and rumors ARE good for the set and generate lots of hype, they want to be the ones in charge of when and how that information is revealed. I think the "Preview" Booster pack we got to see was a glimpse of Previews and Rumors to come... Dissappearing are the days of Magazine previews, forget truly leaked cards, WotC seems to be the one in charge of our "rumors" now.

Now with all that said, heres to another fantastic Rumor Season here at MTGS, and Im sure that we will get some spoiled cards soon enough, as people get product early or more information gets leaked on schedule from MTG.com

It seems boring and overly dramatized to unappealing ends.

I just can't seem to get into it, and every time I see the previews on TV I think, seriously how hard did the kid making 100%'s on MIT tests (which is not a fluff school mind you) try to get money for an Ivy League Eduction before deciding it was hopeless and then turned to blackjack.

Maybe it's just me and my pissy attitude of late, but that just seems like really boring movie premise.

Im pretty positive that the whole "He needs tuition" premise was made up to make the whole story more dramatic. In reality, the MIT Blackjack team, and the character in the movie who needs tuition, were actually mostly in it for the thrill and the challenge...and making enough cash to retire in their mid 20's...
I dont think any of them were in it for tuition.

Also hearing that Spacey's character carried the movie, isnt surprising... In real life, "Mr M." was the man in charge of the whole MIT operation, gettting investors, creating the actual company, and recruiting and training all the new members... Im jsut hoping they keep the part where he leaves a bag with 100s of thousands of dollars underneath a desk in a classroom:o in the movie.

Seems like it could be a fairly entertaining movie, but from the previews I can already tell that they have added way too much for dramatic effect. I mean Jim Sturgess' character should be Russian... Guess they had to make the movie more accessabile and relatable to everyone.

Doubt Ill be running to see it, probably wait till its out on DVD and rent it...

Do you really think you need Garruk AND Overrun?

Seems that one or the other would be enough. Once Garruk hits the table, dont the Overruns become a bit of a win-more at best.

That said the G/b Warriors deck seems to do a good job exploiting Overrun's potential...though many are happier with the red splash... Check out THIS thread for some deck lists/ideas

you guys "have" to pay to participate in FNM? weird..
we only pay for draft and non-sanctioned tourneys (if there are less players than the minimum)

I dont think I have EVER been to a store or even heard of one that doesn't charge for FNM. Both stores I currently play at have $10 entry to Drafts and $5 entry to Constructed FNMs. I think that the fact you have FNMs (only constructed?) for free is actually weird as it seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

Do you receive prize packs without entry fees, or only the Promo Cards?

    Quote from carrion pigeons
My store's FNM is never anything but draft, and there is never a cut to Top anything no matter how many people there are. There is also zero prize support, but on the plus side, you get to draft for only 8 bucks.

Wow, for $8 drafts I would be severly angry about not getting ANY prize support... For $10 drafts my store gives 1 pack for every Round you win plus larger prizes to the Finalists... I would think that for $8 entry they could certainly afford to give up some prize packs.

    Quote from Vince »
Unfortunately our Judge/organiser forgets to submit results so we miss out on FNM foils - I'm owed a few as are many.

Why would him not reporting your results fail to get you the Promos? FNM promos are usually sent to the store weeks in advance...Maybe if you mean he doesnt keep track of the results during the tourney, but then how are pairings determined and how do you figure out placement? Anyway, not reporting the results of the tournament to the DCI afterwards would prevent you from getting your MPR points, but it sounds like perhaps the FNM isnt actually sanctioned or he is holding back the Promos...

It seems very strange to me that so many FNMs seem to be run so differently. I guess it is really the discretion of the store owner as to how the FNM will be run and what kind of prizes will be given out, and the more I read, the happier I become with how mine are structured... Some seem to be run a little bit too shady for my taste:sneaky:

So, is it safe to trade here? All these bannings have made me worried.

I would say its very safe to trade here, and if anything I would say all of the tradebannings only prove that MTGS' trading community is well protected. The Mods do everything they can to get the bad traders outta here.
I have traded with 79 seperate individuals on here and have only had minor issues with some traders (A few agreed to trades and send first, but never sent) and even then only about 3 times. So out of 100 or so trades Ive only had 3 where there was even an issue, and in those I was never actually ripped. Id say those are good odds.

The trading community here at MTGS is very supportive and the Trade Forum Mods are all top notch in terms of helping resolve issues or banning those who refuse to do so.

For a new trader I would say your best bet is to do trades with people who have well established iTrader ratings. That way you will know that person is in good standing. If you ever have to make trades where you send first to someone you are unsure about, remember the 3rd Party Trading system...Myself and several others are willing to accept the packages from both sides of the trade to help prevent anyone from ripping.

Just be smart, check references, and always feel free to ask questions about the trader to people who have aready traded with them. Like Fatguy_Poolshark said, 98% of the trades that take place here go smoothly and leave both sides of the trade happy.

  • posted a message on FNM: How is yours ran?
Im a bit shocked at the way so many FNMs are being run, at least judging by the posts and Poll results...

I play at 2 stores mainly... 1 usually averages 15-20 players and is 4 rounds followed by a cut to the Top 4. Prize structure is related to attendance. For each player entered, 1 pack goes towards prizes, which are split between 1st and 2nd (if 15 people show up 1st gets 10, 2nd gets 5). FNM cards go to 1st and 2nd and are also distributed, with 1 pack, to 2 random players who didnt drop and where not in Top 4.

The other store I play at is much smaller, usually only gets 8-10 players but still runs 4 rounds and cuts to Top 4. The prize structure is strange. For the 4 Swiss rounds, you win a pack for each round you win. Making it to the Top 4 gets you 2 packs, and then 1st and 2nd play for 4 packs. So going 6-0 gets you 10 packs. As usual 1st and 2nd get FNM promos.

Maybe I just get lucky with my local stores, but I certainly would be angry to play in an FNM that only runs Swiss...

Woah, some of these colleges seem outrageously expensive... Here, Tuition is around 6-8k a year plus room and board...

Thats about the same here in NJ to be honest. A 4 year State Colege is about 8-9k a year. 4 courses + room and board... While that might seem exorbitant to some (and trust me, everytime I write the check it seems that way to me too), but compared to Private Colleges or Universities Im getting a relatively cheap eucation by US standards.

And $4000 a year in Australia!?!?!?!?!?! Wow...I guess Im getting the shaft here in the States...

And Now the deck I came up with...

I decided to go G/B taking advantage of the removal in Black and the nasty Combo of Elves/Warriors I have going. Black looked strong in Faeries and had a lot of Changelings to pump up my warrior count.

    Warriors(including Changelings): 8
    Elves(including Chagelings): 11

So playing black and including the Faeries was purely a call on my part because I really like Dreamspoilers and Final-Sting to a lesser extent, and Cairn Wanderer has proved its usefulness to me in limited over and over again. I suppose iI could have gone for a solid G/R Warrior build, but I didnt like the curve it gave me, although Hearthcage is a beast...But i Opted for my solid Black fliers and changelings plus the Lash out and Tarfire seemed good enough reason to splash Red But my Elves and Warriors were just silly....Perfect and Paragon!?!?! AND Battle-Axe...AND Colossus?!?!?! whew;)

Well Im definitely open to anyones comments/criticisms/ideas... The league is still going on so any changes you can think of to make, please LMK.
