Blubberburg posted a message on Is Tarkir worse now than it was in Khans of Tarkir? All I can gather is that Sarkhan is a huge douche, he was part of releasing the eldrazi because of his love for dragons got him helping bolas (and sure some other stuff out of his control) and now he goes back in time and ruins everybody's life to bring back his beloved dragons.Posted in: Magic Storyline -

Perkunas687 posted a message on Is Tarkir worse now than it was in Khans of Tarkir? It's been said before in this thread, but I'd like to say that I agree. FRF Tarkir had dragons attacking humans almost constantly. Each clan had their own way of protecting themselves and taking down dragons. Yasova pointed out that she is tired of watching her people get killed off by dragons. I can only imagine that fatigue also existed among the other clans. In my mind, humans aren't killing dragons for sport or for food, but to just survive. Dragons, in my mind, weren't killing humans to preserve their own existence, but killing humans for sport/food. So when the dragon tempests stopped, humans saw an opportunity to finally be able to sleep soundly at night without fear of a dragon dropping from the sky on them. I don't blame them. That kind of life seems pretty terrifying. Dragons eventually became extinct, but you're telling me that dragons couldn't have hidden from humans somewhere, in unreachable mountains, or hidden swamps, or whatever matches up to their color focus? I mean, how does NO dragon survive? Were the humans just roving hunting squads for hundreds of years, pulling up grass and rocks and knocking on caves to find the last dragon? And then how would they even know if they got the last dragon? My gut tells me that to the last dragon, the dragons had to seek conflict with humans to the very end, for dragons to have all been eliminated. Imagine trying to find the last living sample of a species on the planet, without knowing if it's still out there, or if there are more than one. The only way you would know is by crossing paths with it. Dragons aren't stupid, and likely to be able to avoid humans if they didn't want conflict/death.Posted in: Magic Storyline
With that tangent done, I can understand the desire to be rid of dragons. As a bad example, say there's a disease killing off humans. Enough survive to keep the race going, but humans are dropping every day to it. You can create a vaccine. Wouldn't you want to completely eliminate that disease so that no one would ever have to die from that disease again? With that in mind, the dragons wouldn't feel the same way towards humans because, with increased numbers from roiling dragon tempests, they have a distinct advantage. So why kill those who can become your slaves/servants/sycophants/worshipers/etc.? Why not live the good life?
And in regard to why Ugin would engineer (if he did) a constant stalemate between dragons and humans...I had a probably wrong idea. Ugin was still an oldwalker back then. Oldwalkers could transport individuals with them through the Blind Eternities, and Ugin was a powerful one. What if Ugin knew that the constant fighting would strengthen both sides to a sharp edge, just in case he needed his own private army for some reason? Probably wrong, but it is appealing to me. -

Like the Abzan totally-not-necromancy spirits and kin-trees, or the Jeskai monk having room for both scholars and tricksters. Whereas the dragons are more or less "same old" stereotypes dating back all the way to Ravnica -Posted in: New Card Discussion
Ojutai is thought police.
Kolaghan is burn/kill/zap everything.
Silumgar is paranoia and power plays.
Atarka is me hungry! me eat!
Dromoka is all yay lets help everybody.
I find there is very little meaning for having a dragon clan-leader - if you just substituted every dragon for a human, there wouldn't be much difference. There is this disconnect between the dragons and the clans they lead... We could have got "How to Train your Dragon", with Kolaghan Dragon-riders, Dromoka dragon siege engines, Ojutai building dragon machines or enchantments or some colourless magic mumbo-jumbo from Ugin - instead we got generic fantasy world 101.

Sarkhan is the only one who seems to think that this future is entirely better, and he's always been nuts even before going "insane".
It's a net gain for the multiverse because Ugin still lives, but it's something of a tragedy for the non-dragon people of Tarkir. -

Flisch posted a message on Uncharted Realms DiscussionsPosted in: Magic StorylineQuote from orlouge82 »I don't get it. Were people this upset about Avacyn Restored when Avacyn came back and angels took over the plane? They are ruling Innistrad's human population with the same demand for devotion as Ojutai (which comes from his white aspect, not his blue), yet no one was complaining. Is this because angels are more humanlike than dragons? Is it because Avacyn protects the human population? Because Dromoka fills largely the same role for the former Abzan. And both have similar, intolerant views toward "necromancy," not just with the traditional dark magic ritual raising ghouls from the grave, but with the less conventional kind (kin-tree ancestor invocation for Dromoka and Geralf's Frankenstein-esque mad science).
It's a complicated matter with Avacyn, I'll give you that. But the important thing is that Avacyn and her angels do care about humans and actively try to protect them. They are not a means to an end, quite the reverse, Avacyn's purpose is to protect humanity, not the other way around.
We do not even know if Avacyn is aware of her true role, as a "herder" for the vampires to feast on the humans. So we cannot even tell if Avacyn is being dishonest with the humans. It might very well be that she truly believes her purpose is to rid Innistrad of all abominations.
Quote from orlouge82 »It doesn't seem like we ever visit a Magic plane that isn't ruled/ravaged by some all-powerful force (or series of forces, like in Ravnica), yet players continue to get upset whenever it happens on a new plane.
Nobody is upset about the dragons ruling the humanoids. It's a common thing in the multiverse. I mean even Ravnica, one of the arguably most "civilized" planes is a ****hole to live in as a humanoid, compared to what we (people living in the first world) are used to.
However, when someone claims that the humanoids are better off under dragon rule, that's where the crazy starts.
Quote from orlouge82 »At least on Theros, you could just stick to Kruphix, who's really everything you could ever want in a benevolent deity (though Karametra and Ephara probably aren't so bad, either).
I wouldn't be so quick to call Kruphix "benevolent". He's the least petty of the gods by far, but when he expressed his worries about extra-planar threats, it was mostly about Theros as a whole and subsequently his own continued existence.
Though, I agree with you, he seems like the most reasonable of the bunch by a large margin, but to me, benevolent is still a long way to go. -

The Naga don't seem that bad off since Sidisi managed to amass enough wealth and reach such a top position before her execution.

Woah. Not at all comparable. Avacyn is an actual savior of humanity. Without her and her angels, humankind gets eaten by vampires and werewolves. And, y'know, they're not dictators or even rulers; people still govern and all they do is give people the power to fight. Without Dromoka and the dragons, we see the humanoids of Tarkir are doing just fine lol. -

DirkGently posted a message on Game etiquette: Offering to shake after a brutal game?I don't think there's anything wrong shaking or saying "Good game" from either side of the table, but I do think it goes down a little smoother if, as the winner, you say something like "better luck in the next round" and acknowledge that variance was a significant factor. I know I personally feel better when someone says that rather than "good game", especially after a particularly frustrating match, although I'll shake in either case.Posted in: Magic General -

If you've been beat, your opponent deserves the kudos, deserves the glory, deserves to be smug, and deserves to talk to his friends about how he beat you, even in earshot of you.
So, don't lose? or don't be anti-social, one or the other. if I have an opponent who refuses to shake just because they had some bad luck, then they are a persona non-grata to me until they man up and acknowledge their poor behavior.
It's a game, and if you let your performance spill over into your social life, that's on you, and you deserve whatever loss of respect/friends that it comes with.
Winning doesn't entitle you to being a douche. Which is pretty much the behaviour you describe. In fact, the winner should be held to the highest standard of sportsmanship.
Can we summarize this entire discussion as "Don't be a dick, it's a card game, mellow out" -

Bread Connoisseur posted a message on [[Official]] Reserved List Discussionhttp://archive.wizards.com/Magic/tcg/article.aspx?x=magic/products/reprintpolicyPosted in: Magic General
Please tell me where they won't print near functional versions of cards a la reverberate in the policy described on this page. Oh right there isn't one because that would be a barrel full of worms cracked open. See: voiceless spirit and thunder spirit. Differences between the 2 are very small. Roc of kher ridges is another example as a generic 3/3 flier for 3R it's way too easily to near functionally reprint that. I'm sure there's a lot more on the list I can't think of but that clause does not exist. MaRo has said they don't want to violate the spirit of the RL with cards like reverberate but it isn't written in stone. They could easily print a cycle of 10 duals with basic land types that said when this enters the battlefield, gain 1 life or have target opponent lose 1 life. Will they? The chance of that occurring is likely 0.00000000000000000000000000001% but it COULD happen without repercussions in regards to upholding the RL.
People play legacy because they enjoy the format not because of the crowd that plays legacy. That's like saying standard is played due to the crowd of people being enjoyable. Typically there are nice people in every format who are good to talk to and such/good company. I don't play standard, modern, or EDH. I still talk with players of those formats regularly because they are nice people to talk to whether they own underground sea or not.
No matter what we think in regards to the list short of someone from this thread buying hasbro we have zero impact on it. I was there just under 5 years ago when there was tons of chatter about the list. I was there the day the strength of WotC failed. WotC kept the list when they had that one chance to destroy the list forever. There is no strength left in WotC. The line of kings is broken. -

This is the current Manifestation of the deck. Ah, yes. The puns are so good.
4x Hooded Hydra
4x Icefeather Aven
4x Master of Pearls
2x Polukranos, World Eater
2x Thassa, God of the Sea
4x Whisperwood Elemental
Enchantments 14
2x Banishing Light
4x Cloudform
4x Lightform
4x Trail of Mystery
4x Soul Summons
Lands 22
2x Flooded Strand
2x Temple of Enlightenment
2x Temple of Plenty
2x Windswept Heath
4x Yavimaya Coast
3x Forest
3x Island
4x Plains
2x Banishing Light
3x Erase
2x Kheru Spellsnatcher
4x Negate
2x Reality Shift
2x Monastery Siege
Its biggest issues are going to be that it is slow and then, of course, weak against aggro decks. I know there are the 0/X morph creatures that can be used early for blocking, but I think something more substantial is needed, I am just not sure what.
Other than that, we will just have to see how things shape up in standard and whether this idea is viable at all.
What do you guys think?

Remember the combat phase goes:
1) Beginning of Combat Step
2) Declare Attackers Step - Any abilities that say something like "Whenever x attacks" trigger here.
3) Declare Blockers Step - Any abilities that say something like "Whenever x becomes blocked or blocks"
4) Combat Damage Step
5) End of Combat Step
and both players are able to use activated abilities and instants at the end of each of the steps.
1
Option #1) Activate regenerate on the Warden, at any time you could play an instant, before the Combat Damage Step. In the Combat Damage Step, your Warden would be dealt the damage and deal its damage. Since the warden would have taken enough damage to be lethal, the regenerate effect would take place and instead of dying, it would be tapped and removed from combat. No other effects are triggered.
Option #2) Block without activating regenerate. Your Warden would die, triggering the Dictate and Ascendencys, causing each opponent to sacrifice 1 creature and putting 2 1/1 flying white spirit creature tokens onto the battlefield under your control.
As was said above, dying indicates being put into a graveyard. So, if your creature happens to get exiled, the abilities on the enchantments would not be triggered.

WOAAHHH!!! I thought Wizards was trying to bring down the power level! With that it would just be Urza all over again!
